@@shotsfiredpodcast50 Hard decision. I feel like many homes are saved by owners staying and managing embers. However, I understand civilians are not educated on fire behavior and I don’t know if they know when too much is too much. I heard a retired FF comment that when he saved his home in Malibu there was a point he had to go inside and wait for a certain part of the fire to pass over. Then he went and put out what was burning. I wouldn’t have the of that. I know it wouldn’t happen b/c they don’t want to encourage it but information on how to defend your home would probably be a good thing.

i stayed and defended my home and my neighborhood (about 15 homes burned in my area) had a bunch of spot fires started by embers had a bunch of plants catch fire if i didnt stay and put them out i would of lost my home. put out at least 10 spot fires. some hoses in my area did run dry. i had to sneak back up into my area just to put them out. had to climb up a side of a hill just to get into my area. i left once i saw active firefighters in my area patrolling.

@@shotsfiredpodcast50 I owe Los Angeles a great debt. My parents were lefties back before the Blow-J Simpson Memorial Tribute *RIOTS* back in the 1990’s. They had gone through the Newark, NJ “peaceful protests” (aka *RACE* *RIOTS*) in the 1960’s and saw their parents lose all they had in this world. Their small shops, their homes, the entire city became virtually uninhabitable when I was just a small kid. My folks respected the “Rooftop Koreans” and became 2A first time buyers. Great video, thanks!

That maybe what it looked like at first glance, but they are, in fact, collapsible buckets and you will find them on every firetruck and come in handy for spot fires, flying embers etc where you don't want to pull hoses from the main fire.

Thank you! As a former firefighter & chief officer I have been banging my head trying to explain this to people who just want to think it’s only politics. There is NO Fire Department in the U.S. or world that could’ve stopped that fire the night it started. I was listening to the radio that night. The IC called for 20 engine strike teams at the start of the incident. That’s 100 engine companies. It was a perfect storm of weather conditions.

i will rebuttal with the fact that i have heard people say that the mayor of la knew of high winds coming and that resources should have been pre staged. i also heard of when the next shift was goanna take over they sent home the current shift cause they didn't want to pay for over time. mother nature will do mother nature but also at the same time there are things that could have and should have been done better. why cut a fire departments budget in the nations state that usually burns the most every year? and i heard that the mayor was goanna cut another 40 million dollars. all in all common sense says if you have no water to fight the fire you cant really stop fire. and since Cali doesn't like to manage there forests well enough said. and i am not saying that they could have stopped the fire. but they could have maybe not had as much damage done to as much property. if a family can prevent there own home from burning down using there pool water and a pump with sprinkler the LA fire department should have been able to do better.

@TheImmoralities all I know is that in my mind there are allot of people who are suffering that could have been allot less. And having people like Mel Gibson and Denise Quaid calling out leadership in L.A. and the Governor. Ya not good. I don't know much about hydrants but if you have no water to fight fire that's not good. Plus part of the budget cuts meant that they couldn't adequately check the hydrants and test them like they should have. It was all a perfect storm. And people have suffered because of allot of mismanagement and woke mindsets.

Yet somehow an 80+ y/o couple saved their home with a garden hose. Many other homeowners saved their home using a pool pump and a garden hose. Also private fire fighters saved an entire shopping complex. All of them had water, something the fire fighters did not. Not having water in that reservoir is borderline criminal negligence.

I'm not an expert. But when I installed a fuel oil furnace in the house there is a thermal valve that will automatically close if valve reaches a certain temperature. That sounds like something that can be used on residential water lines to limit water pressure loss. I have seen videos in the palisades of water coming out of the pipes house after destroyed house.

The problem is that not everyone is physically able to evacuate a fire. My town experienced a couple of wildfires and the worst one by far had elderly people who lived alone and did not have any means to escape and some of them somehow survived but there were others who were not so lucky. That incident was the 2007 Rice Canyon Fire. My town is Fallbrook.

I live in FL (but it is the same process) and I was taught at a young age to have a "go bag" with the important stuff in it in case of an emergency like a Hurricane or fire; my father was in the Army so I got to learn the 7 P's and that never left my mind "prevention, proportion, preparation, portability, proximity, protection, and projection", something that appears not to have been taught to many people. I was also taught to write out a check list with the important stuff on it and check each off as it went into the bag, this makes exfil much, much easier.

LAFD needs to learn how to use their Class A foam to fight fires and protect exposure buildings. The Engineers need to take a pump operator class on wetting agent foam use and applications so Firefighters can stop these fires with tank water (500 gallons of water mixed with 1% foam concentrate (PFAS free). Did you know that an onboard air compressor can expand foam 20:1 making a shaving cream like consistency? It’s called CAFs (Compressed Air Foam system) and it turns 500 gallons of water into 10,000 gallons of compressed air foam. Each gallon of compressed air foam is 10 x more effective at extinguishing fires as compared to plain, untreated water. So basically that’s equal to 1 million gallons of water from an efficiency standpoint. That’s just Crazy Bones right?

