In today's video, I overclock the Intel Core i7-13700K Raptor Lake CPU up to 6 GHz with the EK-Mana MSI MAG Z690 Torpedo EK X motherboard and EK-Pro water cooling.
Raptor Lake processors provide a lot of room for performance tuning and overclocking, especially when paired with water cooling. By using a low-end Z690 motherboard, I hope to illustrate that this previous-generation platform can still push Raptor Lake to its limits.
That said, tuning Raptor Lake doesn't come without its own challenges. I will do my best to explain how it works, and I hope you enjoy the video.

Trust me ! Watch a few more of his videos- even those where he says OC in 5 min... I am telling you that you will learn more than ever and anywhere else. I just took my 13900K to new heights and records by seeing a couple of his videos. Very in depth and detailed with explanation. And walktrough of BIOS settings etc. I knew a lot in advance over the 30 years- but the last few days I catch up and learned more than the last years! By seeing his videos. I dont know ANY other YT explaining it like that and actually know what they talk about! :) I am not saying your knowledge are low or anything- I dont know you- but try to check out some of the recent videos. like 13900K @ 6 ghz or KS @ 6200 .... the techniques and approach was faily unknown for me and I feel I have expert knowledge now with the latest generation of modern CPUSs :) Also my 13900K are now running 6 x x60 and 8 x x58 cores now.. something that previously was impossible (I thought! also low bin). I even today had it up and running with 8 x all core @ 6 ghz.... something I was not able to make it do two days ago! ;) haha.. That setup was pretty hot though but stable! But this was due to watching 3-4 of his videos. I am a subscriber now! :D

Then I upgraded again for an i7 8700k, and got 5.2ghz on all cores. Then I went away for five years. Now I'm ready to get the new one and get back to overclockin.

@jameselrick6698

At 6ghz it would not be necessary as the performance for most games would be minimal at best. But not enough for the constant power draw that would be needed for your cpu. Best undervolting your cpu instead for lower power pull, then OC your gpu for more drastic results in games.

There are many throttling mechanisms inside your CPU, so it's possible the CPU throttles for another reason than over-temperature. I think HWiNFO has more detailed information on what is causing the performance throttling, so you can check that.

When you do the turbo ratio offset, I don't understand why your average AVX clock is only 4900 MHz when you didn't set an AVX offset. Should it not be trying to run at 5800 MHz (which I know would be impossible to get stable). Also, why you always recommend turning off TVB for the 13700K? Out of the box it doesn't even use TVB, the temp table is all 0s and it only actually does anything if you configure it yourself.

How to you determine which cores can clock higher than others? Also what do you consider stable? Just completing your benchmark suite?
@SkatterBencher
@SkatterBencher Жыл бұрын
Determining which cores can clock higher: set Turbo Ratios from 1- to 8-Active Cores to the same (e.g. 60X), set Per Core Ratio Limit for each core to 60X, set adaptive voltage, go in OS and run either CoreCycler or Prime95 non-AVX with affinity to 1 core. Then check which are stable and which aren't. Finally decision on stability is (1) pass entire benchmark suite back-to-back, (2) pass 30min Prime95 small FTTs non-AVX, and (3) pass 30min Prime95 small FFTs AVX. Usually it's one of the benchmarks that is proving most difficult to pass, like AI Benchmark.

I'm trying to build a 13600K build with MSI Pro Z690-A Wifi motherboard as it supports both DDR4 & DDR5. But the MSI MAG Z690 Tomahawk Wifi has better VRM than this but lacks DDR5 support Which one should I pick? Is DDR5 going to be a main thing in future?

You either have it wrong or have written it wrong. The MSI Z690 Pro-A has two variants, one DDR4 the other DDR5. The same motherboard can not support both DDR4 and DDR5 at the same time. The same is true for the MSI MAG Z690, there are two variants, the one that supports DDR4 and the DDR5 one.

