Why does AMD have to rush it when they clearly don't have their shit together? It's much better if they wait instead of releasing a buggy GPU with buggy software and support. But they clearly panicked for a sec when Nvidia came out with all their frame-gen BS. But then, despite a no-show in the CES, waiting for people to call Nvidia on their BS as reviews for the 5090/5080 started to show up was a better strategy than showing real numbers against Nvidia absurd numbers and also losing. A lot of the headlines wouldn't wait for actual product comparison and they would only care to compare the charts from the presentation. I don't think AMD had a lot of options to deal with that, it was a lose-lose situation. So I would ask Coretks, what would you do if you were in AMD's place? Just saying they lost is way too easier than having a solution. And I'm not even an AMD defensor or buyer, I just thought it was a bit unreasonable giving the situation, everybody can complain and kick someone on the ground, I liked more older videos with less complain and more insights about hardware rather than the market takes, which are usually quite obtuse. But I agree, AMD was full of shit with their excuses and indeed they should be more disruptive and price it on their own. On the bright side, they will be forced to price the 9070 lower than if that was a 9080 that would lose to the 5080, isn't it better that it will be priced lower and possibly beat the 5070Ti then? I agree that AMD should not focus on fake frame gen but I don't agree that AMD should put FSR4 as a side note, it got a lot of positive reviews as their prerelease obscure lab FSR in CES. They should indeed focus on their raster punching above its weight class, but they obviously have to show their new AI-based upscaling model with its improvements over its predecessor. Why the heck would they present that as just a side note?? That would be a awful marketing decision - even more since that was the only positive AMD received during CES.

Honestly, my 7900 XTX has been an excellent GPU. A bit on the power-hungry side, but at a 355w TDP it was a massive leap over my previous 200w 3060 Ti. And while it lacks the RT performance in some titles that Nvidia has, the sheer raster performance & abundance of VRAM for ~$875 (at least that’s what I paid for the ASRock Phantom OC model) is hard to beat. Even if the 9070 XT is *only* able to match that performance, I could still see it being a successful GPU if it indeed has the claimed “40% improvement” in RT & a TDP under 300w. The only downside is the 16GB GDDR6; I would’ve liked to have seen 20GB at the very least. That way cards like the 7900 XT won’t ironically age better at higher resolutions, due to having the extra VRAM that will (inevitably) become more relevant as newer titles continue to be more demanding like they have in the last 3-4 years.
@Longlostpuss2 күн бұрын
You don't need more than 16GB of VRAM for gaming, that's more than plenty. I've got an RTX 3080 10GB model and have never had a single problem with VRAM. If you are encountering issues, either:- i) The game is not optimised ii) You are experiencing a memory leak elsewhere in your system Interestingly, I've watched a lot of gaming benchmark channels and the thing I've noticed is that if you have two card of similar baseline performance and one has more VRAM packed than the other, for some reason the card with the higher VRAM is overcommitted when exactly the same settings are being used for the games. Basically the more you have, is the more the games pulls, just because. I think this whole VRAM fad is a psychological and financial trap for a lot of gamers. The number one rule is making sure your card is designed to run games at the recommended specs. You wouldn't obviously use an 8GB card if you're planning on running 4K, or really high textures and effects. Cut your clothes according to your cloth, but 16GB should be more than enough.

Disgusting isnt it. My 1070ti was 2 stacks from the top the king 1080ti (titans were not for gaming) and they where available for £400-450 on launch (£550 today) and you got TOP tier performance. as only the 1080 was above it. Now making "90" class cards has cut the REST OF THE ENTIRE STACK. Making bus and VRAM counts drop for 80/70/60 cards. 90 cards should of never existed but carried on being expensive titans. the fact they decided to milk us the gamers says a lot. now you get a 5070 and its got a MINISCULE BUS and same RAM as a 3060. and there will be likely 3/4 stacks above the 5070ti as the 80/80ti/90/Rumours of a 90TI.

Seems so for Radeon. I get the old mantra 'Radeon doesnt merely exist to lower Geforce prices for Nvidia buyers." But were past a point now where such arguments matter in brass tax. Back during the heyday of the 290x>Polaris>Vega 56 When AMD were delivering insanely good value and feature set next to Nvidia it made sense, but a lots changed over 7 years. More plainly; RDNA3 was a flop and market share dumped off a cliff from it. Even Intel ARC is picking up momentum as the B580 commonly sells out; Radeon meanwhile just doesnt seem to care anymore if their cards sell or not.

Simple story is that Lisa Sue is completely focused on CPUs since forever and had no problem to canibalize income from GPU division to supply CPU part of AMD with money. But now when their CPUs are rocking she is unwilling not only to supply GPU division with CPU money but to even get less than 50% margins. And on top of it they even give full pricing control to AIBs and retail.

