Corona Arch, Musselman Arch, Shafer Pass & Mesa Arch - Moab, Utah
This is a little different than my normal video. Sort of. This isn't really a destination/trail. This is just a video of a day during our recent trip to Moab, Utah. I've wanted to check out Corona Arch for a while now, and this was the time. We got up early - highly advised because of all the crowds. Corona Arch is a well known hike. I'd almost say it's the second most famous arch in Utah, behind Delicate Arch. The hike to Corona Arch is fairly straightforward. A few miles out and back and a little bit of elevation gain. It's very easy to follow the trail. When it gets onto the slickrock, there are painted dots to lead the way. And soon enough, there you are. Corona arch is off in the distance....and it is absolutely massive. Along the way, you pass by Bowtie Arch; an interesting hole in the canyon wall to your left. But Corona Arch is the main course, and it delivers. Go early. The trail is easily accessible off Potash Road, with a short hike and big pay off.
It's worth it.
After checking out Corona Arch, Tina wanted me to see Potash Road up to Shafer Pass. After the potash ponds, you enter into Canyonlands National Park. The roads aren't too bad, but I would recommend a vehicle made for off roading. We attempted this in the Tacoma in winter a few years ago, but the snow made the roads terrifying and impassable.
On the way to Shafer Pass, we made a quick detour to Musselman Arch. This is accessed along White Rim Road (I think) and a permit is required, so plan ahead. Musselman Arch was amazing and worth the trip.
Then it was back to business to do the climb up Shafer Pass. Shafer Pass is intimidating, but not actually that bad. And it is absolutely mind blowing. In good conditions, most any truck or jeep or SUV will make it, but take that for what it's worth; I'm not an ATV expert. But nothing here made me nervous.
At the top, we checked out some overlooks and finally Mesa Arch. Mesa Arch is an easy to access, extremely popular photo op in Canyonlands National Park. It's worth the short trip for the picture, but don't expect any peace and quiet.
Overall, day 1 at Moab was amazing. Day 2 as well...but that's another video.

YES! Here I am sitting in my little Off-Grid trailer in Sand Flats (Moab) and wondering what to do today. Now I know! Thanks so much for your great videos. I love how you guys interact and appreciate the mature approach to your videos. Thanks for no “Yo - what’s up KZbin. I think I’ll just follow you around (two years later).

Haha! I once was coming down Humphrey's and telling Tina how I could not bring myself to say "And don't forget to SMASH that like button and SUBSCRIBE!....I'm a 50 year old man and way too old for that." Just then we passed a mother/daughter who were off to the side of the trail and the daugther was cracking up at me. Just kinda reiterated that I need to act my age. Hope you got to see some cool stuff while you were out there.

@@JerryArizona Hey Jerry: I’m only 76 so probably only have about 20 more years of adventure and exploring. I followed your trail to Corona (crowded) but Musselman was empty of people and absolutely awesome. Your videos are just wonderful - and I’m trying to view them all and discover some other places to visit. I was going to do the entire White Rim trail today (Jeep Gladiator) but it was very windy so I put if off until tomorrow. Thanks for you excellent work - I know how much time it takes to edit your videos but your efforts are certainly appreciated.

The amount of times we have to clarify to waiters/waitresses in Mexican restaurants that a) we want the big margaritas and b) just go ahead and bring us a second round of both margaritas AND chips and salsa is downright embarrassing. (And also makes me slightly proud.)

Jerry and Tina! You guys are awesome. My wife Tina and I love watching your videos. Not only for the great scenery and activities, but because of your great personalities. We watch and laugh because that would be so like us in a lot of instances. We are currently on a quest to mountain bike in all 50 states and are up to 22. We find ourselves laughing about the same issues you 2 reveal. Keep up the adventures and the great work. You do a wonderful job setting up the videos and structure/information. PS: Tina's favorite part is when you both go for Mexican after each adventure. She does the same thing.

I used to watch your videos back when you had 400 subs. I was inspired by many of your videos, but I stopped checking in after I quit making videos. After a year its nice to see how you have grown a channel with just great content. You deserve more honestly, but it will come in time. Thank you!

I have had that happen so many times where some folks don’t know your waiting for the good photo spot, I think in some other crowded cultures there just not used to waiting. Good for you to mention that. Also I have noticed that some will spend a good amount of time taking self photos not being mindful that others are waiting to go on with there day. I have almost given up on crowded areas. Thanks for showing us coyote Gulch, we’re going to try that one mid May on a overnighter thanks to you Jerry!, woops, I mean Mr Arizona!

Enjoy. Coyote Gulch is great. So many other options there too. Zebra slot, tunnel slot, Dante slot, peek-a-boo/spooky gulch, red breaks, cosmic ashtray, willis creek, reflection canyon....I'm sure I'm missing some. If you have a 4WD and a strong constitution for off road adventures, it's fun taking Smokey Mountain Road from Big water to cut across. (DO NOT take that way if it rained recently; part of the road is basically just driving in a dry creekbed.)

Back in the late 1970s, I had an Alfa Romeo GTV4 Alfetta that I drove down the Schaffer trail and then proceeded on the Potash road to exit this area. It was amazing how many jeepters staired me down doing this trail in an Alfa. Now there were two washout crossing were I had to spend a few minutes building up the road so I would not bottom out and damage my finned aluminum oil pan. However I made it out safely with no vehicle damage. No way could I have gone from the bottom to the top of Schaffer trail due to the tall gearing of my trans-axle gear case. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfa_Romeo_Alfetta. Since then I've done the White Rim trail at least a dozen times in more appropriate 4X4 vehicles, with the latest in my Sprinter Van. Note this is a low roof version and over on the Green River side there is a section of overhanging rocks where a high roof version will not have clearance.
