Time to address the rest of the cooling system parts. We also get another coat of highway yellow on the parts. Overall, progress continues on the 1939 Cat D4 / RD4 agricultural crawler with a D4400 diesel engine. 4G9986 "Lil Lefty" has never been so much fun and fulfilling. I hope you enjoy the shop talk, banter and commentary.
We are operators pretending to be mechanics!
Thanks for watching!
Regards,
Aaron & Greg "The cleaner"

“I can quit any time I want to.” Yeah, right! However, we sure do enjoy your addiction!

As long as you keep a path from the shop to your house. Don’t worry about your addiction. Looks like there is still plenty of room for more. Good luck guys!

I think he would say the more yellow on each machine the better . They have a heap of work both mechanically and parts sourcing

Yes it is an addiction. I have a picture of my dad and i on the D2 he plowed with when he was 10 yrs old. I dreemed or craved to own a D2 since then. Unfortunately i dont have that D2 but now have my own. It seems i think about driving mine, working on it, looking for parts and tools on ebay, is consuming more of my time. My kids are now driving it around. And yes, my addiction started when i was really young. And i agree, it is an addiction good or bad...could be worse.

You start with one then you need another for spares and then since the spare is too good to take apart , you need another it never ends

Brazing that cast iron flange might be a better solution than JB Weld.

You're definitely right. In the end, I think we're going to end up with the other one. Probably going to use the other fuel tower too.

As I remember Cat sold an adapter to make smaller gauges fit in larger holes. I did that on my D4 7U forty years ago.

I'll look for one that's probably going to be the best option.

Your addiction is contagious. I picked up an old Allis HD7 from Silas the Adventures Made From Scratch YT channel. I may need some advice from the pros on this one….

I'm pretty sure that Toby ,Sqauch253, has a person that he uses to rebuild the original Cat gauges back to "like new". He may even have new gauge face decals.

I will look into a restoration service. A friend of mine talked to Toby at the swap Meet yesterday. He was looking for gauges for me and when he asked Toby I think the response was a chuckle, 🤣.

The old Syphone gauges where something else. I have seen some new gauges fitted with spacers but it looks funky to say the least. However it's sometimes better than having zero gauges. You can use something else turning the engine break in until you figure out what to do with the OEM gauge. The new paint looks amazing :)

Thanks Steve! The gauge might go on a back burner for now. My quest so far it has been like searching for a unicorn. I may do my best just to refurb the one I have. Got some thinking to do, 🤔.

I have an immaculate temp gauge in my parts D2 that i would love to have in my runner instead of the generic one it has. But i cant get the sender out of the block. I tried heating but the gauge pegs out and i dont want to damage the gauge by overheating. Its frustrating knowing its there but cant budge it. Love your channel. Keep up the good work.

We have had some success tapping the fittings with hammers gently all the way around. It definitely was a struggle to get it apart. Glad you are enjoying the channel. Very happy to have you here with us! 😊