They did it, they know how to do it. But it requires 3 gens of lower margins. And Lisa Sue gets wet when she thinks about CPUs so she was willing to do it with Ryzen. She is dry like Sahara when she thinks about GPUs and this is why she is not willing to do the same. Your plan is the one that seems vastly overcomplicated. AMD messed up something in their MCM setup. Thats why the 7k series high end didnt deliver how they wanted, it is probably why the high end this time is canceled. So they made a plan to use their single chips as best they could. I get what you were saying and I don’t 100% disagree with your points. But for all the CES shows in recent history you had AMD launching new GPU’s alongside Nvidia then almost immediately people stopped talking about AMD, the hype totally dissipated and people gave most of the mind share to Nvidia. It’s clear that doing GPU reveals and launches as the same time as Nvidia isn’t working, there are other reasons also besides this was AMD’s gaming market share keeps dropping year over year versus Nvidia. So they are trying something new, keeping their reveal and launches totally separate. It’s a risky move because if their graphics cards and extremely competitive in terms of performance and price they are going to get smoked. AMD’s marketing department will be more important now in building hype ahead of the release than ever before. I totally agree that all the focus needs to be around rasterization but the marketeers need to get the message across as to why this matters. I think AMD is very safe in the console space for the foreseeable future. Neither Sony or Microsoft will jump ship to anyone else because of potential issues around backwards compatibility. Game libraries and preserving games are becoming more and more important to consumers and the big companies know this. To be honest I think AMD knows that they can forget about the casual market, they need to focus on people who are reasonably technologically literate and are not focused on only buying Nvidia. They got burned very badly last time by rushing out multichip dies and they are not going to repeat the same thing any time soon by rushing.

The renaming was necessary because they became screwed up between 6000 the 7000 series going from 1:1 parity to where the 800 was suddenly competing with the 4070 on price and performance, 900 with 70ti, and 900xtx with 4080. Highly disagree they shouldn't focus on Fsr4 (upscaling,not fake frames) they absolutely should since that's a big reason people won't touch an Amd card. Also at $649....that's too much . Putting it right between the 70 and 70ti would be foolish. The 9070xt might out perform it by 10% but it doesn't matter when you're coming from nvidia and used to their features, people will either buy the weaker 5070 or pay a little more for the 5070ti just based on features and branding alone. $599 is the price it needs to be. 22% cheaper while beating it in raster by around 10% and being very similar in ray tracing. It could be close to a 30% price to performance win for the 9070xt. That's what needs to be done for marketshare, they absolutely do need to show off their upscaling improvements and RT performance. What they need to do is NOT show fake frame comparisons, that's what i agree on. It will be taking a dig at nvidia which will make Amd look better, they can announce improved frame generation but don't have bullshit charts like nvidia did lol. $599 is the key for success imo

@DamianB82 you think that amd wouldn't make money at those prices? Don't forget that the 9070 is supposed to be a midrange gpu. That and a card like that, at that price would allow for amd to gain market share. That in turn creates the basis for more and better developer support which would create the opportunity to introduce a next gen feature of their own. That and it would disrupt the gpu market which means nvidia would be forced into a price cut. So the only negatively affected company in this whole scenario is nvidia. @@svenweyers3916 AMD want to make profit that is for sure, that's why they delayed the launch and now scrambling to find the price sweet spot for those cards. You are right that at first glance it looks like they might disrupt the market if those cards where priced this way, but looking at past history (be it RX 480/Vega period), how that turned out for them? nVidia have so much branding behind them, they would have to repeat the Zen success, which took them like what 5 successful releases against Intel and still some OEMs barely offer them in some respective markets like corporate PCs and laptops. Now consider the fact that AMD is using limited wafer supply from TSMC for their whole product stack, they definitely make more buck for CPUs right now, so why on earth they would want to spend those 4nm wafers on under-priced 9070 when they could make let's say 9800X3D which sells like hot cakes right now. I don't think that enough people rely on naming to derivate performance from it. Instead, there are and will be benchmarks showing performance that would count for enough people

AMD should not chase after the same nomenclature as Nvidia. Whoever at marketing pitched that needs to be laid off because it makes no sense to me to call your stuff the "9070" when the 8800 XT gives off more name recognition and distinction for AMD's stuff. Also to 16:37 I'm sorry but you cannot expect the industry to be hard focus on pure rasterization going forward. I honestly would like to see what they've been working on relative to the AI/Neural rendering stuff as it could pertain to potential VRAM optimizations for the new hardware
@WhhhhhhjuuuuuH2 күн бұрын
I Just want a card with 48GB+ of VRAM with 7900 XTX performance to play games and Run some gen ai stuff.
@cavemanteroКүн бұрын
You're literally the only one who realizes it was all due to overpricing according to naming scheme which means they're going to sell the 9070xt at $750+...I do not believe it will be better performing than the 7900xtx and will probably be on par with the 7900xt but with less Vram

