Cop Stood Down for Catching Criminals

You’d think catching criminals during a youth crime crisis would be rewarded. Nope, not for Senior Sergeant Arron Ottaway. Sen Sgt Ottaway works as a district duty officer on the Gold Coast, a role which requires split-second decisions to be made regularly. Earlier this year, a group of thieves had stolen an Audi Q5 on January 29. On January 31, the Audi was driven to a house in the Gold Coast and people armed with weapons got out and threatened people at the home before stealing a Volkswagen Arteon. On February 1, police deployed tyre-deflating devices to try to catch the criminals. For 18 minutes, the Volkswagen was driving on its rims, so Sen Sgt Ottaway authorised the pursuing officers to ram the stolen car in order to stop the criminals. It worked and the criminals were arrested. However, Sen Sgt Ottaway was stood down for not following protocol. You know, catching criminals during a statewide crime crisis is a big no-no here in Queensland.
This is the second time Sen Sgt Ottaway has been stood down, after he was last year placed on desk duties after allowing police to perform a precision immobilisation technique (PIT) manoeuvre in order to stop a stolen car driven by teens. After the sanction, an anonymous police officer stated, “Our boss has been benched because he was trying to catch crooks. We have never been taught or trained on how to box in or PIT a car. The offenders were never going to stop.”
In response to the most recent stand down of Sen Sgt Ottaway, Queensland Police Union President Ian Leavers stated, “This is an example of the disconnect between senior management in the South Eastern Police Region and frontline police. Senior Sergeant Ottaway should be receiving commendation for coordinating the apprehension of serious criminals and instead the police hierarchy are standing him down from operational duty. It is no surprise crime is out of control in the Gold Coast when the police hierarchy are so out of touch with frontline policing that they would rather stand down hard working police than let them apprehend criminals.”
Actually, in the middle of 2023, some leaked police emails showed how frustrated Sen Sgt Ottaway was with the chronic shortage of police officers amid a crime crisis. The emails read, “The QPS is asking too much of me - I cannot continue to work by myself as a DDO on the Gold Coast at peak times, or I will make a mistake that will have a high consequence. We, as DDOs, are continually getting asked to overview more, make more decisions, run multiple high-risk jobs, consider high-risk domestic violence offenders, liaise with Queensland Ambulance over mental health, approve transports … you get it, the list goes on.
“There are so many jobs and competing interests that I’m losing my mind. Tonight has been relentless, just like last night. Last night, I didn’t stand up for four-and-a-half hours due to the workload. I eat at the computer.”
“Three stolen cars were rolling through the Gold Coast, one at high speed treating the highway like a racetrack. So bad was the driving that members of the public were calling Triple 0. So frustrated are the members of the public, that instead of calling police when the crooks were actually breaking into the house, the street got together, chased the baddies and smashed the front windscreen of the stolen car they were in.”
“An off-duty senior commissioned officer rang for help because a UID (under the influence of drugs), violent, shirtless offender was in his yard and he was rolling around on the ground fighting with him. It gets worse. The off-duty officer and his wife had called a number of times. You guessed it - no cops, no on-road DDO, no regional duty officer to go.”
“I have to decide on countless occasions whether to allow police crews to transport a mental health patient to hospital because an ambulance did not turn up or was unavailable. I’m asked to decide, with zero medical training and virtually no information, of whether I should allow our people to do these transports. I guess I’ll be the one in trouble for that as well when the patient dies in police custody.”
As you can tell, Sen Sgt Ottaway and other Queensland Police are under extreme pressure with lack of resources and lack of support. But yet, when they catch criminals, they’re not supported by senior management, instead, they get punished. What does Commissioner Katarina Carroll have to say? What the hell is wrong with the QPS?

The police hierarchy have been piss weak for thirty years . Morons and arselickers get promoted , people who have never seen a dawn from the front seat of a police car, pen pushers and pregnant on leave personnel get promoted , people who would rather work the Monday morning day shift every day of their career and wander around with a clipboard in between coffees are ruling in the police . It’s a political nightmare being a policeman and actually working as a policeman, the commissioner I’m sure has great qualifications because she has spent her life studying bullshit courses and never actually been a street copper unless it was for the shortest possible time to check the box and then straight to non operational command , Thus the path the to the commission she holds, rear echelon People who have never worked get the most money and pension in the police .

This is designed to protect the perpetrator and bugger all the other people around him. Another classic example of this type was this incident involving James Gargasoulas, when in some sort raged, run over and killed 6 people in Melbourne. The police pleaded with their superiors, we need to stop this guy, he is out of control, he will kill someone. But, they said no, you may put him danger. We should also consider how many staff are leaving the Queensland Police Service and personally, the current Police Commissioner should step aside. The President of the Queensland Police Union doesn't get it wrong and fully supports his members. Perhaps the Commissioner and her team should consider that the priority is to ensure Public Safety but when we have a political party clearly intent on allowing criminals to do what they want, I would like to see our traffic police trained in PIT procedures. The cops who work the hardest, in high crime areas and the most dedicated are the ones who often end up burnt out, chronic PTSD and unable to work again. And looked down upon now as unemployable. The lazy cops, from my experience, spent time studying for promotions, avoided work like the plague, shonked jobs - writing off solvable crimes with some creative writing. Also operationally incompetent cops. They got less complaints, had less court matters - so were far more flexible with transfers, put on Strike Forces and other specialist areas where they could add more to their CVs and get the commendations. They get offered courses, then of course look more qualified and competent than you. I have lots of first-hand experience of seeing all of this. I recall Duty Officers floundering and wanting my help. They were Inspectors and I was a Detective senior constable. A lowly DSC. But I knew more than them on things you'd expect such a senior rank to know. They ended up with high paid positions and several getting head hunted by private sector. Also other lower ranked lazy, incompetent cops now earning huge $$ after switching to private sector jobs from CVs that are total BS. The burnt out cops medically discharged - scrap heap. Suicide, mental and physical health problems, low income. I can't even afford to live fulltime in Australia anymore. Lowly lumpsum I was convinced to take by my barrister who reminded me of cop-hating judges and their bias if my matter went to trial.

Bangkok 2003 to 2004 where crime was sky high was handled with aplomb by devoted civic minded citizens who made their own law, policed it, adjudicated if there was a violation of their law, and meted out punishment. A umber of people were "fished out of the Chao Phraya River" who Police said were victims of a "gangland" execution. Rodrigo Duturte of the Philippines gave the world a lesson on how NOT to pussy foot around with left wing, bleeding heart, P. C. BRIGADE wanna be's. So in America you can pursue criminals but you can't here? Also nobody here can defend themselves, either non lethally (pepper spray, foldable batons etc) or lethally. This country is falling apart 😂 Also, there's a device police SHOULD use (they do in other countries) which traps the wheels of the suspect's car and prevents them from driving. It's basically a net. I don't see why police here can't use that. I'd rather police pursue criminals than just allow them to do what they do. It's ridiculous.

Greetings from Cape Town, South Africa. I have been watching 7 and 9 News for some time and I am lost for words at the rampages of these criminal youths. SA has and always has had a major crime problem, but this sort of behavior would not be tolerated for one second here. All homes and businesses are hardened against criminal incursion, and I feel absolutely safe at home. As for self-defence, deadly force is permitted in certain very well defined circumstances. There is a firearm licence category specifically for self-defence (handgun or shotgun). I recall a story of youths in a stolen car (Townsville?) ramming a police car and the police retreating! If this happened in SA, the police would have mag dumped the car, possibly with a R5 assault rifle. I guess these ideas would cause exploding heads among senior police officials in QLD!
