I’ve been driving in the oilfield for almost 5 years. We rarely get pulled for inspections in the rigs but almost always get pulled in with the 550s. Dot has openly admitted that they do it because they’re much easier and faster inspections.

By the way on your trailer brakes. When you're trailer is empty. Roll one wheel up on a block and then adjust the 2 wheels that are off the ground. Adjust till you can't turn the wheel and then back off till you can roll the wheel.
@shauncollins20173 жыл бұрын
Just a friendly tip....With the Accord, I would have flipped it around so the nose was facing backwards. Without a windshield, its a giant parachute at the front of your trailer plus theirs a chance you could blow out the backwindow. Also rip off any loose parts on these wrecked cars and throw it inside the car. Mirrors, fenders, headlights just rip them off and throw them inside. DOT will ding you for having parts flapping around on a wrecked car.

I had 14 ply tires. I found the Transeagle in 16 ply. I could immediately tell that the sidewalls were stiffer as the trailer did not sway at all.

Hey CP Miller this is how the scales work in Florida for most of them they weigh every 5th truck that goes thru them and when you get your cdl the ag station is also a fuel inspection site. And congratulations on getting your permit

I fall more and more in love with these fender every time I see them.. they have me currently trying to design my own on my blueprint machine, going for a look similar to yours but I’m purposely making them look more “boxy” look to blend into my second gen better for a classic look. Happy for ya Steve!! Love being sent you way from my family and myself from New York as per usual!! Have a great trip BRUVA’!!!!!!!!!

They weigh me and even gave me a level 1 when I'm empty. Seems like they are trying to catch you assuming you can bypass when you are empty. I never bypass the AG stations unless the sign tells you to (when the ramp is full). I also use the Keep Trucking App, but have it set to the 15 minute setting. I figured since an actual paper log is to the nearest 15 minutes then that's good enough. So when you stop to fuel up 2 minutes before the hour, it will log it in at 15 minutes before the hour. If you wait until 15 minutes after the hour, that 17 minute actual stop logs it as 30 minutes...enough for the required 30 minute break if you need it!

Steve whenever they are forklift on like that, I would always have them lift first unit up like normal... Then I would back the truck up and the nose of the car would sit way up in the neck. Even with your winch mounted the way u have it so can gain a foot or 2 in overall length... Sometimes ya need it

I've done that. My last load I couldn't because the car was too low but I would've pulled it up further had I gotten a third one.

Good stuff, there's a video on here "How Florida weigh stations work", there more high tech then you know, the one arch you drive under takes infra red photos of your rig and can tell which brakes are adjusted properly by using temperature. They use license plate recognition along with many photos taken of YOU in the driver seat and about every angle of your rig, whether your pulled in or driving by at 70 mph on I-95, time stamps it and puts it in a data base. Then the next time your license plate is recognized in there system, it compares in milliseconds the time stamp and there computer will pull you in based on set parameters, like, should this driver be driving 16 hours after the last photos were taken.... yeah, ask me how I know this, when the DOT man hands you a photo of you driving by at 70 mph(St George, SC I-95N) and it doesn't match your log book, there's nothing your gonna say to get out of that one. $358 falsifying log book and pull around back and take a 10 hour break. Happened to me years ago in SC, had a buddy Happened to in FL, I-75 Punta Gorda, So I learned to do it right, I'm sure you all are, its not worth risking everything to fudge a log book to keep a dispatcher or broker happy. It's not there license that gets points.

You ever thought about running the 17.5x6.75 steel wheels like are on some equipment trailers? I think that’ll let you get into the 16 ply low pro tires. 14s on those wheels you got will be a big improvement but I looked into the 17.5s for my equipment trailer and saw that the wheels themself had a 6500lbs rating. Might be a chunk of change but reliability and longevity might go way up also should increase the weight rating of your trailer. If you look at equipment trailers with them opposed to ones with regular 8 lug single wheels the solid steel with 17.5s have a 2-3k higher rating.

What percentage of your time and costs are just paying for equipment and overhead expenses ? So how many days a week, hours and miles do you have to work to just break even ? Then at what point are you deferring your 1099 earnings into a 401k ?
@CPSteveMiller3 жыл бұрын
My overhead isn't much. I take home more now than I was when I was making 28 an hour at my old job. If you're paying taxes as a hotshot you aren't spending enough. Every mile is a write off. Any maintenence is a write off. I work 6 days out and stay home for 3 usually but that's not the end goal. Once I'm debt free I will be home daily doing this. Right now I'm working on 5 days out 2 days home(starting this week). You can work legally 14 hours a day. 3 days from nj to Florida pays 3k minimum. It's the up that I'm still learning. Fuel is 700 to 800 a week. Insurance and misc expenses vary. I pay the company I'm leased under 125 a week for insurance and misc fees and 10 percent of each load. Dispatch is 3% and 2% is deducted if the company gets paid from the customer directly. All in all if I made 4k in a week I got to keep 2000 to 2500 of it. Just my experience. Weeks will vary though. I've made more and I've made less
@CPSteveMiller3 жыл бұрын
As for the 401k I will never do that. I save and invest my money as it comes in. I don't trust any of that stuff. The government is too shady. Too many retired people screwed over.
@CPSteveMiller3 жыл бұрын
Pretty much if you look at this like a job, you're thinking in the wrong. It's a lifestyle. It's an investment for your future and a stepping stone to other doors. I love this work but it's the reason I'll be debt free next year. It's the reason I could afford to pay that 24k in the 6 months they wanted it or I'd have to go to court and fight. I plan on opening a company again in the future because of this. Home everyday but it is a lot of work but is worth it if you're patient and willing to do the work. Just my 2 cents🙂
@chriskahlson3 жыл бұрын
@@CPSteveMiller once you have $100,000 and zero debt you’ll feel secure. You should be putting $1000- a week before paying any taxes in a individual 401k, you’ll have $100,000 in two years that nobody can take even if you go bankrupt.
