£575 for a house in 1964 is less than 11 grand in today's money. Just shows you how utterly disgustingly overpriced our housing market is. An equivalent house in similar area is now a minimum of 60k. Bloody outrageous!

I wont tell you my age but, if I tell you that when my wife and I got married our 3 bed semi cost us £3,000 you could probably work it out! I heard a programme on radio 4 recently which suggested that if other goods had increased in price at the same rate as property a loaf of bread would now be about £7 / £8! Youngsters today don't stand a chance!

@@edward6960 I guess some people became rich later in life by buying houses one after the other, using equity from 1 house to buy another. I mean people are still making money by doing that.

I've just realised Leanne Battersby's voice today sounds a lot like Hilda Ogden when she goes off on one.

It always amazes me how good the acting was. Acting in the 60s wasn't always awfully realistic, but these characters really were. I guess a lot of that is down to the script but the actors continued knock it out of the park. I grew up watching Corrie back in the sixties in my childhod and I guess the habit stuck. I watched it for most of my adult life too.

The estate agent here is Ivor Dean, who played Insp. Large in "Randall & Hopkirk (Deceased) and Insp. teal in ''The Saint'. A great actor. Sadly died in 1977.

Betty Driver actually auditioned for the role of Hilda Ogden too, but the role went to Jean Alexander. The original concept of the Ogdens was quite different to how they turned out in later years. The idea was that they would be the problem family of the street, with Stan being violent and Hilda being a neglectful mother. The warmth in the way that Jean Alexander and Bernard Youens played the parts though soon made that seem unrealistic, and they morphed into the comedy couple of the street in the later 60s, 70s and early 80s before Bernard Yuens health made it impossible to carry on. Their role as the comedy couple on the Street was then taken over by Jack and Vera Duckworth.

I reckon Derek and Mavis were a fantastic runner up. Thelma Barlow wanted to leave and so they killed Derek off (rather than Mavis). Jean Alexander said in an interview that it was a terrible mistake to do that and Thelma Barlow mentioned that they should have killed Mavis off instead and allowed Derek to survive. Mavis's scene when she gets the birthday locket after Derek's death is as emotional as Hilda holding Stan's glasses. You don't get actors and acting like this anymore !

At least they played "Authentic" Pop Music. On The US Soaps they weren't allowed until 1978 when Second Time Around by Shalamar was one of the first real pop songs played on The Soap Opera Another World. I once read that Stan & Hilda Ogden were based on Andy Capp The Comic Strip.

@stevouk And with all due respect, he must more importantly be remembered for playing Inspector Large opposite the much missed and underated Mike Pratt as Jeff Randall in the brilliant 'Randall & Hopkirk Deceased'. This and 'Catweazle' and 'Andy Pandy' are my 1st memories of tv...not a bad start! Be seeing you!

In the early years Coronation Street was character driven rather than plot driven. The characters were drawn and realistic and the plots centred on the day to day lives of ordinary working people. Today it’s the opposite, the characters are less interesting and the plots are ridiculous. You are more likely to be killed in Coronation Street than in he most dangerous war zone these days

Isn't it amazing that they are playing Music from an Authentic British Group when in the US Music by "actual" Artists weren't played until around the 1970's. Also, is it true that The Ogdens were inspired by Andy Capp like The Flintstones were based on The Honeymooners.
