I love the way you use etymology as a storytelling tool. That you can take something as dry as a Thesaurus and conjure from it millennia of human insight, tribulation and intellectual growth is an act of modern wizardry. A thousand years ago I probably would have burned you at the stake for your nigh mystical rhetorical abilities, but believe me when I say that it would have been a gesture of utmost respect and reverence. I really get a lot out of this channel. One of the things that I liked most about documentary shows like Carl Sagan's _COSMOS_ (PBS), and James Burke's _The Day The Universe Changed_ (BBC) and _Connections_ (BBC) was the biographies of the scientists whose discoveries were so pivotal. This channel does that in spades and I love it! One thing that I (as a Christian) appreciate VERY MUCH is that the narrator is careful never to call Catholicism, "Christianity". That HAS to be on purpose because it is such a common occurrence in science documentaries. Words have meaning and the word "Christian" has a specific definition that the world SO wants to change (but I won't let it). "Christian" is defined in the New Testament and anyone who reads the New Testament quickly sees that the religion defined there is NOT the Catholic religion. And the publisher of these videos seems to understand that. Well done!

It's a great story. While I was somewhat aware that not all ancient cultures worshipped Sun it's surprising to see how unsignificant it was through the history. Probably it's because they didn't see it as a source of light itself but more of time keeper. Nowadays it's obvious that Sun is both life bringer as well as destroyer of life on Earth

Great vid. I love how the geocentrists have hardcore the final laugh based on what TECHNICALLY is just a technicality, namely that Earth is the center of the observable universe. And also, how the anthropic principle puts the ground wherever a sentient observer treads into the center of metaphysics. Whether hypothetical universes or other places that can never be accessed and observed, not even hypothetically (i.e. this disqualifies even things outside our light cone, as we could theoretically access outside it if humans arose e.g. 1 million years earlier), are actually metaphysically meaningful and truly "exist" is a question only the gods can answer.
@parallaxnick6372 жыл бұрын
The problem for the geocentrists is that EVERY point in the universe is the centre, so Earth being the centre isn't all that.

One other point to make about "De Revolutionibus" is that it is rife with mathematics. Known as "astronomer", Copernicus was more a mathematician (hence also his perfectly sane conclusions regarding the circulation of valuable coins & regulation of the price of bread) than a lawyer, physician, administrator or astronomer. Also, for two years, he presided the diocesan court of justice of his uncle, which is puzzling, as there was (and still is) a total ban in the Church for non-ordained men to be appointed to such a position. For this reason, the debate whether he was, or was not, ordained as a Catholic presbyter, is still ongoing.

The flat-earthers still use that same violently ignorant “logic”, that which ignores gravity and assumes that an object that drops to the earth (in freefall, they can’t explain how objects actually fall) should fall behind the rotation as it drops. They’re basically using a pre-science understanding of the natural world, and ignore all of the observations and experiments done to date. Excellent episode as always Nick!

In the Book of Genesis, it is important to distinguish between Day 1 ("Let there be light") and Day 4 "Let there be lights in the vault of the sky..."). Day 1 refers to the universe as a whole. Day 4 refers to the light(s) within our solar system. Makes perfect sense to me. Our solar system was formed when the universe was already about 8 or 9 billion year old. It also helps to understand the seven days not literally. Genesis is a story using allegory to express theological truths which, by definition, cannot be proved or disproved using the methods of physical science. Physical science, by definition, cannot be proved or disproved by metaphysical (theological and philosophical) science. Each science can only respect the other.

Plato seems to have been a proto Panentheist whereby the universe exists in something else which also interpretates and animates the universe but is transcendent of it.Ideas which Plotinus refined with his emanation theories 600 years later.

Initially the Catholic church accepted Copernicus' view But Copernicus gained ridicule Protestants, who condemned it as heresy. While the Catholic Church initially accepted heliocentricity, Catholics eventually joined the wave of Protestant opposition and banned the book in 1616. The Protestant churches accepted Copernicus’ findings after more evidence emerged to support it. The Catholic Church, however, remained ground in its anti-Copernican beliefs until the 19th century. The ban on Copernicus's views was lifted in 1822, and the ban on his book until 1835. There is a gaping difference between Christianity and Catholicism. Copernicus was a Catholic and in good standing with the Catholic Church when he died. While heliocentric theory was controversial during Copernicus’ lifetime his work did not cause him any conflict with the Catholic Church. Copernicus delayed releasing his theory because he feared an adverse reaction - not from Church leaders, but from his fellow scholars. There is absolutely no evidence to suggest that Copernicus was worried about a hostile reaction from the Church. Despite the resistance to Copernican views after he died, Copernicus' life was one immersed in Catholicism. And while it may be forgotten, it is under the auspices of the Catholic Church that Copernicus made his theories known. There is nothing in the Bible that that makes the earth the center of the sun and planets and star.

I liked the videos on Kepler, so I decided to check out this earlier one. It is far less polished. Here are my comments. Re Stonehenge and other prehistoric monuments, Lynne Kelly's theories are worth looking into if the topic interests you. We can't reconstruct the mythology of a specific prehistoric culture, but we can make general inferences about what would have been important to cultures transitioning from a mobile to a settled lifestyle, and this can give us surprisingly rich insights. Re Aristarchus, you tell the listener that we should be surprised he was not executed, but you say nothing to persuade us that it is surprising. Those occasions where a philosopher came in conflict with the authorities (e.g. Anaxagoras) could just as easily be the anamolies. The discussion of equants and tusi couples is far too brief and unclear. It comes across as a hasty summary for viewers already familiar with the topic. This would have been worth taking the time to explain well. There is a lot of context missing re the eventual placement of Copernicus's work on the list of banned books. I hope this will be rectified when the video on Galileo comes out.
@parallaxnick6372 жыл бұрын
