Coraline 2 is looking like it’ll never happen, so… Since 2015, I’ve analyzed the Coraline movie, making it more interesting, explaining ALL secrets and mysteries, or questions possible! A grand theory longer than the full movie… The song and soundtrack mystery, the ending, the button eyes and doll theories are simple, the Other Mother has been demystified, the Coraline book has been tied-to, all of the characters have been completely dissected, Wybie, the Beldam, the Cat, the trailer, the pink palace, behind the scenes, ALL of it. So this is the accumulation of my thirteen, EXTREMELY detailed videos. A compilation, for those who’d rather watch my analytical escapades like a literal MOVIE. Enjoy!

I didn't come up with this, but I think it's likely that the Beldam didn't fall down the well- she was drowned in it in the 17th century for being a "witch". Also, in the book, it describes her hair as "wet looking".
@storm_5088
@storm_5088 4 жыл бұрын
AriaKK 123 I actually think that too. Witches would usually be tied to chairs and drowned, or burned. Either way I do think that the Beldam was a witch and was caught, and was tied to a chair and drowned in that very well. Here’s another thing, at the beginning of the movie when she’s making Coraline’s doll, and pushes it out the window, we see stars. Remember when Wybie says that if you were to go down the well you’d see a sky full of stars? Obviously that’s mentioned in the video that the well could possibly be another entry point, whereas that’s were the Beldam died and became who she is.

Fun fact in the beginning, when she is making the mini coraline doll, the tools in her "sewing kit" aren't sewing tools they're 1800th century embalming tools (for deceased people being prepared for their own funeral) she has a bone saw in her kit and in the embalming process your clothes are cut down your back, then your mouth is filled with cotton or saw dust (which has been used since the mummies of ancient Egypt) to soak up the fluids from seeping out of you once you've passed then she sews the mouth shut which when you die your eye and mouth muscles relax therfore they need to be sewn shut this is horrifying because this is foreshadowing that she's hoping for coralines death and is basically preparing coraline for her own funeral but yeah I did a little research for this and I thought it was a good point and kinda creepy

“The triangle rock” is called an adder stone. Rocks that had naturally formed holes in the middle were thought to contain magic in Celtic lore. Coraline’s adder stone is also made of a rock called malachite thats magical properties are protection, and symbolizing the afterlife and death. All of that makes sense to its role in the story.

@@wolframshibuya2693Ooo- That would add more credibility to what someone else said here- That in the book the Beldam's hair was described as 'wet.' And it was common practice to drown witches in wells back then. If the Beldam was a witch, it might explain a lot of the weord stuff she supposedly did before her death like pushing her mother back in the grave repeatedly. There's a lot of nods to faries too, as AbitFrank has pointed out in her videos. The fairy ring Coraline steps in around the well in the beginning, as well as fairy fog. The thick mist the covers everything outside of the house until Coraline manages to 'win.' Mind you these faries are specifically based off Celtic folklore so I'd look more in to that if youre interested.

An important difference in the book and movie is that the movie takes place in the United States, while the book is in the United Kingdom. Native American folklore actually has a number of spider-woman fusion beings, so we can explain her origin in those stories, whereas in the British version, we can assume she’s a type of fairy. Fairies in old British culture were not happy tinkerbell types, they were often animalistic, aggressive, and cruel.

ok i know this video is like four years old but here’s my theory on her finger tapping: this might make no sense or be a stretch but whatev the beldam only reveals her true form to coraline when she becomes angry. now why would she reveal that she’s a monster to the child she’s trying to trap? she obviously knows that her true form would scare coraline since she puts on the facade of her own mother. a child is not going to want to stay with a literal monster. which is why i believe that her revealing herself was an accident. it is often extremely difficult to contain yourself or think clearly when you are angry. keeping some kind of facade is also very difficult when feeling such a strong emotion. now finger tapping (like the beldam does) is more often than not, a sign of frustration or anger but one that usually happens when someone is trying to keep themselves together. i think the beldam has a short temper and patience but knows if she becomes angry, she’ll just reveal herself which is why she has that habit of tapping her fingers as a strategy and reminder to keep herself calm

