Have you thought about moving the cut out all the way to the front of the trailer, and then lifting the bed periodically to slide the trash to the back. Loading at the front would also let you use a drop hitch to lower the tongue, and get that rail as low as possible.

As I see it the dump trailer is presently the correct 'tool' for you, and probably will be for the near/medium term future. The next hurdle with the trailer will be lack of cubic foot capacity. To that end I would be putting some thought into methods of load compaction. This might require a trailer 'roof' of some sort (solid or strong mesh), and a mechanical compacter chute feeding trash bags into the front trailer wall. The 'packer' mechanism can be a simple ram (think horizontal log splitter), a large slow moving screw or an aggressive paddle pusher (look up silage bagger). You will not need hard compressive compaction, but achieving 50% more cubic feet capacity seems very doable.

Good tips! Playing around with tipping the trailer in EP 7 and focusing on slinging to the back more in EP 8. Both together will probably help moving foward.

One thing that came to my mind, a movable Tipperarm, that rides on a rail along the side of your trailer. At least, it would solve the problem of the trash in one spot. But it would need a modification of the trailer. About the hydraulics, there are electris hydraulic pumps available with 100% duty cycle but an electrical pump does not need to run constantly. With an pressure accumulator and pressureswitch, its possible to have a low dutycycle and runs only when needed.
@MrLangDog

I made that exact suggestion a cpl videos ago. That would require quite a bit of custom engineering and fabrication. (Moveable arm on a rail)

I've watched all your garbage pickup videos, and I wanted to share some thoughts from an outsider's perspective. I typically set your videos in the background while working, like a podcast. I enjoy them and look forward to each week's video. Thank you! First off, I think the trash bags are a good temporary solution and are generally effective. And, I agree that you're not quite ready for recycling yet. This is the first time I've heard you mention a once-per-year fee. Honestly, I find that surprising. Most Americans struggle to cover a $1,000 emergency, so expecting them to pay a $400 fee upfront for a service might be unrealistic. I think switching to a monthly or quarterly pricing model could help you grow much faster. The $14K you spent on the cans is a lot of capital just sitting there. Every day those 170-ish cans aren't on the curb, you're losing money. With a monthly or quarterly fee, you could generate enough cash flow to afford a non-CDL garbage truck. These are easier to drive than a trailer, and I remember you mentioning your wife's hesitation about driving the truck and trailer. A smaller garbage truck would likely be more manageable for her, especially in areas with lots of stops. Please keep the videos coming!
@CopperCreekCuts
@CopperCreekCuts 2 ай бұрын
First of all, thank you so much for the thanks! I really appreciate it! (You helped cover a few liners! :P ) I think you are 100% right about the annual fee. Quarterly rate is the next advertising method, and then monthly rate. I think you may also be right about the nonCDL truck. Something I didn't think about until yesterday (and I am ashamed I haven't) is that if I do place all 200 cans, that is $150 in liners per week or $600 per month. That might be much better spent put towards a rear load that isn't my end goal but makes me much more efficient (and like you said, my wife COULD drive that, I don't think the truck and trailer is something she will be able to tackle). Thank you again for the generosity and the comment!
@PennsylvaniaRefuseTrucks
@PennsylvaniaRefuseTrucks 2 ай бұрын
Rear loaders do not require two people. All the driver has to do is use the parking brake, get out, dump the can and then get back in the truck. Also I feel that you might not realize that garbage trucks can last up to one million miles and even over in some cases.
@CopperCreekCuts
@CopperCreekCuts 2 ай бұрын
Fair enough and valid point. I should have said they are most efficient with two. I still have the conundrum of if I want to invest that much into a rearload when the side load is the end goal. I don't think I have enough data yet to make a decision.

Naw. That's not practical for his routes, don't get me wrong I've done it when we had too and he'd only need a short single axle side loader for the 200 customers he's talking about. Hey Brad, have you considered a Texas pushoff trailer? If you were too, have a hole in the side like you do with your current dump trailer and cycle, the pushoff arm with the rear gate locked it would sweep the trash further back and so you can continue loading in one location, and it would be significantly the cheapest option that has been discussed. Great work!

One of the things that I love that you do, is you go over the comments. I think the best suggestion you ever got, is going to be the most expensive one. Once you have done trash pickup service for a long time, and you have built up the business enough to have made a hefty profit, it will be time to get a real garbage truck, which will sold your problems. Around here, trash pickup service is 100 dollars per month, but were paying on a bi-weekly schedule, of 50 dollars. I totally understand if trash pickup service is more expensive, especially for weekly pickup. It is clear to me that those can's are filling quickly in a week, so you may not be able to get people on a bi-weekly schedule.