I've used AI OC as an OC Strategy since SkatterBencher #10 with 10900K and always found it to be a legitimate way for quick overclocking. For Raptor Lake, I've only tried it with 13600K. As I said my friends at ROG, I was extremely impressed with this generation's automatic tuning and performance uplift.

@52:03 should follow the configurations you name, instead of the ones illustrated right? @54:21 my MSI Z790 edge states x59 instead of x54 or x60. Does that mean that i can only configure x59 as max? because BIOS wouldn't know what voltage to give x60, correct?

For i5, my understanding is Intel does not mark best cores. I assume you'll talk about how to quickly find the best/worst cores in future? Sorry if I missed it and it's in the video already. Thanks for the guide. Oh yeah, also: As Buildzoid says (and also in my experience), any load on each core no matter how light triggers all core freq. So even in a game dominated by single core perf, 1/2/3/4 core boosts seem to rarely kick in... I got 5.72ghz on my 13600kf and what crashed me was opening Minecraft because it hits all cores very hard for few seconds. I had to decreased power limit and increase voltage when my primary concern is single core perf.
@SkatterBencher
@SkatterBencher Жыл бұрын
I do this so often that I forget checking which cores clocks the best is not a trivial part of the overclocking process. I'll try to find a way to include it in the future. As for your 13600KF, what I suspect is happening is that Minecraft may be using AVX. If yes, that makes tuning a little more complicated on Raptor Lake. While there is an AVX negative ratio offset option available, the offset is not always triggered. If it's not triggered, then the only way to finetune is increase voltage (enerally, AVX requires slightly higher voltages than SSE for the same frequency) or drop the ratio.
@BoredErica

@@SkatterBencher Thanks for the reply. I think it does use AVX, but does not trip AVX offset. Makes it tricky to OC for.

Can't convince my Gigabyte gaming X to work with v/f offset for 13700k on 58x2 56x4 55x8 I put it into selection offset mode (v/f curve) and see stock 1-9 fused points and 10, 11 additional points if I put any offset on points 9, 10 or 11 it applies it to the entire curve For example, without offset my mb defaults to 1.330v, I put +100mv offset on point 11 and on any load (5.0, 5.2, 5.7 ghz or higher) i get ~1.3-1.4v. If I put negative offset on corresponding points, it doen't work. still 1.3-1.4v Tried leaving other v/f points in auto, tried setting them on 0 offset. Tried leaving vcore on auto, putting it on normal, setting specific voltage... no difference... What do I do wrong here?

It sounds like there are motherboard auto-rules that are interfering with your V/F configuration. Did you check if the AC LL, DC LL, or VRM LLC change when you make manual adjustments in the BIOS?

@@SkatterBencher To be honest, I don't really know how to check. All LL stuff on auto, and board doesn't show numbers behind it. I only changed LLC, put it on medium... @SkatterBencher Жыл бұрын
Due to TjMax thermal throttling. I point out here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pqDTgqWugJqSpLc that on this BIOS, VF9/10/11 are all programmed the same even though VF9 and VF11 should be different. The result is that for ratios 54X to 60X the voltage configured is the same (+100mV, or 1.426V). When Prime95 loads 57X at 1.426V ... it will immediately throttle.

Me neither. That's why I use Prime 95 small FFT AVX for initial stability screening only. Prime 95 blend non-AVX is more realistic. I let this grind for hours. Many other realistic tests are available: Cinebench, Blender, et al. And of course your own application software. For me, it's Photoshop, LAME, and 7zip.

Fake 2 cores oc'ing is useless and misleading for most people. I'd like to see ALL core oc for daily usage instead. E cores and cache speed oc is also interesting and has some practical benefits for real world usage. Max cache speed without e-cores is also very useful for FPS games. Ecores makes hitregs in FPS games highly unreliable and the TTK feels longer. This is because the physical ringbus is longer with the ecores on so the latency is worse. This has a huge effect on how the FPS games feel.
