Retired O/O trucker from Illinois, living in Lampang, Thailand now! That valve on the heater core line is how you regulate the temp inside the cab on the Freightliners! It hooks to your slide on the dash, and they are notorious for leaking, and only lasting a couple of years! I went thru many of them on my FLD 120! If you bypass it, regulating the heat will be near impossible, as you will have to jack the cab and close the valve a little, if too hot, etc.! They don't cost much, so i would just replace it! I was glad to see you put cardboard in front of the radiator to protect it, it only takes 1 slipped wrench, or a nick from the fan to make a bad day go really bad! I see so many guys not take the time to protect the radiator, because "they just don't have the time" Good Job!

The engine has 2 thermostats, I would replace the hoses with silicone hose and clamps the rubber grommets for the tube are available at Cummins or Kenworth dealers. The radiator hoses at the bottom does not create a hot spot, as there is a baffle in the bottom of the rad tank, water goes in, goes up to the top then over to the other side than goes down. I’ve worked on many of these engines and still have the manuals for the low flow cooling systems, there are 2 thermostats, if you don’t have any info on the thermostats and housings don’t do it unless you have some info on them there is an update to the housing that should be done. Formula is a low torque engine horsepower rating, most were 300 H P.. the after cooler is like a radiator that has water running through it. The air goes through the core and keeps the air into the engine at lower or higher temp. The coolant filters are not the same, get a filter with dca precharge, then after the next service use a dca maintenance filter. Wish I were there to help, we’d make short work of doing your engine. I’m up from northern Alberta and still work on these engines. Not many people know any thing about the old Cummins engines. I like these old engines, were easy to work on and were very reliable. Good luck my friend.
@NOT_FOR_HIRE

Thank you for all the info and clearing that up for me! I already ordered the thermostats and took the housing off. What is the update I'd like to do it before I put it back together?

@@NOT_FOR_HIRE a book explaining the Optimized Aftercooling and low flow Radiators Bulletin Cummins 3387315 explains the whole system, I still have mine from 1985. Then their Low Restriction Thermostat housing. Cummins service and Parts Topics 87T8-8has the info you would find useful. The old style thermostat cover needed a larger hole drilled in the housing, newer thermostat cover 3042624 takes a stat with no spacer, all others use thermostat with spacer, bottom line make sure you get the same thermostats, exactly the same . The engine runs fairly hot compared to others at this time. Many of these engines and rad combinations were misdiagnosed and the rad was replaced with a normal rad and the front water rail/thermostat housing and water pumps were replaced, basically turning them back to big cam 3 technology thanks for asking, took me a while to find this stuff, at 78 years I’m still repairing the big cam engines, not many people know how to work on these engines, and there’s not much info on the manuals as they’re all electronic manual now and the old manuals were never put on network.. good luck my friend.

The Formula 290-350 Cummins came out in the mid to late '70's. It was a variation or improvement on the previous engines. I think they were High torque, low rev engines and they were marketed as fuel saving engines. Detroit were marketing the Silver 92 engines as the 'Fuel Squeezer' around the same time.

Least that screen wasn't plugged up with silicone so hopefully the radiator is still good. Couple things don't forget the DCA or the liners will pit out quick. It's probably already been done but you need to make sure there's been a vent hole drilled in the bottom of the housing for the front thermostat. Wish I was there to help set the over head and roll in some bearings.

I surely would open the heater box area as you will suffer some awful heat from those heater cores as they just seem to pump heat from there. I do believe it has a vent to the outside up there that will pull the heat out and keep the engine running cooler in some of the places that you travel and the heat of the day is in the nineties. The fan in the front there should come right off with the four or five bolts holding it. When you take it off, you will see that its designed to be reversed for pulling air or pushing air. I liked to push in the winter and pull in the summer and its actually easy after you do it once so those belts become a piece of cake compared to taking half the front out to get to them. I don't remember the name of the goofy pipe fitting that crossed over on top but know it keeps it from air locking itself. Very important job for it to do. I don't have any Mitchell's Manuals for Cummins but if you do find them, they are the gods of information. My memory is so feeble as I'm 73 and been a while since I raised the hood even on the family grocery getter. Best of luck from alaska... a state so big that it should be its own country!!

