By "corned beef"; she means what the rest of the Anglosphere calls BULLY BEEF. It's got nothing to do with actual Corned beef, the salt-cured side of beef that's then poached/simmered. For some reason, at some stage in the early 20th century (possibly during the depression); in the UK (alone) actual corned beef became unavailabe & forgotten about and they started calling bully beef "corned beef".

It amazes me how much confidence people seem to have when they are so very wrong. The uk has never had a 'depression' that's the US. We use recession but either way, that bit was wrong. Bully beef and canned corned beef also not the same thing. What America and Canada call corned beef is usually a form of salt beef from the Jewish culture not the traditional corned beef we have in the uk and Ireland which dates back centuries. Corning and salting was a way to preserve the meat, it was later canned to travel with the navy and then feed the colonies. Bully beef is pieces or off cuts of the American/Jewish beef - not the same thing.

@@danieleyre8913 you live that dream, I can assure you that there is only one of us spouting nonsense and it's not me. When was this depression you speak of in the uk? Why does canned corned beef pre date bully beef? How is it I'm talking nonsense when what you've said literally makes no sense 😁😁😁😁

we used to have corned beef pie when I was a kid and I loved it - tried it on my own kids and they were totally unenthusiastic - we did it slightly differently, very thinly sliced raw potato on the bottom, thinly sliced onion, thinly sliced corned beef, and maybe a few more slices of potato on the top, then pour over a couple of beaten eggs before putting the crust on the top, it makes nice layers when you cut into it Tip - refrigerate the corned beef (still in its tin) beforehand to make it easier to slice Cheryl, you take me back to my "roots", I must make one of these again

It was not very good TBH, but I always have a can of the stuff around in case I feel the need to take a trip down memory lane. This looks like a much more palatable way to go there!
