I interviewed Cordell back in the mid 1990s for RockrGrl magazine, and she was delightful. I wish I could have played guitar like her-she was awesome.

born may 24th 1924 Born 100 years ago, Cordell Jackson was an American guitarist thought to be the first woman to produce, engineer, arrange and promote music on her own rock and roll music label. Jackson founded the Moon Records label in Memphis in 1956. Unable to break into the Sun label's stable of male artists, she received the advice and assistance of RCA Records' Chet Atkins in forming this new label to release her music. She began releasing and promoting on the label singles she recorded in her home studio, serving as engineer, producer and arranger. The artists recorded included her and a small family of early rock and roll, rockabilly, and country music performers whom she recruited from several Southern states. Her Moon Records label was the oldest continuously opera…

If I had heard this w/o knowing who the artist was, I would have sworn that it was one of the old black blues guitarists.

Hassle Atkins seems to sound a lot like her. Does anyone know if she had a big influence on him?

I was thinking the same thing. There was a band called The A-Bones from Brooklyn who served as the backing band for both Hasil and Cordell Jackson at some point. I'm sure there was some connection there.

I admire her as an independent producer, writer and guitarist in a time when very few people were playing that sort of music And as a woman she would when faced EXTRAORDINARY barriers to overcome in the male-dominated industry But…and it pains me to say this…she’s just not that good! She’s got a couple of licks she plays over and over, but she’s out of time a lot of the time. It’s a jerky performance There’s footage of her playing on Letterman with his band; to their credit they’re all virtuoso musicians but they are watching her like a hawk as she chops and changes and slips in and out of time And her guitar always seems out of tune 😢

@@hollymccord7838 not at all! My critique explicitly stated that I’m an admirer of her determination, dedication & sympathetic to the prejudices she’s faced But I would have made the same observations of the actual playing regardless of gender. For someone who was likely self taught back in the time when guitar instruction was nearly non-existent, she did as well as many players of the same generation Maybe more so with the definite style she has But like many “outsider music” pioneers the raw edges and lack of refinement make it quite a specialty taste after all. No offence was meant