Im not a driver i just worked at Petro truckstop at the tire and lube bay so I’ve greased a-lot of them. Lol. There grease fitting all over that truck. You gotta find them. Let me think its been a while since i worked there back in 1995. Fittings on the radiator fan the one you found and if im not mistaken theres one on the front of the fan itself you cant see.. you have to stick your hand in front of the fan and feel for it. the steering wheel shaft column has some ,one on each side of your hood at the bottom of the hinges, both sides of your fith wheel… and thats all i can remember plus the ones on your u- joints on the drive shaft

I started watching your cabover videos from the start you have your work cut out for you !!! I bought a 1994 day cab Freightliner a couple years ago . It was an old FedEx truck and in far better shape as far as the rust you have been running into !! Having said that I have gone through most everything like you are doing and yes it gets pricey !!! Mine was a tractor when I bought it and now it has a rugged flat bed on it and is set up with Pintle hook hitch and air for a 20 ton Interstate equipment trailer which I use for Dozer, Backhoe and paving equipment. I have used the truck daily for the last two years with very little trouble but I only use it pretty much local. I would like to share a picture of it but not on Facebook or instagram but could do email if I knew yours. Keep up the good videos and NICE truck !!!

If you're not going to use the A/C then you don't need that plastic shut off valve to the heater core. It automatically closes the valve when the compressor clutch is switched on. If you get a chance to- The fins of the cooling fan need cleaned and waxed, if possible. Filthy like that will barely move any air. The wax (Nu Finish, silicone spray, etc.) will help keep them clean & slippery. It's nice you're changing & replacing all old and questionable consumables; so many people try false economy, and get burned later, then discouraged and angry at the old part and not themselves for being cheap.

The low flow cooling is junk at best, in my opinion. If you find a Cummins parts guy who has been around long enough to remember these engines it's a huge help. Good luck with the projecf

you have one of the first series Cummins BC IV low flow cooling. If you take the T States out look for a small hole 1/8 drilled down into the housing, the top housing should have been updated as well. Check the water filter check valves as well. Low Flow cooling was good if the system was maintained. Formula Cummins were the Fleet 1900 RPM governed engines. Kyser Cadillac built coolant systems. Your Alt pulley looks really corroded. The coolant filter number changes per the amount of DCA charge within the filter.

Man I really enjoy watching you work on Jolly Green man. I used to drive a truck like that except mines had bunk beds in it. Looking back at it I really do miss that truck. It ran so good and had the power too. I can't wait to see you get your truck on the road man. What I really find awesome is how you work on your truck in crocs. I do the same thing to man. I'm either barefooted 👣, in flip-flops , or in Crocs when I can get them on my feet. I have big very very extremely wide feet sz15 6 EEEEEE wide with very fat wide toe that are equally straight across making my foot very very wide at 6 1/2 inches wide from my big toe to my lil toe. It is a very extremely wide foot. Crocs is the only closed-toed shoe that will barely fit on my foot. I have to cut a section out in the toe box for 2 of my toes to hang out of the Crocs just for the crocs to fit on my foot. I will admit it does look funny. I can't wear shoes or socks because my foot out-grow shoes and socks 33 years ago so it's either barefooted 👣, flip-flops , or crocs that I can wear. I apologize for rambling man. Good video man.

@@NOT_FOR_HIRE oh you got wide feet too that's cool to here man. So you know the troubles of trying to find something wide for the foot. I know exactly what you mean by shoes hurting your feet. I had to cut the top part of the toe box off the shoe one time to you stop the pain of my toes being crushed from the shoe. Yeah man thank God that your foot is not as wide as mine. It also don't help that my toes are very fat & wide & straight across too instead of being at a 45-degree angle like everybody else's toes are. That was awesome to hear man.

I love that big green thing. Those old cabovers were cool. Too bad those PB Blaster (and like product ) cans can't be refilled.

The selonoid on the cab heater line is to shut off the cab heater block when it's not required. If it's removed the heater controls won't work, as the flow will always be on. The engine valves are only there to turn off the cab heating for the summer. It could also be part of the AC, for defrosting the condenser coils if it is freezing up.

Those acorns in the cab say that there is a squirrel size opening into the cab somewhere that you'll want to find and plug.

That "Formula" decal you picked off the intake... The Formulas ran lower RPM for fuel economy (under 2,000). You can crank them up to 2,100-2,200rpm to take advantage of a little more rpm range without hurting them. If that's where it already goes, it's already been turned up by someone in it's life.
