Hi Paul, I am a cancer mentor- interesting parallels with what your experiencing, the big conflict comes from doing what you want, the things that make you happy, vs the things you feel you should be doing for the family at the expense of personal happiness- it’s a difficult call. Eventually you find a path between - Don’t give up on something that makes you happy - life is long and at times hard - without joy in it - Took me 3 years to get back on track . You rock bro, 👍

Paul, as a 4 year clean recovering alcoholic, some of the things we learn is, take just one day at a time, don't over-complicate things and probably most important, set boundaries for you, for your own well being. So it appears that, that is what you're doing. Good for you and good for us as we still get to enjoy and learn from your videos. Thank you brother, continue to take good care.

If I'm being honest Paul, I preferred your older content and lots of other youtubers content that wasnt overly 'produced'. You still make really good videos, i'll still continue to watch and I've learnt lots from your gear reviews. But over the last two years over covid its been apparent that people are trying to make 'movie' quality experiences in their content. When you watch some youtube videos that are clearly not about the adventure, its about how many camera angles they can get in walking the same 100m, it makes me lose my interest. I've started to get into bushcraft, as I work in a school and currently training to be a forest school leader, and have just started to watch people like Greencraft, Hidden Valley Bushcraft and RobEvans, great content, and great knowledgeable presenters. I originally started to watch your videos to learn about wild/normal camping and loved your down to earth, personal and passionate approach to it, as it was about the adventure. You make the content you enjoy making Paul, its how you started, and how people fell in love with watching your channel.

Paul I have been enjoying your videos for a few years. I was a Girl Guide growing up and camping is a big part of that but it was nothing like what you do. I knew nothing about stealth camping before I started going along on your adventures (via your videos). I thought it was all amazing. When, a few times you were out, you would say “I have to be up and packed up early, got to be at the school…” I thought to myself ‘Wow! He is going out on a one night sleepover and has to be at school to start his regular job’, I was, frankly, amazed that you would spend an evening up in the hills, with tent and all the accoutrements needed for stealth camping, and then be off in the morning to get to your workplace. I not only learned what stealth camping is, You taught me a lot about what is needed for stealth camping, tents, cookware, why you prefer a quilt rather than a sleeping bag, the food you prepare for yourself, and the places you hike to and set your tent up at. It was all new to me and I drank it all in. I am a woman in love with stealth camping though I have never done any, and it is not likely I would be able to. I turned 65 years old a few weeks ago. I work 12 hour shifts as a security guard, 5 days in a row with five days off. I don’t have a lot of energy for hiking and camping any more. I live in a small town in Ontario, Canada. I do love getting out with my camera. Photography got me through chemotherapy treatments and radiation treatments a few years ago. And I was introduced to James Popsys through your videos. I follow him and Thomas Heaton, and now I also follow the chap in New Zealand, Tony and his dog Bruce (AB Camping), and a chap in the USA, Luke (The Outdoor Gear Review). I follow these guys because of your videos. You caught my interest Paul and it has grown. I spend hours with all of you folks online, for me it is a stress free way to get down and relax. Not to mention the education I am getting. I love watching, and seeing where you hike to, and the vistas you share. I have friends in Portland (the Royal Manor and Isle of) I have not been there, but my friend Sylvia has sent me many photos of the island and various walking trails along its coastline, and it is indeed beautiful. And now I see another part of Britain that is just as beautiful and breathtaking because you go out and take us all with you. Do what you need to do, Paul. And do it the way you want to do it. Never let anyone tell you “it has to be done this way”. In your forties and you have found the truth of it. You and Jo, have many years of adventuring ahead of you. Simple is very good and I believe you are on the right track. You will always have us checking in to see where you’ve been and what you have to share. Cheers, Gaylin