For the questions were the parents really taken i have this to say: the mist is pretty much everywhere in the first half of the movie in the books its heavily implied that it is it's own entity. It slowly approaches towards the hous until it starts to rain and coraline can not go outside and if you look at the window its windy outdoors but the mist is still there like it wanted her to stay inside and find the door. When the cat guides coraline to the edge of the other world the book described the emptiness of the place as a sort of mist. When coraline and her mother go out to buy the uniformes the mist surrounds the shop and is also there when her mother goes out to buy groceries and doesn't come back. My opinion is that the mist took the parents . In the books coraline takes place in England and in English folklore mist is used by faries to trap you in there world. I think the mist works a bite like the coraline doll and it is used by the other mother to make her see what the other mother wants to see. At the end of the movie the mist is totaly gone.

idk about the book much, but in regards to the movie: I always thought that the reason Coraline and her family were allowed to move into the house is because she was almost 'destined' to. The beginning sequence has the Other Mother dismantling the doll made in the image of Mrs. Lovat's sister, turning her into Coraline. Later on, when Wybie gives this doll to Coraline, he says it's OLD - says that he found it in his grandma's chest, and its older/as old as she is... What if, after Mrs. Lovat's sister disappeared, Mrs. Lovat found the doll her sister had but it was different now: looking like a girl with blue hair, in a yellow rain coat. YEARS later, a family wants to move into the Pink Palace, and behold! A girl that looks exactly like the doll. Thus she makes an exception to her 'no kids' rule and allows Coraline's family to move in because she hopes it would help her either find or free her sister somehow... just a thought.

I don't see how Mrs. Lovat would think the Coraline version of the doll was the same as her sister's. Like they look very different, theyre even stuffed with different material, she'd probably think it was a different doll, not the same one. Maybe she thought her sister had another doll that she didn't know about and kept it as a momento. But I don't see how she would be able to tell it was the same one unless she knew it was changed. And for that to happen, she'd have to have seen it happen before or see Beldam changing it.

Got to think aswell she wants souls, not physical bodies of the children so there's a possibility that those tools had a purpose to either embalm the physical bodies (which wouldn't make sense to to persevere a body if she only feeds off the souls) or uses them for easier to discard the bodies although im 50/50 on that theory. But of course we have to think there's a probably high reason why she's in possession of embalming tools and are in a kit prepared for use. Yes she uses them for the dolls but it's something to think about. Also they are and 1800s style of embalming tools (mid to late 1800s if I'm correct) which could also tell us the time of her death because I do believe she is indeed dead physically and not spiritually as why else would she not live in the real world,can shape shift and lived for a long period of time and also why she needs to feed off the souls of children, so indeed she is dead physically not spiritually(some sort of evil spirit the D word I'll not say it but catch my drift). Also a theory that sticks out, why does she only feeds off the souls of children? Children are known in ancient history to be used for sacrifices as they have a 'purity' because of their innocence. It's also said that evil spirits (D word) are more likely to attack children because it hurts God as they are truly innocent beings.

I just realized something, when the beldam sits next to Coraline`s bed , she fades into a doll , nothing new there but notice how the chair also changes. In the real word Coraline`s chair has a daisy on it, in welsh the daisy is called `llygaid y dydd` which also translates to `eyes of the day`, the doll is the beldam`s eyes during the day. Nice way the film uses symbolism.

At 4:24. I just noticed that the Pink Palace is on a mound. If this house was founded along with the town of Ashland, OR, in the 1850s or so, could it be that the Bedlam set up her house on an ancient Indian burial ground? Remember that the white settlers were not kind to the natives--they slaughtered them off and then drove them off their lands. So I can imagine the original tribe of the Ashland region being really pissed off. Thus one of their shamans cursed an ancient cemetery of theirs, and possibly the well too. And then this woman ended up building her large, fancy house on that ancient cemetery next to this well. Then--bam!--she got cursed to become the Bedlam or a spider-woman who needed to eat children's souls/flesh to remain immortal. This was a curse from the pissed-off Native Americans. Just a thought.

I saw somewhere that the grandma let Coraline move in because Wybie was the same age her sister was when she died. I bet that the grandma tried to investigate what happened to her twin. (Twins often tell each other almost everything. Maybe the sister tried telling the grandma about the other world but she didn’t believe her. After she disappeared, she realized the truth.) The grandma feared that Wybie would be next, so she let Coraline move in as a sacrifice to protect her grandson.

