Firstly Ronaldo's debut was against Bolton not Portsmouth....secondly, apart from maybe his first season you can't class him as a winger he is more of a striker and at the very least a second striker (and from his 4th season at ManUtd onwards a very good second striker) even if the team sheet said he was playing out wide he cut inside way too many times for a winger so he played a free role actually. He didn't put in enough crosses, assist enough goals or track back enough to be a traditional winger....that'll be why he scored an abnormal amount of goals from open play for a "winger" in his latter years at the club because if he beats his man on the wing he rarely follows this up by crossing the ball like wingers do, he always tries to hold on to the ball after and try to score himself where as wingers are quite unselfish players. Also, some wingers rarely need to go past a defender to be in a position to cross it into the box if they're good at crossing (which you should be if you're a winger), they can often cross early without having to beat the man first but Ronaldo likes to entertain and has the skills-the quick feet and the pace to beat players quite easily so he does this instead, but he's not a winger.