I'm currently battling cancer and, if it's taught me one thing (as a 50 year bloke), it's that it's good to talk. Don't worry though, I'll beat it and how to see you out on the Fells soon. I've watched you for a couple of years and it's clear that whilst the great reviews are very informative, the biggest draw to your channel is you. Your personality and honesty makes your channel eminently watchable. You should absolutely run your channel on your terms only! it's your thing and you know best. Period! Just watched the “I’ve ruined my dream job” & then immediately watched this one. I wasn’t sure where to leave my comments, but you struck a cord. Guilty as charged here, 54 year old, worked hard when in education, got the job at the global company which I’ve been working for for over 30 years, & struggling with recent directions my department has been going in over past couple of years, teenage kids who don’t want to know mum & dad so much, house & mortgage & all that…have I ticked all your boxes yet ;-) Ive been following your channel for around a year I guess, I’ve never gone wild camping, but it appeals, I enjoy photography so the idea of catching good light over a stunning landscape at dusk and dawn chimes with wild camping. But my location (south coast), full time job, family life etc doesn’t leave much free time to do ‘me’ stuff. Your videos have helped me hugely. I aspire to go wild camping to help further my photography. Over the past year I’ve been slowly getting some kit sorted your videos have been great research. I am there now, and anticipate some trips to places like the Lake & Peak districts in the coming months, but I will be that ‘all the gear, no idea’ person. Just keep on doing what you have done, why change a winning formula? It’s the combo of the trips and the observations about the gear you have used during the trips that work. PS if you ever want to do a video on a newbie to wild camping….or want a closer look at a Tarptent Stratospire Li (my choice of tent after many months of research), then feel free to make contact, happy to help in anyway I can.

Hello Paul from NZ, I have been tramping (hiking) the mountains for over 50 years and it is the mountains that have kept me sane. When I am out there for a few days I realize that all I have in the world is what's on my back. At home there is a double garage full of stuff that I haven't seen for years, there are boxes of stuff and cupboards of stuff that have been collected over life's journey, but for that moment in time, in the mountains, it doesn't exist. An old fellow told me when I was 16 " As you go through life, keep your bags packed lightly" I have only come to understand what he meant. He wasn't just talking about possessions but about taking on to much mentally . So now in my retirement years I am still walking the mountains and enjoying live. Keep walking the hills it wards off stress and every thing that goes with it and remember; 'to keep your bags packed lightly'. Cheers ATB from NZ. A kindred spirit.

Hey bro this is Derek again, it looks like people given you good advice on burn out. I loved backpacking and camping when i was young and in the Boy Scouts. Then i joined the US Army and did so much training in the woods for 20 years that I never wanted to go camping again. After i retired from the Army, it took about 2 year's before i got the urge to go backpacking and camping and i love it again but i can't look at it like i was in the Army, i basically had to divorce the Army from my mind and absolutely love backpacking again, and have to take a break from it once in a while in which i could not do in the Army. Just take a break from it once in a while. It looks like you have got it figured out and i will keep watching your videos when you do them. Hi Paul. Just seen this video and the previous one together. One thing that struck me is your phrase 'it's okay to not be okay' - so true. We all go through this stuff at times (plural) in our lives. Some days are amazing and then some days we crash. We do, and will do, both. Nothing stays the same forever, things always change. You mentioned the use of social media and how you look for feedback from others from it. So glad you've dropped it all, as I did a couple of years ago. I also dropped the day job to follow my hobby. I created some wonderful stuff but I was left feeling unfulfilled as well. So time to make changes. I know that your videos are good - I think most people would agree with that. I enjoy watching your productions and your advice. Thank you for all that you do. My advice is trust what you know yourself about you and what Jo tells you too. Do stuff that makes you happy. Be around happy honest folks and ditch the others. Don't stop rambling, don't stop camping. The outdoors is there for you to have.

Most of us started watching you BECAUSE you were doing what you loved,, and we could tell that you were speaking from your heart about your love of the outdoors and your love of camping!! Then all the analytical crap and media algorithms and content makers opinions and influences got in the way, and blinded you to why you really put yourself out there. I LOVE watching you because of how you actually TALK to us about how you feel, even when you're trap0ed in a tent with gale force winds whipping at your tent, with the sky pouring buckets of rain on you! You are so "matter-of-fact" in your tone, and you just come across as a regular "bloke" just having a calm conversation about what you love to do, and NOT like a professor instructing his students! Please, please, please continue to do what you LOVE to do, and don't worry about all the other crap! I look forward to your posts, and I enjoy your normal, calm voice as you describe the scenery, or your gear, or how you fix an amazing meal while lying in your tent on one elbow, sautéing up steak and asparagus and potatoes and coffee. I don't usually comment on the "Tube of You" channels, but you are worth sending my thoughts to, and I hope you come to realize just how many people like me really love watching you do you! Best wishes!

