Another jewel of a video. Really enjoyable, brings back a lot of fond memories for me. Seeing those corn stalks lying flat on the ground helps remember some of my own corn crops and the damage done by the pests, come to find out my son's pups were right in there with the wild life, discovered that they love corn when it's in the dough stage same as the rest of the varmints. Worse yet, my boys were covering up for their pups.

Well Brother my hybrid corn is all hand picked and cribbed. Awesome harvest incredible yield. So thankful for that. Now I have two acres of truckers left to pick. Absolutely dreading it. 😟 Open pollinated corn is hard to hand pick. The low yield makes it not worth it in my opinion. Honestly, I’m going to skip through pick only the best ears for seed corn and corn flour and call it done. Then I’m going to run a hot wire around the field and turn four feeder pigs in it and let them “hog it down”. I’ve been growing truckers favorite white since a teenager; so almost 50 years. The ONLY reason I keep it going is strictly for traditional reasons, white corn flour/meal and to continue my 20+ years of landrace seed corn. I am going to do a small plot of jimmy red and truckers to show my skinny jeans wearing homesteader transplant neighbor 😂 how to get a f1 hybrid cross be detasseling the one and only collecting seed from the other. He is a really good guy. He and his wife really loves and looks out for my mother. If I could only get him to dress like a homesteader. Looks and dresses like Albert Douglas from Green Acres when he is working. 😂😂😂 Anyway, that will be fun to do again. Produces a huge ear like the truckers but all red. But now that I’m older and no help, I’m absolutely bored and exhausted with OP corn. 😩 Well I’d better get off KZbin and get some work done. Digging sweet potatoes today. Im sitting here fighting and dreading that too. If I didn’t love gardening so much, I’d turn totally carnivore like my younger brother Micah McGie 😂😂😂 Have a great day.
@duncand5148Ай бұрын
Sorry I was so long winded. I’m really dreading digging these sweet potatoes. 😂😂😂
@McGieHomesteadAdventuresАй бұрын
😂😂😂😂 I know exactly what you’re talking about 😂😂😂 that’s a job! Also I understand the OP struggles and I totally understand! No only that, but wild animals absolutely love it……. Which is a two edged sword! I don’t wanna eat what they think is less than desirable!🤣😂🤣😂
@duncand5148Ай бұрын
@@McGieHomesteadAdventures you know I feel so stupid for never zeroing in on that before. My hybrid corn gets some damage along the wood line, but years I plant truckers by the wood line, the mammalian wildlife tear it up. I thought it was wildlife population increases, or whatever other thought I rationalized. It’s just the opposite with birds of course, because of the way the hybrids husk flare open for quick dry down and the way they are bred to hold the ear up also to support quick dry down, it makes it easy for birds to get to. But the thing about birds ( particularly migratory birds) is they are easily distracted and tend to move on after a period. Deer, raccoons and squirrels will make an OP cornfield their favorite smorgasbord or fast food restaurant. They return to it over and over until it’s gone. Interesting that I never contemplated that before. If you could have seen the blank stare that I know came over my face when I read what you said. I’m sure it was hilariously priceless. 😂😂😂.
@duncand5148Ай бұрын
Oh about the less than desirable part, that’s true too. My livestock eat the hybrid corn of course. But when I throw truckers to the hogs and goats, they get busy and get down on it. 😂. That I zeroed in on a long time ago. They must detect or know something we don’t. Probably the nutritional value. Truckers does have a higher percentage of protein over hybrids 🤔 That I know
@McGieHomesteadAdventuresАй бұрын
😂😂😂 I’d have loved to see that! I only grew GMO corn once….. a lot of years ago…… and I was horrified when the deer didn’t want it!
