Haha, I love Larson's bakery!!! My mom and grandma take me there every year around Christmas and we drive around Ballard looking at Christmas lights and my mom tells me all the stories about when she was a kid. And we drive by the house she grew up in. It's so fun to here all of the stories!

My grandparents met in Ballard at a Swedish picnic in 1915. They had both immigrated from Sweden, but met there. My grandfather was coming back from the Alaskan Gold rush.

I lived on a Coast Guard cutter on Lake Union on the other side from Ballard for a year. All I remember of Ballard was hitting the record store and the hobby store. Never noticed the old Norwegians, though.

Ballard still definitely thinks of itself as its own city, too--my roommate's mom lives there, and it's...a lot like the sketch, scarily. XD

Ballard used to be a city a long time ago, but it's deep inside Seattle now. My mom grew up in Ballard, this video is hilarious XD

For all the jokes here, Ballard has been absorbed by The Borg and is now an endless row of identical overpriced condos.

Ballard was it's own city that was annexed in to Seattle around the turn of the 20th century... but yeah, it's all been absorbed by the Borg & the nouveau riche technocrat transplants who love dry weather & sunshine & drive way too fast in mid-level import cars

Sadly, I think that's because a lot of the old Scandinavian folks have died. My Norwegian aunt and uncle are in their mid-80s and still live there, and they said a lot of their community is gone.

Actually you would have to go up to Larson's from downtown Ballard, not "down" as Bill Nye states.

Most of the folks that grew up here in Ballard in the 60/70s had bigger dreams than living in a matchbox size two bdrrm bungalow, which if it had a garage was barely big enough for a VW Bug. Drug running 1970's fisherman may sound nostalgic now but if you are thinking about raising a family it makes the suburbs sound pretty good. Makes a nice suburban home sound pretty good...

Uff da, that's funny. Does Ballard still have their 17th of May parade? (For those of you who weren't raised on lutefiske, that's Norwegian Independence Day.)

You can diss the yuppies and professionals all you want, but my experience is the kids of the "old people, scandinavians, locals, blue collar people, funny accents, lack of pretentiousness" couldn't wait to move out to the suburbs and they mostly did. Some of the kids remain - and they share the same culture as the "yuppies, californians, immigrants, tech workers, bay area accents, tremendous shallow pretentiousness".

OMG now that I've stopped laughing for a moment let me just tell everyone this is REALLY (kinda-sorta)how Ballard is! I know, cuz I spent nearly 30 years there and for those that don't know, you really do have to have a passport when you cross the Ballard Bridge ;)

Ballard is not a city, it's a neighborhood in Seattle, it always has been. You are obviously not from Seattle.
@Somnivore76 жыл бұрын
you obviously missed the "free ballard" era. Ballardites think its its own city.
@curtismartin28666 жыл бұрын
No, like many of our neighborhoods, it was it's own city. This video makes me smile because at this time, my Dad actually was a cop in Ballard.