Of course she doesn't care about Coraline until the end almost. She's pissed because Wybie stole the doll that looked like Coraline and knew she was in a massive amount of trouble. She knew if she got the doll back the Beldam can no longer spy on Coraline no more and have no more power. Remember before Coraline had the doll the door was brick? She used her soul to keep her world going, she needed the doll in the house because like a voodoo doll it holds magic and since the Coraline doll is full of Soul dust it allows her to cast magic within the house. Wybies grandma probably only knew how to fight the Beldam by taking the doll back. Probably because Wybies grandma lost her sister when she was a kid and she the doll disappear after the Beldam had her. So, his grandma probably thought no more doll = no more magic.

I think the beldam once lived in the real world as a person, and the pink palace was once a farm or something. Hundreds of years ago. She practiced witch craft because she was obsessed with magic, then when she got older, she had a child and loved playing games with it etc. Until one day it disappeared. She felt so upset she soad buttons on her eyes as part of some kind of ritual to open up another world. People around the town found her suspicious and burnt her on a stack so her soul got trapped in the other world, and continued to look for children to get ride of her suffering of her lost child.

I think that the cat truly is a guardian against the Beldam and that’s why she hates him so much. I do however believe that the cat himself follows “rules” of both worlds so that he can go between both worlds. Like he can’t interfere by stating bluntly that the other mother is a witch but can help guide coralline into figuring it out herself, all while protecting her. For this reason he ate the rat that was sounding An alarm and gave her the eye of the last ghost child.

YES. Also, the ghost children and cat seem to be in agreement with how she disposes the hand and key. I don't understand why everyone says it "irresponsible" I don't believe the well and the portal are related. If anything it's probably the other mother's greatest foe because it's full of water (spiders can't swim) and has slippery walls therefore preventing the hand from ever getting out.

Bunnny 131 for me i take that scene as because coraline wasn’t where she was suppose to be (where the other mother could make the room) it just looped back after a short time bc she doesn’t have all the magic. the rats tried to warn her b if i remeber correctly the cat kills it....not vernan. So why would the other world (the other cat) he’ll coraline, is this just a bigger game to suck the belldame dry?

Also, adding to the above replies (although you made some good points), the well being a portal to the real world is classed as a threat to the Other Mother, a way for Coraline to get back to the real world, out of arms reach of the Beldam. She would’ve have created the portal there, only the one in the house, since she is always in it.

One of my possible theories is Coraline's parents got into some kind of accident in the new home. The "real" father looks so dead to me, and the "real" mother looks fine, but wears a neck brace. How did the real mother know what key out of all the keys went to the portal door that Coraline was curious about? I wonder if the parents found the portal while Coraline was outside wandering around... Bc the real father always looks dead and both mothers look fine. Take for example whenever Coraline is in the other world the father is always trying to tell Coraline something, but the hands always cover his mouth. Also when Coraline was trying to escape the garden the other father was trying to save her saying "I don't wanna hurt you" and he looked dead again. What if the real parents were never there after Coraline went back inside and the other mother was using her magic to make her parents seem to be there. That's why the food looks nasty at first, and why Coraline found the rotting bag of food when her parents went missing.

What's even more interesting about your theory on the cat being an escaped victim, is that in the book, the ghost boy tells Coraline that the other mother is furious with her, that "She hasn't had anything escape for a long time" or something along those lines. Specifically though, he says "for a long time" meaning someone DID escape, in the past before the ghost children... perhaps the missing date, and the cat. Another bit of strong evidence that the beldam got the key, when you say the cat could only have used the portal entrance if the world and the other mother were still active, it's true. The book confirms this. Right before the climax after Coraline gets the third soul, and the world is collapsing, Coraline urges the cat to get out, that she'll see it again when she leaves, but the cat panics, saying "they're all gone. All the exits just went flat", and that's when she takes the cat inside with her. meaning if the world is in jeopardy, every single portal in and out collapses, aside from the door which is in the house. If they remain open... the world is stable. Another interesting thing about your theory that the rooms only "render", so to speak, as needed, is that in the book, Coraline has that exact suspicion going into her room to search for the ghost souls, thinking that it would just be empty space until the exact moment she enters

Personally I think the Beldam is a faerie, specifically a changeling who was swapped with the original Beldam before she and fer people left Europe to settle in America. Her fae nature drew her to the well/the otherworld where she discovered her true nature. The reason she has her obsession with games, why her illusions were revealed by the hagstone and why she was so strictly bound by her deal with the hand thing is because things like that are considered part of fae lore.

