Video from Arcola Illinois of custom built machines to chop the male rows of corn for silage in a seed corn field. The male rows are used only for pollination and are often just stomped down after after pollination. The machines in this video were built by Massen Ag.

Cool video Mike. Maybe they need cameras on the discharge shuts so that more silage goes in the box instead of the ground

With that design they could easily put a roof on the box, but yes, they could do alot to reduce waste.

The goal is to destroy the male rows. Harvesting silage is not the goal of the operation, any silage they get is a bonus.

I like the concept Mike. Why trample it down when someone can use it for feed value. Looks like they need to re-engineer those spouts though. Need a little more bracing to cut down on that overshooting issue.

They use to come up into wisconsin and do this. My cousins would buy the silage and haul it. Most the time the loads where so full they would hardly be able to lift up to dump into the semis or straight trucks. They only did it for a few years

So they need a higher retaining board because they are losing a lot of the chopped corn

It seems like it would be a lot more valuable on the ground as organic matter. Def not a waste. It’s right up there with bailing residue. Now rigging a boom to put down cover crops, that’s making the most out of a pass.

How do they set the planter up for that? If straddling 4 rows and chopping 2, there need a 5 row planter. In my area they use a 4 row planter with one outside seed box being male. For every pass back and forth results in 2 male rows, then 6 female rows. I'm just curious.
@Ellison89Brett
@Ellison89Brett 3 жыл бұрын
Chopping 1 row on each side. 1-4-1 pattern. Works with a 16 or 24 row planter. Half rate on outside male rows and overlap them on the next pass to get full rate.

When I drove a truck TOR, I would see fields of corn with tops cut off in Iowa Illinois an Indiana. Now I know why. I was born and raised on farm but never saw this in the south. Really I thought tops were cut to make more nutrients go into ears instead of stalks. Kinda the concept of spraying Pix on cotton.

Great video. This is great thinking. It seems like the overshooting of the box is caused by the discharge shoot being a little on the flimsy slide. Stiffening it up some by adding a third or fourth attachment point from the chassis would likely do the trick.

Maybe a slanted roof to the rear of the wagon would catch all of the chopped corn silage....the silage would still slip out of the wagon unimpeded.

I think the goal is not to collect the silage. The purpose is to get rid of the male plants. If all the silage was collected the load would be too big to fit in the collectors. Now the system is synchronized 2 collectors fill one green trailer and 2 trailers fill 1 truck. The overshoot might give some nutrients later so it is not waisted.

Exactly they'd never make it to the end if they caught every bit of it.

The semi was only a hundred yards away, why not dump the harvesters right into it. So much inefficiency with wasted corn blowing over the box and an extra tractor and dump wagon, no wonder seed corn is so expensive.
