I think she was just retarded. Maybe had anxiety and a low IQ. She should have just checked his account to see if he had $12,000 in it. Durrrr. She seemed fairly honest during the 911 call. Stupid but didn't lie or omit anything. People who want to cause drama and put people at risk usually make shit up. "He looks like he has a gun. He threatened me. He said something about ISIS. I ran his name and he doesn't have an account here." or omit information like "He passed me a note that says give me $12,000." and nothing more. That being said, she shouldn't work at a bank if she freaks out like this over basic shit. EDIT: Plus she went to her manager with the note to ask what to do and the manager told her to call 911. So the manager should be fired also. The manager should have asked her questions and checked his account. If he has $13,000, give him $12,000. While I can understand having a dumb teller, maybe she was new, it is very hard for me to understand how a bank manager could be this stupid. EDIT2: The 911 operators need to relay the correct information. They need to stop being lazy and just saying "Suspected robbery at bank". They need to explain the actual situation.

Yeah you'd especially think a bank teller would realize that making a big production out of withdrawing 12 grand is uncomfortable and unsafe. And given there was no obvious danger or threat from the guy, why not just call him into the manager's office or something? They could have ended up getting Ryan killed (edit - by the cops, who literally thought he was a bank robber)! I'm surprised he continues to bank there.

It’s common for that type of withdrawal from an actual bank…. A bank teller will often give that amount out in cash to someone on a weekly basis. How often do they get a note? And you find nothing suspicious about him giving a note to the teller instead of explaining it quietly? Surely a bank teller would never suspect something when they’re given a note which is common amongst bank robberies.

@@c0nc3ntr8d6 Because announcing to everyone in the bank that you're walking out with 12 grand is a bad idea! And whispering? Are you kidding? My bank of America branch lobby is extremely quiet. Everyone would hear. This isn't a difficult concept to grasp. He wanted to discreetly withdraw 12k. Meaning, NOT say out loud to everyone in the bank that he was withdrawing 12k. No, there's absolutely nothing suspicious about not wanting everyone in the bank to know you're withdrawing a huge sum of money. It's not about how much money the bank hands out per week, it's about not getting robbed by a bank customer on the way out the door or on the way home. He didn't have a weapon. The note not only wasn't threatening but it was clear what he wanted and why. And he showed ID and entered his PIN. This never should have happened.

@First Last I strongly disagree with the characterisation "sketchy as hell". There are myriad legitimate reasons to communicate with written notes. The teller has watched too many action movies, but the true fault lies with the manager who failed to follow-up with ID verification and instead told her to call the police if she's "uncomfortable" with the situation. I can't imagine a bank calling police over such an innocuous interaction here in Australia. They would likely get fined for misuse of emergency services. A magistrate may even force them to pay remediation to the affected (detained) parties.

There might be specific reasons to refuse a withdrawal (lacking funds, account blocked by court order etc.) but failing to check the ID and calling the police amounts to "swatting" - this call could have ended up in getting someone killed. That's an F for the bank.

@@Clark3218 Depends. When I did my professional training > 30 years ago, the change of bank branch security was in full swing in Germany. The armoured glass cabins for cashiers went, and automated systems were launched. All deposits were counted and inserted into an armoured box that couldn't be opened before the bank closed and withdrawals were restricted - so robbing a bank wouldn't yield much quickly even if you threatened to machine-gun everybody. You either looked for a softer target elsewhere or you had to take hostages to have the big safe opened which would be an hourslong process. In the case described here, the movie director would have known that large amounts of cash aren't available instantaneously - and to make a phone call to his branch a few hours before and ask to prepare a large withdrawal and the cashiers would have known to expect him.

I don't think she was at fault at all. If anything the manager should have come forward and confirmed everything and could have seen everything was fine. During the 911 call the the lady on the other side said he might just want to be discreet, but officers are on their way. However the officers did not seem to have all the information when they came on site. Leads me to believe that the officers were dispatched and not having all the details. Perhaps the 911 dispatcher could've asked more questions to confirm something was going on. I feel all the information was there to prove there was nothing wrong. So police would not have needed to be dispatched at all.

I think that the operator appeared to act appropriately. However, she should have asked the teller to verify his ID. That should have ended the call. The issue, as was stated in the video is what the officers were told. If they were told that a robbery might be occuring, they acted appropriately. BUT, there is a serious problem with the gross miscommunication. You could tell from the immediate "copslaining" that once they got him in the squad car, they knew this was a complaint. If the call was thoroughly and accurately relayed to the officers, then this was a travesty.

I am appalled and disappointed that there was no discussion addressing the fact that the person who made the 911 call that was played in the episode clearly misled the 911 operator as when she read the note, she did not read exactly what was on it. Based on the events as described, there is no question that by failing to accurately describe to the 911 operator, the caller is liable/at fault, and perhaps guilty of a false 911 call. If she had done her job and (1) properly verified ID, and (2) accurately and professionally involved her superior, the customer would not have been violated. It would seem that the events as documented constitute sufficient cause for action against the bank and the teller. I would not have been as generous as this customer was.

