Welcome to Little Steps, Big Gains,
In this video, we will look at an exciting research article entitled- “Intensive Coordinative Training Improves Motor Performance in Degenerative Cerebellar Diseases”.
This study is particularly exciting because while there is an abundance of evidence to support the benefits of exercise for acquired ataxias, this study shows that exercise CAN improve balance, gait and postural control in individuals with progressive and degenerative ataxias as well.
For those interested in accessing the full research article, a list of exercises performed in this study, and/or other resources by physiotherapist Doris Brötz, links and resources are included below.

Hi Debra! I'm just THRILLED to hear that you've found this channel and that it may be of help to you :) Yes, although this is the most challenging 30-day program, remember to feel free to modify the moves custom for you. Also it's not meant to be 30-days in a row... just 30-days to add diversity. I hope you jump in and keep us posted on how you're doing!

I think I missed it. I don't know anyone with Ataxia that could stand and do any of these exercises..

Hi Julie... Yes I agree, they are very advanced for anyone with or without a neurological condition. However these are the exact exercises performed in a research study with 16 individuals with progressive ataxia due to cerebellar degeneration or degeneration of afferent pathways. I even reached out to both the researcher and physiotherapist in Germany to confirm these were done correctly. Based on their scoring, these individuals were early on in the progression. Being that they are advanced, I have had many of my patients modify... Such as stand at a wall instead of the floor or sit to stands from a chair instead of the floor, etc. So while I agree with you, the participants of these evidence based exercises had ataxia. Since they are so advanced, for the next program, I picked a different research study by Amy Bastian. This one is the "stability for mobility challenge". Dr Bastian allows for more modifications as those exercises can be more inclusive to all levels of severity with ataxia.

You're more than welcome! Yes the physiotherapist in this researcher study, Doris Brutz, recommended 10 reps of each. I created the 30 day sessions to continue the same exercises yet add some diversity in the dosage to avoid bordem :) I am grateful for these researchers for their life work truly helping create evidence -based tools that show how certain exercises can truly help various neurological conditions! I'm currently working on the next 30-day challenge based on another specific research study and am eager to release:) Thanks for this encouraging comment! Your words and feedback are meaningful to me

I'm sorry to hear that. Is it the exercises? These are very advanced and there are different less intensive exercises that can help. Having ataxia is very overwhelming. You most definitely are not alone. Do you have access to any support groups?

Totally useless. Since first diagnosed. Started with one walking stick. Maybe before ,first signs of Ataxia but for me, useless. I do strength training , so when I fall( and I will ) I can get up. Now to chair stage.

Hi Diane. I'm sorry to hear about your progression. To clarify, are you referring to the exercises as useless? They are very advanced movements and I was surprised that the researchers chose such difficult exercises. There is some great research that supports sitting or laying core exercises for stability. KZbin has a lot of sitting yoga/Pilates, and/or I have some free programs I can guide you towards if your interested. Either way, it sounds like things difficult right now. If you haven't already, there are some great ataxia support groups. They can provide some encouragement that you are not alone