The reason that Coraline and her family were able to move into the house, even though no kids were supposed to be allowed to move in, was because Wybie's grandmother knew about the Beldam. If you pay attention to the timeline, revealed by the dates of the taffy candy, you'll notice the beldam takes kids approximately once every 50 years. The grandma knew it was getting around that time, so in order to ensure that Wybie would not be the next victim, the grandmother let them move in. This can also explain why Wybie's grandmother had the Coraline doll the beldam made. I think the grandmother made a deal with the beldam.

the book implies the other mother was the original owner of the pink palace. she had a son who was lost so she searched all over the place. then she looks inside the well and accidentally trips inside. it was the passage to the other world, and there were fairies. the other mother locked and used the fairies' magic to sustain her life, corrupting and forgetting about her son, gaining other childrens' love and use it to feed herself from her hollow heart... the movie also has evidence of this, like the well having mushroom ring (representing sacred fairy place), and the picture of a blue eyed kid having ice cream with 17-18th century clothes being her lost son (when the pink palace was built). that painting didn't come with coraline so i think it stayed there for hundreds of years. it also seems the blue eyed black cat is a reincarnation of the blue eyed boy trying to stop his corrupted mother from killing children, which is sad. people think well is a passage to other world so coraline gave the key to the beldam. but the fairies removed the well's power to protect people from the beldam. i think the other world was just fairy's playground or something nice initially. the well in movie looks same as the tunnel coraline crawls in, just with lights off and horizontal. the ongoing insects metaphors the other world like a fly-trap where coraline is a dragonfly (her hair clip).

I looked it up so you don't have to Snapdragons possess two meanings. This is similar to the mythical creature they resemble, revered in some cultures and feared in others: A snapdragon means grace and, due to its growth in rocky areas, strength. However, it can also symbolize deviousness.

Do you think the tunnel between the real world and the other world was actually fuelled by Coraline’s soul? Because after being the the other world for a while Coraline begin to understand the illusion, and things become less magical making her soul become dimmer- along with that the tunnel begins getting less dim too it was bright and colourful the first time she walking in then began deteriorating
@wolvie1618
@wolvie1618 3 ай бұрын
I personally doubt it. It started fading the same time that the other world began to fade. It dimmed because Coraline's reluctance caused Beldam to push the enchantment for longer than normal, so she began to run out of magic to keep everything pretty. And I saw another youtuber, abitfrank, who did an even deeper dive into Coraline lore and she said the tunnel may be an entity in and of itself.

The theory that the boy in the painting is her child is super intriguing, on coraline’s last trip through the tunnel you can see a bunch of items of clothing (likely from the children she’s taken) There’s a pair of shoes which looks very similar to the shoes the grandmas sister wore, and also clothing that looks super similar to the outfit the little boy in the painting wears. But if that is the case, why isn’t he also with the other children’s trapped souls?? Maybe it’s because he wasn’t a child she trapped, but her own.

If you watch the rest of the video he changes his theory on that. She has no child, the sad boy is her first successful victim. His ghost and eyes are not there because he was completely consumed by the beldam and vermin (the demon that sometimes pisses the cat, when it talks)

I believe the triangle is a hag stone (witch stone, adder, stone, etc) Hag stones allow the possessor to look through the hole in order to see the unseen, such as other worlds and invisible creatures like the fae. Hag stones can also serve as protective amulets and assist with fertility. This makes sense as La Belle Dame sans Merci (Beautiful Lady without Mercy) is fae, although she enslaves a knight in the poem, not children. Still, there are lots of myths and legends regarding the fae stealing children.

Idk if i should say this, but here we go- When Coraline first meets her other parents, they give her a cake. It says " Welcome Home!" in cursive. The 'O' in 'home' has two loops and in graphology, putting two loops in a 'O' means that someone is lying. So basically, she is welcome, but she is not home. It's been quite a while, but I might have a short-term theory as for the reason in the film, the grandmother, might have let Coraline's family move in. If the grandmother, who's yet to know the truth as to why the children prior to her sister's disappearance, had a sense that the place wasn't safe for kids, surely if she did her 'research' she'd know it was young children. By the look and sort of 'voices' of the children we can take a guess that they are between the ages of 4-7, or at the most 9. Young. Coraline was likely let in due to her age, 11. Eleven year olds are intelligent, independent, and strong enough to defend themselves. Or at the least, put up a fight. And, no children of eleven were captured. (Size differences as well) All the grandmother knows is that young children often go missing. Not older children. If she was so worried and protective of Wyborne she probably wouldn't let him go out on his own to explore.