The bank tellers lack of information + body language put her superior into alert (which is their job). So of course the manager is going to react accordingly, that could be life or death. HOWEVER, I do think the manager should have told the girl to stay in her office and then went herself. I think she would have done the proper checks and found there was no reason for alarm. She could have also had the police called, asked the girl clarifying questions, and hopefully caught the inconsistences. From there she could have called dispatch with an update that would have at least lowered the priority of the call. However, that all depends on the reaction of the woman to her superior. As a bank manager, I've dealt with countless people that used notes for reasons other than robbery. I've also worked with celebrities that wanted to keep a low profile, and also worked with people who were withdrawing large sums of money, and didn't want to voice that out loud. While the officer suggested that Mr. Coogler ask for a manager next time, that really falls on the bank to offer up the privacy, ESPECIALLY with the dollar amount in question. The manager's role should have simply been to have Mr. Coogler remove his hat and sunglasses, per bank policy, make the visual ID, then offer up to conclude the transaction in their office, for additional privacy. Banks should count out the withdrawal in front of a customer, so that might agitate someone who is asking for discretion. The bottom line is that, aside from the hat and sunglasses, this is a 'by the book' withdrawal, that was very poorly handled by the manager, in my opinion.

Having him sit there in cuffs why they "copsplain him" to him is frustrating. He should never have been cuffed, but, once cuffed, when he was cleared, all expediency to release the detention should be made.

Yeah at 7:05 you can feel Ryan's anger at this as he asks him to skip the copsplanation while he's cuffed. So politely too, way more politely than they deserved.

I agree. The gentleman had every right to just say, "Lawyer," while the handcuffs were on (I understand, of course, that it wouldn't be easy to invoke your rights when police surround you) . And the copsplaining afterward, especially the unwarranted "Calm down,"" from the supervising officer, is just the police covering for not seeking explanation from the bank personnel in the first place. Usually, I agree with this channel's grades for officers. I guess, since they didn't rough the victim up....So, as we used to say in pickup basketball, "No blood? No foul."

Exactly - skipping past putting him in cuffs, and keeping him in cuffs after the frisk (did the LEOs really think he was a risk to their safety?), they should have removed the cuffs and made it clear the detention was over the moment they verified his ID - past this point, they no longer have RS, extending the detention is illegal. Unless you believe all of the LEOs simply forgot, it was an act of intimidation.

I've worked at a bank and had this exact thing happen. I never once even thought of calling the police. The note initially got my blood pressure up but seeing the word "withdrawal" and seeing the correct ID, verified info and signature etc immediately eased my nerves. I had him sit in the conference room for privacy. At that point I just asked the guy the reason for the w/d, informed him due to the amount we do more paperwork and asked those questions, and he told me everything i needed, and let him know about our time lock and time frame while we get those funds. 15 minutes later, met him in the conference room and counted it back and this guy got over 20k. I don't get this at all. In the conference room he explained too that the reason for the note was due to the fact he's had bad experiences with people in our area (known crime area) and it was 0 issue. The only time it may be suspicious is due to possible forced w/d but even then we always have our manager speak to them too to make sure they're comfortable and safe and if we suspect anything we call our fraud department to have a conversation. We rarely ever jump to calling police first, even for fraudsters caught red handed. This is bs and this teller needs new training.

I had experience with this from the customer side of it. Was withdrawing 15k to buy a car (seller wanted cash). Handed the teller a deposit slip with my withdrawal amount on it and my ID. She scurried off for a minute, came back and gave me my ID back and asked me to go wait in an office and the loan officer would be with me in a moment. I was a little confused because I wasn't there for a loan but said whatever and went and sat in the office. Few minutes later the manager came in, asked a few questions about why I was withdrawing the money, then went off again and came back with the money. On the way out he said something about "glad we could get this loan taken care of for you" as I left. They got it. They got that the reason I used a note was concerns over others in the bank knowing I was asking for that much cash, and reacted in a way to completely dispel it. That being said, not every bank is so mindful of things like that. The bank I was at before that one I once got in an argument with a teller in the drive up over a deposit slip. They didn't have one in the little canister thing so I sent it in and requested one, she argued with me that I could just tell her my account info over the speaker. That was the last day I banked there.

Having previously worked for that bank I can tell the teller didn’t do their job properly. People come in and ask for large withdrawals discreetly all the time because they obviously don’t want the whole bank knowing they’re carrying large amounts of money to the parking lot where they could get jumped. Also the bank teller literally has all the information available to her if she was still uncertain it was really his account (even though he provided ID and literally knew the pin to his card) she could have asked questions about the account in general to verify him as the owner such as recent purchases made or even have him sign in on mobile banking on the phone to verify. Calling the police was definitely out of line and not warranted at all.

A CUSTOMER that has zero clue how the bank works. They had EVERY reason to have viable suspicion. The teller did her job as trained. The manager made a valid call. The man was not able to have positive ID verification given the cap, the mask, AND the sunglasses. He refused to directly answer questions and ordered the teller to "read the note". People try to commit fraud using others' IDs, ATM cards and PINs every day... People should be happy the teller did her actual job and didn't just give 12K to someone being shady, refusing to answer questions and wasn't able to be positively identified. How would you feel if someone did this, pretending to be YOU, and the teller just did it? You also get angry when they ask for ID? People love acting like God when they go to the bank and demanding they don't need to show ID, FOR BANK TRANSACTIONS! Like...they ask for YOUR security as a member...They ID you for security purposes that protect the member! if you don't want your accounts safe, then take your money home and put it under your bed. I'm sure it'll be safe there... The teller followed procedure. The manager was justified. DON'T BE SHADY AT THE BANK!
