this is not a very accurate framing. the citizens never had control over governance - the governmental system in america was designed to compartmentalize power and control who gets to count as a citizen in the first place. not to get too far in the weeds here, but the very concept of a "citizen" inherently requires violent assertion of state power. all "we the people" have done is continually chase down this artifically imposed concept of "citizenry" and tried to keep expanding its definition so that these supposed "equal rights" are actually available to all people - something that is simply antithetical to a capitalist system, which is part of why it feels like no progress has been made in half a century.

I feel we need a democratic nationalism, and a civil nationalism, to counter the faux nationalism we're being offered. Democratic to establish that no one's too good for the nation, and to establish representative government. Civil to establish the culture conducive to democratic organization. Civil Rights have been around a long time, now. They've shaped the organizational culture in military, government, education, etc. MLK Jr provided the roadmap to a better form of nationalism. It's just taken a long time for some people to listen. It's a shame we don't have a more robust defense of Civil Rights, and the civil culture it produces from this left wing. Also, to place equal responsibility on the right wing for their enforcement and interpretation. Civil Rights should be the right wing position, and civil nationalism the left wing. When push comes to shove, most of us prefer the culture of Civil Rights, despite the complaining and arguing.

I have a few friends & relatives who have spent time in the prison system. I live in Los Angeles District Attorney Gascon has been extremely lackadaisical when it comes to crime. It has caused Flash mobs running rampant destroying property, creating a very unsafe and dangerous community. Unfortunately I know folks who have spent 15+ years in prison and have been released, but 7+ years later they have still not joined society, they are institutionalized in their mind and angry. Posted this as a reply to someone living abroad, I have been researching politics, social issues and psychology for most of my Life and I have come to some conclusions about how we got here, here is some of my ideations. The only difference between now and before, is that trump has no governor, no limit, no guardrails, but the fact is, Unscrupulous people have always sought powers, it’s the nature of the bully, to seek to control, their seething insecurities Demand such restitution. This is not to say, people of good character, don’t arise on the occasion, just not here and now. IMHO, Trump is a symptom of a much larger problem, one of moral ineptitude, an inability for people to recognize the Difference between, genuine inflection into the broader issues of social organization, and a bid used to cease Power by playing this strong man, who claims will only wield power to manage the tangled bramble of corruption, to bring an end to nepotisms Child. It’s just so absurd, for people to fail to grasp, rule of law and not the law of the jungle, is necessary to maintain Government integrity. Accountability, requires transparency, redress, assembly, press. All to put pressure to assign accounting of behavior. Once you live in the age of contrarianism, where disingenuous behavior dominates. We are facing the end of the Age of Enlightenment.. ✌️