I really like that you have well thought out, realistic goals. Don't feel bad about NOT picking up recycling - many places in Florida are limiting or stopping recycling all together - Polk County in central Florida for example, will no longer offer recycling when the contract changes later this year. Building on your comment about the rear loader in the video (and another comment you listed somewhere in the comments section)... while rear loaders are most efficient with two people, when you compare your current setup to a "one-man" rear load setup, it could be quite effective with you being the driver and loading at every stop with a smaller under CDL truck. A rear loader is a good "do everything" type truck. Think of the uses - a spare to the front line truck, clean-ups/junk removal, maybe assist the lawn business (internally billing B2B for removal of excessive brush), special events, and so on. Don't get me wrong, this is definitely an "in the future" move, but when it when it comes to growing your business, I'm fairly sure you'll be happy with investment in a rear load truck. That and rear loaders under CDL are much easier to find when compared to finding an under CDL side loader. If the goal is to eventually get automated side loaders, I would still get a rear loader first so it can eventually be a spare (in the future) to the side load. Rear loaders are fairly simple vehicles and have a relatively long life cycle when compared to other garbage trucks - remember manual labor is doing most of the work so the packer body only operates when you cycle the blade or use the cart tipper. When you get a side loader - especially an automated side loader, the dynamic will shift - the truck will be doing most of the work and because of that - automated side loaders (generally speaking) have the shortest life-cycle of any type of garbage truck. With the truck doing all the work, the arm and packer/floor wear out much faster on the automated side loaders and your maintenance costs will grow notably when compared to a rear loader. Hope that helps. Keep up the great work - I'm rooting for you!
@CopperCreekCuts
@CopperCreekCuts 2 ай бұрын
Thank you for the time you spent on this comment. Your thoughts on a rear loader are very fair and I can't find any flaw in them. An Isuzu with a rear loader is also something my wife could drive. I don't think she will be able to get comfortable enough with the truck trailer, so with that I could really unlock the efficiency of the rear load. Another thing I am ashamed I never thought of until yesterday was if I do get all 200 cans out I could be spending $150 a week or $600/mo on liners. Probably would make more sense to put that money towards the payment on a cheaper (compared to side load) rear load. While it isn't the end goal, I am learning it may be the best path foward. AND if I determine 'hey, actually this rear load isn't too bad and running as a two man crew is fine', then I can make that the plan moving forward. Good points on the side loader. Thank you again!

The one pitfall is the reflection of business progress to competitors, but if I were a competitor I’d probably just watch each video and do the math myself, which achieves the same result. Brad ask customers that pay for recycling to put recycling in a blue tinted bag or purchase some recycling decals and put them on you’re extra existing orange cans. Simply tell people to put the blue bag full of recyclables on the top inside of the can or next to the can then when you load the trash throw the lite bag containing recycling towards the back of the trailer. When you dump it whould be easy to just pull them out. Or invest in doing one more day just for recycling either using blue or clear bags or using one of your containers that you add a recycling decal to. None of your competitors offer recycling this means you can jump on it and make more money think about it. Offering recycling might just be one of the best things you did for baker county trash. This may have already been covered, but I don’t recall hearing of it. It feels like you could bring in a larger chunk of money doing 2-3 large debris pickups every Sunday. I want to clarify, when I say yard debris, I mean debris that has been placed next to the road, ready to be loaded.

Maybe a tipper mounted on rails so you can move it along the entire length of the trailer. Move it where room is left in the trailer. And the tipper should go over the wooden sideboards and thus dumps the trash from higher up for better spread in the trailer. To max this idea to the fullest have this setup on both sides of the trailer. I know this is most likely to expensive and would need custom manufacturing but I wanted to trow it out there. On another note, tipping the trailer to free up space in the front is maybe a bad idea. Shifting the weight to the back could unbalance the trailer truck combination. Driving with low or negative tongue weight is really dangerous! I am looking forward to see how you develop your business. Keep up the good work! Wishing you all the best!
@CopperCreekCuts
@CopperCreekCuts 2 ай бұрын
The tipper can move. Fenders and wheels prevent it from being mounted anywhere except where it was. Tipping the trailer back would only be done in the middle of routes where more trash could be placed up front.