Listening through this from start to finish has me thinking: What if this was a part of Vermins plan? He was always flip floppy towards Coraline through the whole movie. He helped her sometimes, and then turned on her other times. If we follow your theory on him being the other world, and being the same soul possessing the other cat to get close to Coraline, then this takes on another meaning. If the beldam was trying to keep the kids from ended up being like her, and she's only killed and kept three kids to keep herself alive, what if Vermin got tired of her? She wasn't doing enough for him, or that she was keeping him back. So what if he helped Coraline to try and get the old beldam out of the way and get a newer, younger beldam, one that doesn't have many, if any friends. One that isn't too keen on kids, one that is young enough that he can manipulate into doing his work for years to come. He smiled when she threw the key down the well because that sealed not only the beldam's fate, but her own. In that moment, he won the long game he's been playing. The game he was always going to win. Either with a new soul, or a new beldam. Vermin was always going to win. But that's just a theory.

It's not that Coraline never escaped, the thing is that the "real" world and the "other" world are the same place, the beldam wants her soul so she is trying to drag her into hell, the disappearance of her parents is maybe a metaphorical way of saying that Coraline was fighting something alone to get her parents back something like an addiction

I believe there’s another cat, an evil cat, pretending to be the black cat. The fake one follows Coraline around and thats why the other mother knew everything about her even without the doll around her. Maybe the other mother is controlled, as this video says, maybe controlled by the fake cat? That might also explain why in the title/picture instead of the protagonist or antagonist being there, the cat is there. Well....maybe the antagonist IS there and the antagonist actually is the cat. Honestly I’m probably repeating what he said but I kinda zoned out so I didn’t hear it. Anyway it’s a nice to know how much effort and hints the creators dropped whilst creating the movie.

I seen a comment say "my thing about the grandma is that she went with her sister the first time, but was scared and tried to stop her sister because she met the cat there who warned her like Coraline. grandma tried to convince her sister but failed, and her sister was taken. years later, the cat is reborn and comes back to the grandmother to convince her that this child can end the monster, free her sister, and end the cycle." I actually think this could be a possibility. Due to the fact of her being absolutely paranoid and always calling Wybie and wondering where he is because she knows about the Beldam and knows that her sister was with the Beldam and never returned, so as a young child she just assumed her sister was never going to return and so she would have to put all the blame on "the other mother". With the whole Coraline thing i dont think that she knew Coraline would be a hero type figure, I believe that she realized that Wybie was around the age she was when her sister had been lured and taken away from her and she couldn't let the Beldam take not one but two people out of her life. So, the Grandma thought that if she let a family with a child move into the Pink Palace, maybe her grandson would be spared from being taken like her sister once had. Also, even if the Grandma never knew about the Beldam maybe she caught on to the fact that her sister went missing in the house and she maybe did some digging and found that more than once has a child went missing in the house so maybe she never let people with children move in to spare the parents the grief of losing their child like she had lost her sister, and well if you ask "well if she didn't know about the beldam wanting just children then why let anyone move in?" maybe if she did some digging and realized that ONLY children were going missing, maybe she thought that adults were safe to live there. Thus, her reason to only having people with no children live there. I have so many theories about coraline and I think your videos just get my brain going and jumping to so many ideas. I wish they would make a movie on why the Beldam is the way she is and how it all connects together and just to give some rest to all the theories. I just want to know if my thoughts and theories on this film are true because I have always been fascinated by this movie since I was little. You making these videos give me lots of joy.

Super random thought while watching: maybe there's only one key because the door wasn't in the house and she used her own soul to make it. While love souls are potent they just aren't as strong as your own soul? So she could only make one door and one key. She also has button eyes and that means she removed her soul at some point.

