Greetings from Canada. Comoran are now invading our northern lakes . Our ministry is now extending the hunting season on these birds with bag limit of 15 birds per day. We are trying to make it a no limit on these destructive birds. Don't rest until you get the right to shoot as many as you can. Thank you for your work on this problem.

Will there be a no limit season opened up on old growth loggers, industrial scale trawlermen and hydraulic gold miners on the same basis - they're far more destructive than a bird eating some fish. Are you worried about them, or is it just cormorants?

The lovely small rivers and streams of the North York Moors (the Rye and its tributaries) have taken a real hammering from the increasing number of cormorants (many of which roost on the island of Castle Howard Lake). I accept that the increase in the number if cormorants and reintroduction of otters are not the main causes of the crash in fish populations, but on many rivers they are the final nail and have prevented the populations of many small species of fish from recovering. A lot of the medium and larger fish that are caught show signs of recent close encounters with cormorants. There appears to be a real shortage of smaller specimens. Ideally, the problems of excessive abstraction, pollution from agriculture and fish farms, overgrazing and poaching of the banks and destructive land drainage practices would be tackled in order to create better spawning habitats and weed cover. I can't see that happening in a hurry, so a reduction in cormorant numbers would at least provide some respite and buy some time for species such as trout, grayling, dace and roach.

I remember that in Austria, the Danube had not seen any Cormorants, they were a thing of the distant past, along with beavers etc. Well they reintroduced the furry bugger, thats knocking down old trees along the ponds of the danube "Au", that area pocketed with oxbow ponds and waterways, and the city parkland service in their infinite wisdom went to work and immediately removed the just felled trees, thus removing the larder of the "busy beaver" ....result: more trees knocked down, of course! Now they are finally scratching their heads on that one, they put wire mesh around the trees that need protection, and this "brilliant" solution took a good number of years to arrive at. Now with the Cormorant things are more difficult, hooray they are back and now even remote small streams (especially those) are freed of their trout population, and as far as I know, they are still scratching their heads. It is comical. Are Cormorants not tasty, I haven't OH, WAIT!!!!! try this! www.funny-jokes.com/humor/stories/strange_cormorant_recipe.htm

Well done lads for your efforts. The culling of these birds should be mandatory. Just reading some of the comments on here and it really just shows how uneducated and pathetic people can really be

Excellent presentation. Hopefully Martin Salter can help us do more. Sadly I counted Cormorants on every single barrage float above Gunthorpe weir on the river Trent this week. That was 50 in total, taking at least 50kg a day from the river. And then we have bright sparks adding to the pressure by releasing breeding families of Otters onto canals connected to the river in the last two years. The EA seem to have lost control of fish stock protection, and it’s not just fish but waterside birds, herons and kingfisher numbers being decimated by over predation too. We have a huge imbalance, a massive problem which the EA are doing little to improve, if not make things much worse by ill conceived Otter release and protection policies. The predation action group have lots of further information on actual studies on the real effect of over predation including one on the National watercourse lake at Holme Pierpont, proving the cormorant decimation affect. Unfortunately for me these lakes and canals “ were” my local fishing venues but are now fish “ deserts” as a result of our lack of intervention and control.

I wonder how all the little fishes managed with all those nasty predators before people came along to blast cormorants, otters, mergansers, goosanders, seals.....Maybe just maybe producing thousands of eggs a shot and having healthy rivers with clean water and plenty of cover before it was ripped out by angling clubs had something to do with it.

Nice to see Chris Tarrant putting his name to it. Ok what do I do? John Wilson was right of course . Whats the best way to reduce Cormorant numbers?

Perhaps if we had left enough fish in the seas around our coasts for cormorants to eat, we might not be having this problem

Since when did a bird which is here because it flew here become a non native invasive!?! Are they supposed to apply for a UK passport FFS! Utterly pathetic. As a former angler I was disgusted at the ecological ignorance and vandalism of the angling community so it was one of the reasons I left it. I don't see any woody material or snags in the water which is vital for providing cover from predators, spawning sites and shelter from fast flows, but anglers don't like as it makes their fishing a bit more difficult.