To move the cover out of the way, why not try and add a fishing line weight to each of the eyelets. That way when you cover the trash, the front and back are weighted by the poles and the sides are weighted by the fishing weights.

You could convert your trailer to a gas powered system using a small gas engine with a hydraulic pump and then you could have a hydraulic arm (custom built or off the shelf). Then just use the dump to slide the trash to the back so you wouldn't have to add a sweeper arm. Something to think about down the road I guess.

Due to weight distribution and trailer stability, you must keep the most weight near the front of the trailer otherwise if the majority of the weight is near the back of the trailer you will cause the trailer to fishtail and become uncontrollable. I suggest reversing the boards on the trailer where the opening is near the back. That way you push the trash near the front of the trailer to keep the trailer stable.
@CopperCreekCuts
@CopperCreekCuts 2 ай бұрын
Good point! I am still only around 1000 pounds of trash so I don't think a 4.5K pound trailer will lose control over a few hundred pounds of rearward weight, but good to keep in mind.

So 80 grand for 200 can pick up weekly for the year, huh? And 20 cans filling the trailer, is 10 dumps a day at no compaction?.... Hmmm. Seems you so still need a couple upgrades and likely a mechanism on both sides of the trailer, like a library ladder, that slides back and forth, and then can help tip a can in. And.... Some sort of compacter because man, 10 loads a day is rough. Good on you dude. You are progressing and have the right view for sure.
@CopperCreekCuts

We just did around 30 cans yesterday. Getting better at slinging the trash in the back means more even spreading. I have room for another 10-20 cans. Will also start tipping the trailer mid route to 'compact' and move as much trash from the front as possible to make more space. Hoping to be able to fit 50 cans in a trailer. Each dump run is an hour so most likely scenario will be 100 cans per day over two days (unless I just want an absolutely brutal 12 hour day or something. Start picking the first load in the dark and show up to the landfill at 7 when they open, get last load in at 3 when they close type deal. Still don't have enough data to know what is possible yet.

Looks like the easy dump with sweeper actually compacts the waste, so a 6 yard capacity will, in reality, hold 18 yards. Depending on the strength of the latches on your trailer's tailgate, you might be able to add an internal hydrualic ram with a metal plate to squash the waste against the tailgate. This would increase trailer capacity to maybe 4x what it actually is. This could be worth doing a collab with a KZbinr who does such things. As for marketing, how about a reduced rate for those using their own cans?.
@CopperCreekCuts

Could you get a table at a local fair or job fair or farmers market and advertise that way? Or get mini trash cans that are key chains or USB ports with your business information on it. Or go to people’s houses when they put out their trash cans that aren’t yours and ask them what they are missing from their current service. What if (since you have a trailer) you offered to drive up their driveway so they would not have to put the can at the side of the road? It would take a little longer but I bet you could get a lot more customers! You could say “Are you tired of having to bring your cans to the front curb? With my service, all you have to do is bring your garbage out of the house, I’ll do the rest!”

The issue with advertising is I have VERY specific neighborhoods I want to get cans in. Broad marketing can lead to frustration if I have to tell a lot of folks 'I don't service your area'. I also don't want to start any practices (like bringing cans to the house) that I don't want to do long term.

I was thinking that maybe you could haul two trailers at the same time, but your first trailer is a tow ball system and not a fifth wheel or gooseneck hookup that would be required. Also, you have tight turns and moving two trailers would be difficult. Using a lift system off a garbage truck would be useless. Using a lift system requires hydraulics. Buying a larger trailer would mean more costs. Buying a small garbage truck from Canada would be okay because of the u.s. dollar. But I'm not sure if it's worth the effort. It might be if you're going to be doing this for awhile. I'm not sure of what your long term business goals are. Getting more customers and trying to use your current trailer means more trips to the dump and more costs, so that's out. Unless the dump is close by to your pickups. That par can system is more for garbage pickup companies that missed one pickup or four and they would send a small truck using that system to pick them up. Or a university or school division. Maybe try crowdfunding to raise money for either a downpayment or possibly the entire cost of a garbage truck.

I've been looking on a few websites for garbage trucks. I found a 2010 international 7400 garbage truck with 106,058 miles for $26,806 usd. Nice shape. 9.3 liter diesel. With the weight of 200 full garbage cans that you could pick up, it's only going to get heavier. A diesel truck hauls weight much easier than a gas engine. Maybe shopping for a garbage truck in Canada is an option. Hope this helps.