Thanks Paul, I’ve enjoyed your videos over the years, watching you speak out about your feelings was one of the best. It’s one thing talking tents and camping but helping other people struggling with life’s problems whilst you go through it is for me the mark of a special person. Keep talking, look after the family and treat yourself well, you deserve it.

Paul, Do what you love. It may look very different from what it looks like now. Your ability to connect with people, especially on video, is a rare talent. Being able to talk about burnout is exceptional in itself. We tune in because of who you are. We are connected. You go, man.

I didn’t comment on your last video but I want to say thank you for your bravery in posting it. By being open and communicating about how you are doing it makes it possible for other people who are having a hard time to reach out for help. I hope you got something out of it. But at the same time, you also did a fantastic thing for others who are feeling alone and isolated and need help. Thank you for being a role model. I also hope that you are getting help or are feeling lighter by getting things off your chest.

What a relief I thought you might give it all away, I'm in my 60's and have the same passion for bushwalking and camping. You always come across as a genuine and honest person which also gives you credibility. Don't push yourself, if it takes a month or two to produce a vlog so be it. Really happy you have managed to reframe things and turn it around. Whatever you’re doing, you must always realise you need time to yourself to decompress and make sure whatever you’re doing lines up with you and your core beliefs. Once you start pressuring yourself into being something you’re not, things will inevitably go wrong. It’s not until something like this happens that you realise you need to look after yourself and focus on what’s really important to you. A lot of us have experienced something similar one way or another. It was thanks to your channel and a couple of others that really got me back into nature and to start wild camping. So you have my eternal gratitude for that. It’s something that greatly benefits my every day life and being happy. Keep it simple and what you enjoy. The rest will follow. Looking forward to your future content, however you want to do it. Cheers.

One thing that might be a great way for you to almost fall in love with camping again is to explore the things that made you love it in the first place. A series where you recreate your favourite or first camping memories would not only be a brilliant watch, but also a great way for you to relax and just enjoy camping.

As a 23 year old guy whose just seen you for the first time on your previous video.. I just want to say Thank-you. I 100% relate to everything you said. I had a large gaming channel at 19 and went through the same burnout as you. People truly underestimate the work, and it most definitely becomes your life. Constantly in your head like you said. It turned me off to using social media since (besides YT), and I ended up becoming a remote software engineer.. which has been fantastic. But I really hope you continue on. I made garbage content that didn't make much of a difference.. but you inspire people with your genuine kind attitude. Something you don't get a-lot of nowadays on youtube. Anyways, thanks so much for these videos. You got a new sub.

I'd be happy just watching you walk about that landscape, filming with a go pro and phone. From a viewer perspective almost every youtuber I follow has apologised for not making their camping or walking video 'this week'. Personally I like the change. I get bored watching the same thing. A week of 'a BBQ' in the garden or an audit of you camping equipment will be just as entertaining to me as a 2 day mountain trek.

Perhaps the channel can be focussed on sharing life's little ups and downs, just like the hills you climb ;) Keep doing what you love. I'm in my late 50's and I gave up a well-paid job, bought a touring bike and cycled to Athens. Life changing. I'm so much better for the experience. Paul, on my 2nd date with my GF we went up kinder scout via jacob's ladder and down through Edale last summer, as we were walking back to the car we walked past you (presumably) on the way to the Old Nag's Head and exchanged a greeting as you could tell I recognized you. She has ever since found it amusing how star struck I was by this random bloke walking to the pub. I told her that was the guy that made me want to come here in the first place. All the best my man

Your honesty and emotional rawness in your recent video was extremely touching. Your videos have really motivated me to get wild camping gear and get out there and to hike and camp. You have highlighted the pitfalls of how social media consumes you to constantly present the utopian position. You're doing the right thing, going back to basics and doing what is right for you. Your content inspires many of us. You're liked and followed by so many for being a normal guy sharing his passion for the outdoors. If I want camping gear, I just look to you - you've tried and tested it, and I trust you. Your not like so many others where I have to ask "do they really believe what they are saying?" So many "experts" out there, but so refreshing to watch a real expert, and a man with a true passion, sharing his adventures in an honest and open way.
