It’s funny because now cpd acts like they don’t care and are retiring. They hate the mayor we have because she holds them accountable to the highest extent. And Illinois just passed the bill that you can’t search the car because of a “weed smell”. It was getting so bad with officers using that as an excuse, they ended up just passing that bill.

I want to fully agree with you, but i still hope that one of these days ill rightfully be accused of a crime but get off because of the cop not showing up. I hear a story of one guy getting a ticket. He looked up his officer on social media, found out the day his wife was due to give birth, and changed his court date to it. Cop didn't show and he got off scott free 😂 So maybe have that as a requested opption and not a default penalty for a no show cop.

You're suggesting that the officer didn't show up because he/she has something to hide? I guess that's possible, but I'm thinking that this is a minor seat-belt citation, and it is not uncommon for law enforcement not to show up for such minor violations when there might be other priorities. Therefore, if you have the time and it's not too inconvenient you should always contest a minor infraction - there's a good likelihood the officer will not show up.

This was a single ticket. In Cook County even the alleged violator isn't required to attend. They can mail in the fine. If the cop did attend, this ticket would not have been dismissed, and he would have lost so it is often actually an overwhelming advantage to the person who feels they were wrongly ticketed for the cop to not show up to traffic court when a ticket is disputed.

A black lieutenant in an unmarked cruiser would pull me over every time he saw me, saying I matched the description of a suspect until finally I had enough and said,"You have a description of a white guy with a mohawk wearing a purple Eeyore hoodie? one way to hold cops accountable is that when they do not show up in court, they either automatically get billed lawyer’s fees and court costs for their victim that did show up in court and have it come out of their own pocket. or a bench warrant is issued for them ordering them to show up and explain themselves to the judge, while having their actions during the stop reviewed by the judge and when necessary fine for failure to perform their duty.

Just another 'tool' police use... subtle intimidation. I was pulled over one time, and three cops tried something similar. I was driving home one night and was pulled over for some supposed violation (making an illegal turn). It was around midnight and I had just left an anonymous meeting. One cop turned into three within a few minutes. After being asked to exit the vehicle in order to perform a roadside sobriety test (which I PASSED) officers started questioning me. At first it was the normal... driver's license, insurance card, registration... blah blah blah... which I handed over. At one point they asked to search my car... which I refused to give consent to. They then started questioning why I was out at midnight, where I was going... ALL the while slowly entering my 'personal space'. When they didn't wait for any answers and just keep asking over and over... I knew what they were doing and allowed it... in fact I encouraged it. After all I know my rights (to a point), and I knew these cops were trying to 'fluster me' into giving into their 'request' to search my car.... with the intention of find something illegal to use against me (drugs, booze, weapons... etc.). Well... me being a young gay man... I HAD to let them know I was enjoying being SO close to so many beautiful well built officers (I sort of lied). I even mentioned (I sort of lied again... kind of) that I had a little fetish... that I dream of an encounter like this.. big strapping men in uniform... with handcuffs AND the feel (I made the motion to touch one of their leather jackets but stopped)... and smell of leather... ohhhhh. I purposefully relaxed my posture, and thought about all the 'body language' cues I had learned over the years... especially those cues that said I was flirting. I NEVER propositioned any of them... but I did make it clear that I was enjoying their close proximity... and FAR from making me uncomfortable... it was getting me hot. Well...LOL... at this point I saw the realization pass over one of the officer's face... it was PRICELESS. A quick conversation ensued between the three of them...and VERY quickly these three officers were trying to INCREASE the distance between us... one actually extended his arm in the classic 'stop' motion when I tried to step up closer. A minute later i was told I was free to go... with no ticket... and no apology... just a clipped 'Drive safe'... and it was over. I will NEVER forget the look of realization that swept across the cop's face when it happened. It was a two-fold look... first was the realization that i was gay, and enjoying the encounter... and then the second look... was the look of defeat when he realized I had won the 'intimidation game'. PS- He was the officer who said... Drive safe.

Personally, I feel that if a police officer is willing to go through the trouble and time to pull someone over, detain a person, search their vehicle, and then not show up to court, that officer should be held accountable. His last comments said it all. “They are narc cops, they don’t pull people over for seatbelts.” “The pulled me over because I am a white man in a black neighborhood.” This is EXACTLY what these fishing expeditions are all about. To quote my cop friends “We are like sharks, constantly circling, lokking for a reason to pull people over.”

Cops are never your friend even if you didn't do anything wrong. They will attempt to bend the situation to fit there naritive in any way. Hell I have had a officer even refuse to write a report after a neighbor hit my friends car with a mini bike. The officer didn't do nothing other then tell us to go through insurance and insurance refused to do anything because a lack of a report and the neighbors insurance was expired at the same time.

Not only that. But I‘m always baffled how often officer‘s safety is put above civilians safety. How often have we heard of harm done to innocent civilians because cops thought they might be in danger and couldn‘t safely afford to wait and make sure that they‘re in danger. This is 100% the wrong way around! As a cop, you‘ve signed up to be exposed to some danger. As a citizen, you don‘t. Therefore the law should not excuse the cops taking actions that can increase the risk for innocent citizens, just to decrease the risk for the cop.

The typical thought among law enforcement is, "Because I can" and "Who's gonna stop me?" Bottom line is, too many bad, power-tripping cops have ruined it for the (very) few good cops. Which is a shame.

and i have to add that the "good" cops have a very bad track record of sticking with the bad ones instead of calling them out. they'll never say "yeah he was well out of line there" it's all "we'll see how the investigation goes", or "it's a hard job and i'm not going to second guess because i wasn't there", or some other excuse.

I knew a kid in kern county who leaned forward in the passenger seat while police drew their fire arms on them out of instinct to avoid being shot and was then fired upon by seven officers who dumped their entire clips on him. He was 14, and they found no weapons. I think it was just a speeding stop and his brother, who was driving, survived.

Yeah I think all police academies should start with a long thorough lecture on civil rights and the Constitution. Then they need a break to discuss what they learned and the instructors need to ask each of them, individually "do you really wanna be a cop?" Unfortunately even if the academy trains them right the first thing any T.O. does on the street is say "forget everything you learned at the academy". Which is a bigger issue I can't fix.

4:20 tells us everything we need to know. She couldn’t even say back what the 4th amendment law is. Police should be absolutely required to know all the amendment’s and constitutional rights like the back of their hand and should be tested on those rights and laws at least every few months. That would save a lot of Lives and eliminate a lot of BS from these officers in this country.

As AtA mentioned, the Supreme Court has made so many exceptions to the Bill of Rights, particularly to the 4th Amendment, that knowing what the Amendments are doesn't really matter anymore. And since the cops are legally allowed to lie to you, they are perfectly within their rights to tell you anything they like about the laws. Unless you actually know what the laws are (I would estimate at least 95% percent of US Citizens don't, and that includes the cops) they might be able to use those lies to get you to admit to things you shouldn't.

There was a notorious incident where a railroad worker was pulled over for dubious reasons, was polite and complied with the officer, but was still treated like shit by the officer, who decided to manhandle and cuff the guy for "getting too close" (when in reality, the officer was WAAAAY up in the dude's face). The officer then lectured the railroad worker like a child and refused to uncuff the guy until he agreed with the officer's delusional version of events. When the railroad worker went with his wife to the station to file a complaint, not only did they refuse to show them the body cam footage, but the police chief spoke privately to the wife and convinced her that her husband was at fault. The chief also wrote up a new citation in retaliation. As you said, the body cam footage wouldn't go public until much later after a major lawsuit. By that point, the railroad worker and his wife had already divorced, allegedly due to this incident.