Structure Firefighting and Wildland Firefighting, have different skill sets. The Palisades Fire was the worst-case scenario that the Wildland Firefighting community has always known would happen, like we all know there will be a Big Earthquake. My fire gear stayed in my truck for the last 15 years of my career. Dry Brush (Fuel), terrain, narrow roads, insufficient clearance, EMBERS EMBERS EMBERS EMBERS pushed by 90 mph Santa Ana Winds. Speaking to firefighters, the Palisade fire behavior was beyond bizarre, burning back into the winds. I patrolled the boundaries of the Palisades fire for 25 years as a LE Park Ranger/Wildland Firefighter. During the Woosley Fire in 2018, my responsibility was to patrol the areas not affected by the fire. When a Santa Ana event was predicted we went into a 24-hour fire patrol of our properties and checked known areas in the open space where the homeless were attracted to. Some Ranger trucks had fire pumps installed for fire season. I am heartbroken for the residents of the Pacific Palisades.

The short answer is yes, we do have the capability to utilize alternative water supplies like a pool in certain situations that fire conditions dictate. Those operations entail a small portable pump with minimal GPM output and multiple personnel for setup. With nearly all on scene fire personnel engaged in life saving operations and the fire conditions at hand, this would not have been a viable operation.

I think if they made the lots 20 feet wider for defensible space with no vegetation would that even help. With those kinds of winds and the flying embers? What types of roofing are they using that is flame retardant? I have so many questions about this kinda fire storm.

People keep talking about forest management. Do some research on the chaparral ecosystem. Prescribed burns do happen in so cal but they aren't particularly effective and also can be hazardous. Chaparral burns hot and fast and regrows fast. You also need conditions safe enough to do it. It hasn't rained in so cal since last spring. There is also a massive amount of this area in so cal making it an incredibly laborious task. It's really easy to point out government failure but it's much more challenging to come up with real solutions that are effective.

A state with a history of wildfire problems cut the budget for wildfires & the fire dept. yet we're supposed to believe this wasn't preventable. 😂

High Winds and a Red Flag Wildfire Warning were Forecast for Maui by the NWS, HWS, and Maui Fire Department four days prior to the Maui Fires. Lahaina fit the exact description of the area to be most affected. On Tuesday, August 8, 2023, at 2:30 pm, the Lahaina fire started. The fire started minutes after a small Fire Crew that had been fighting finally extinguished it and monitored the area for almost 8 hours, left without relief to get food. By the time they were called back, the fire had rekindled and was out of control. One Hundred and four lives were lost. Our Lahaina Town burned to the ground. People lost family members, their homes, their businesses, their cars, everything. One week prior on Tuesday, August 1, 2023, the Staffing Level for the Maui Fire and Maui Police Departments was “exactly the same numbers of Firefighters, Cops, Communication Operators and Contract Private Water Tankers as the day of the fires.” Fire Chief Brad Ventura and Police Chief John Pelletier did not see any need to plan and prepare. Chief Ventura’s department was also received the largest Fine by the Hawaii OSHA’s for the preventable Death of a Rookie Firefighter before the fires. Since the fires, both have Chiefs received Excellent Performance Evaluations from the Maui Public Safety Commission for the year, 2023.

I thought most tanks and hoses are not made out of materials that rust or get destroyed from salt water. And if they were dumping salt water for hours as they say why is it all the sudden bad to use salt water from hoses but planes are cool😏 and check out San Francisco’s redundancy in water hookups. It’s totally possible to get ocean water up to the hills. They have regular hydrants hooked into the city supply then they have some hooked into surrounding reservoirs and then they have another set of pumps and pipes dedicated to pulling unlimited water from the ocean as well as the boats which could both run lines to tenders and boost pressure into existing lines which would have all been very useful right now

The LA mayor & CA governor should be held accountable for their failure of banning control burning, not building any new water reservoirs for decades, & failure of doing proven land management. Also the LA mayor taking at least $150M from the LAFD budget to use for homeless & illegals. Also the LA mayor shutting down the water reservoir for "repairs" which is why fire fighters didn't have enough water & water pressure. Just like the Maui fire that killed over 110 people, it wasn't caused by "global warming". The fire fighters there were refused water to fight the Maui fire by the water management director.

I do not agree. Typical FD response times to small fires means that they are often big fires by the time a crew arrives. When time means everything, sleeping firefighters in their cozy beds in their station that might be no where near the vulnerable areas, means that their main goal is to leave the station within one minute. A awake Fire Watch Crew, prepositioned high up for views and providing for a quick response driving down hill means fighting the fire in one minute, not just pulling out of the barn. Fire departments are fighting today’s wildfires with 1980’s methods. Other than night flying aircraft, what has changed? The same number of firefighters at twice as many Fire Houses would be a great place to start for FD’s to join 21st Century Firefighting.

LAFD used have the manpower and equipment to augment staffing x2 and staff a robust fleet of ready reserve fire engines and pre-deploy a DOZEN in-house strike teams to the palisades, west San Fernando Valley, and north east Los Angeles (Eaglerock/Glendale area). That was how those extreme wind event days were dealt with in Los Angeles before the 2011 budget cuts.
