Corey Hart - "Sunglasses at Night" (2014 live acoustic rehearsal version)

This live off-the-floor take of "Sunglasses at Night" was recorded during rehearsals in Fort McMurray, Alberta on October 31, 2014. This was not the planned version for the show the following day but Corey and the band (playing live behind the camera) experimented with the song as an unexpected, darker ballad and the resulting single take is what you see here. Haunting...an older man, still so cool, clouded by doubt and defensive yet vulnerable and pleading for his lover...the minor key notes on guitar and soft, broad overtones of Rob's synth, less the insistent pulsing of the original than the moody, atmospheric and slightly menacing tone of warning here. Deceiving or deceived - victim or protagonist - age serves this song so well, depth in what was at first blush a simple song about one's Wayfarers :) The edge and rasp of your voice hints at the desperation of the lyrics, now these years later the sound of a man to whom wounds have been inflicted all too repeatedly. Bravo team and Marc for capturing, again, an especially welcome glimpse of a remarkable artist at work and in a moment few see. A particularly meaningful gift for those who were not physically present in Ft. McMurray but who surrounded you in spirit, filling every last empty seat always :)

The audio was straight out of the sound board during this rehearsal in the empty theatre. Corey was facing the other musicians, who are behind the camera. What you hear was recorded live as it was performed and nothing was added.