Hear me out, I haven't watched the whole video yet but listen to this; Theory is the cat is the other mother's son who's the boy in the picture. What if the kid fell into the well first then his cries attracted his mother who then went into the well trying to save her kid thus they both get trapped in the other world. They try to figure things out but then the kid starts to give in to his injuries because he did fall. Then the other mother hears a voice telling her to use her eye to save her boy. The voice is of her older daughter back up at the well who figured everything out. She then rips out her whole eye to save his boy but can't sustain the boy's body so she turns him into a cat instead. and seeing the power of one eye she realizes she can create a whole other world with her second one and does so, but then her body starts giving up on her because she has no soul anymore. so then she starts luring kids and stealing their eyes to sustain herself. But it's not enough so she continues and steals lures two more kids. But when it comes to Coraline the cat/beldam's son helps her because they're related and he actually has some empathy. But the time that he hesitated to help Coraline with the key was because he didn't want her mom to die. The other mother hates the cat simply because it's been so long she forgot who he is. And the cat only pretends to hate the beldam to seem like he's on coraline's side. And the cat can't talk in the real world because one eye was only enough to craft him a new body not a voice in the outside world, but in the real world with the help of the magic from the souls he's able to speak.

Theres also a theory that grandma made a deal with Coralines parents. It’s kinda dark but seeing how uninterested and annoyed They were at their young child talking to them, my ears are open.

I would believe this theory if one factor didn’t stand. Why did Wybie’s grandmother hide the doll? Wybie said he found the doll in his grandmothers trunk if the grandmother really wanted Coraline to be the next victim why hide the doll then?. Wybie even admitted he stole the doll so his grandmother had no idea it was gone my thinking is that his grandma in order to protect Coraline from the same fate as the other children when she found the doll hid it so the Belldam had no way of seeing what Coraline was doing effectively putting a wrench in the Belldam’s plans and saving Coraline from the same fate as her sister, but of course as fate would have it Wybie found the doll and being naive gave it to Coraline. I think that’s why she let the Jones into the pink palace thinking she got rid of the factor that would put Coraline in danger she thought it would be safe for her to be there.

ok i think for the mother “morphing” i don’t think she can do that, based on the book, it says coralline realized how ugly and not like her mother she actually looked, meaning i think she was blinded by magic and love until the love was ending and she was getting sick of it and then she saw what the beldam really looked like. I think in the movie we see her “morphing” but it’s really just coralline just realizing how ugly she actually is and when we saw her looking like her real mother was just what coralline saw at that time

Why don't you try to contact the author of Coraline, Neil Gaiman. You could tweet your theories at him and make an interview like video if he'd want that. Might be worth a try

I wouldn't want to do that, if i were the theorizer and contacted the author, imagine how crushed the theorizer would be if the author just said "yeah none of that happened, its just a book and a movie, everything you thought about this book and all your theories, are wrong..." I would die if i put that much effort and thought into something just for it to be stomped on

@@PinkiethePandaim sure he was well aware that all his theories could possibly be debunked one day by authors/directors/ect when he started this channel also let's imagine Neil says "no the theories you worked on are false BUT the Beldame is X creature" or any other kind of info that he could base a new theory on. Sure, his original theory might be debunked this not just give him a lot of attention (and possible add revenue too) but also a lot of new room to theorize.

I get why a live action version would be cool and absolutely terrifying, but honestly the animation style is what freaks me out the most about Coraline lol

I think that the scene where she locks the door saying there’s “rat crap in it” was really her seeing the portal and trying to protect coraline from it knowing her curiosity.

And also because traditionally there were many beliefs regarding mirrors and souls. One of which being that a witch could use a mirror to trap a person inside like a prison. In fact many people believed that mirrors aren't a reflection of the world at all, but 'Looking Glasses' that allow you to see into an alternate reality. Supposedly it's really bad to have two mirrors directly facing each other, apparently it creates a portal through which all sorts of things can come into our world.

I know I'm a little late here, just binging your videos as is only healthy to do once in a while. These theories remind me very much of another story, a novel series by the name of the malazan book of the fallen. A fantasy series which includes a magic system called the warrens. Effectively alternate worlds layered over, under, through and around the world the story takes place in. And also often linked together. But the things that make me draw similarities are 1: at numerous times it is shown that the standard practice for sealing a rent between warrens is by sealing it with a person or being, sacrificing a soul. 2: the presence of the "houses of the azath". Without writing an essay myself on fictional lore, the houses are seemingly sapient entities which spring up to capture any entity that is perceived as a threat. They are almost warrens unto themselves, with seemingly non Euclidean geometry. They generally have one resident, chosen by the house and while not immortal and neither are the houses, this keeper usually has an unusually long lifespan. I can't remember off the top of my head but I also think it was implied that the houses need to feed.