Radeon screwed up and priced the RX 9000 too high. Don't believe the lie that Radeon needed more time to get more supply and polish the drivers. The retailers already have the cards in stock and were supposed to sell them. Radeon even had an announcement post saying the cards already launched. AMD is always f'ing up.
@hoilst265Күн бұрын
Yup. That's my theory, too. AMD were meant to launch on Jan 24 (see the leaked ads), but as soon as they saw Nvidia prices they realised they were priced too high, and went silent. The next two months are being spent desperately trying to work out deals with retailers to sell the cards with way, way, less margin than what they were promised. If it were drivers or whatever? No issue. You can smooth over driver issues with gamers - who are much less likely to sue - by muttering some stuff about driver optimising for the new cards, the new games not being optimised. You can't really hide asking your retailers "Hey, you know that card you purchases off us for $600 wholesale? Yeeeeah, we're gonna haveta ask you to sell it for $550..."

The recent DeepSeek AI which slashed $600 billion off of Nvidia's stock valuation, gives AMD the chance to enter the new cheaper AI race in a bigger way than before! Get those newer GPU's out AMD, this may be your best chance to equalize with Nvidia.

Think you missed the point on the delay as you critique them on not focusing on value. Price is incredibly important in the value equation.
@cracklingice2 күн бұрын
red devil was never a starting point card. It's a top end card. Even then - that means $699 would have been around the MSRP price so they're probably actually thinking oh crap if Nvidia is charging 999 but in reality it's 1199 because there are no MSRP AIB cards - AMD is thinking $899 is the new MSRP!

Leaders don't follow trends and wait for the competition. Leaders create the rules and push over solutions and standards at their own pace (that everyone has to keep up with). AMD have had too much of easy time as a major console SOC vendor and there's so much R&D you can spend for GPU features that must fit in ~500 USD box. This directly reflects on what they can offer for the discrete GPU market in hardware and software stack. The customer base for Radeon simply doesn't justify more powerful and feature rich solution. Nvidia could've priced RTX 4090 at 2500+ USD and there would have still been queues wrapping around the block of customers ready to grab the available stock. The green team completely commands the high-margin market that can pay off all the R&D for the fancy features and performance and then some.

The 9070 XT will now know will be within 10% of the 5080 and even if priced at 649.99 which is little too high in my opinion will still be 350 cheaper than an RTX 5080. 20-25% faster than a 5070 ti which is going to average 850-950 in price where and is still 200-300 cheaper than the 5070 ti. Amd knows the specs of all of Blackwell gpus and can estimate their performance fairly accurately. It was wise to wait to see Blackwell reviews before launching their own gpus. I feel though that the 9070 XT will be an incredible buy at 599.99

What AMD needs is a competitive "RX8800/8080" - slightly slower than 9070, RDNA 4 architecture (AI/FSR dedicated chip), 256 bit, 12GB ddr7, two fans and under 270W for under 400USD!

Well I think if Nvidia was "jebating" AMD with the 5070 actually being sold as 5080, that IMHO is good for AMD. Because the benchmarks always make AMD cards look like the worse in head-to-head pairings. Of course they now have to worry about the pricing, if they will sell an 80-class card at 70-class price. But actually, the prices have been skyrocketing so much that the even todays 60-class cards are sold at past's 80-class cards prices. Remains to be seen what the performance of the 9070 will be, though. (What I find more stupid by AMD is to copy-cat the exact naming scheme, but going to a dead-end with jumping to 90x0 - why didn't they pick up 70x0 or at least 80x0?!)

If what is being proposed here at Coretek turns out to be true. Then AMD might accidentally fall into actually gaining real market share. The entire Blackwell lineup would be priced out and rendered dead on arrival. The fake frame generation gimmick did not move the needle. I can’t believe what I am about to say, AMD actually has a real chance to win. Because they played themselves

AMD is not going to win shit. You don't accidentally turn incompetence into market share gains.

Everyone demanding that they launch early alongside 5090 reviews that potentially could have been claiming 240fps at 4k, like they're supposed to be psychic and predict the press rejects the marketing and turns on nvidia. They made the right move period.

This sounds like a huge opportunity for AMD to win back some customers. Remember the 4870... They should do what they need to do and disrupt the market. I might even buy one just to support the strategy.

Microcenter has under 250 AIB 5090 GPUs NATIONWIDE. The 9070XT will have abysmal performance in comparison. Garbage at even $499.

I feel like what AMD's strategy should be doing the opposite of Nvidia. Nvidia makes a hotter and power hungry GPU - AMD doubles down on APUs and lower end GPUs and offers additional memory compression and triangle culling solutions to offset limitations. Nvidia shows RT - AMD offers radiosity or light probes based tech. Instead Radeon follows Nvidia, but with huge delay and worse industry support. It can end in a disaster, but realistically, how much worse could it get?
