Coronation street was always derided at the time in the uk popular press for what they saw as... Corrie alledgedly not being exactly in tune with then modern realitys visually. Sally's character looks fine as an average example and realistic enough visual representation of a young woman in uk 85 86. leggings in the basic form we know them now arrived in the latter part of 1982 in the uk and by the mid to late 80's were the most popular fashion item, i wore the new legging style in a profushion of colours fabric etc and short quilted bomber jackets short fitted denims with iconoclastic motifs were really in, Next did a lot of those. Basic sporty crop tops and corinne drewery type fashion cut razored out bobs were really in fashion in the uk 86 87 for younger folk with choppy textured fringes with bold hilights or strong dark colour. Brickwind box perms with slight layoring were a hang over style from the very early 80's were slowley on the way out as straighter and less spike curl and height driven styles began to wane around 1987 in the uk. Apart from the deliberately ironic puffball skirt,, flouncy frill dresses were not youth or street fashion in the uk at the time in 86 87, more slender simple designs were more fashionable. Fitted clothes pam hogg style things boy of london all crept in to the mainstream from designer to hi street rip offs, blue tartan skinny jeans zips bottom of leg and bright pastel cardys were also in, as was the naval jumper and chinos look for fellas none of which appears in corrie. Fashion changed and progressed very quickly in 80's uk, it could be very hard to keep up at times as a young person back then, everything was a first then but run of the mill now as many styles still exist in basic form,, from then, leggings being one honest example of an 80's style still utilised today, i have fashion mags that prove this. flat pointed shoes kitten heel or chunky sandals in funky styles were in. but since coronation street tried to retain its dirgy working class grittiness with lots of humour ,, being very very fashionista would not have worked then in context of what they conveyed, the 90's was when bigger change happened in corrie, by then it was really expected as irony visually was not accepted that way by then. it was all so much more subtle before the 90's,i mean until the late 80's there really was much visual irony and hangover from earlier period stylings in corrie, from the first half of the 20th century post war etal,, but at times prior tothe 90's corrie did try subtle updating with ray and deidres house in 77 and len and ritas new build in 82 to show some aspirational qualitys in a subtle acceptable working class realisti way. we differed in the uk then and realism meant more to the public than fluffy escape, for the most part.

Love the 1986 Ford Pinto Mike bought Susan. 🤣
@leesusan9073 Жыл бұрын
The car that Mike bought for Susan is not a ford pinto lol,, it is an unrelated much different car designed by and made by the then existing british company, British leyland..... later to be renamed Austin Rover. The car in question is A Mini Metro 1985 mode with al 1984 slight redesign, the car is a uk car and not an american car. The Mini Metro or Austin Metro as it was initially called was first showcased in late 1979 and released in late 1980 to the general public with a huge ad campaign that decried "A car to beat the world" a very popular car and remained in production with some updates until 1997 in the uk. In late 1981 Austin released the sporty MG Metro with gia seats etc for the 1982 uk market, it was a fairly nippy modern little car at the time good on fuel etc. A ford pinto is an altogether totally different american car, never sold or seen in the uk. The Pinto was a mid 70's style super mini type car with unusual square looks very different in its time too, and good on fuel during the oil crisis,, but would not have been considered modern enough for british styles and tastes at the time the Metro arrived in 80 81. all meant with good thoughts and kindness xx. hope this little potted history helps about the two cars :-).

Ken is so wrong to be carrying on like this. The most important day of his daughter's life should be way more important than his petty quarrels with Mike. He wants to try growing up a bit and accept the fact that he cannot control the uncontrollable. Susan is old enough to make her own decisions and is quite at liberty to choose the man she wants to marry. That does not need to meet with anyone else's approval, not even her father's! @leesusan9073 Жыл бұрын
If you were young and truely fashion minded in 86 87, none of the hair in corries women was of that time, it was hangover from late 70's very early 80's in reality, Sally was a good honest but average, as her character should be, representation of a young woman in 86 87. Deidre and susan both have layered styles that hark back to late 70s type early 80's flounce, and bets hair was more ironic comical and iconic deliberately for all the wrong reasons with her early 80s layered full fringe and late 60's styled hairpiece lol. As i and my young friends experienced it at the time, By 86, straighter less voluminous,, edgy, bobbed or close cropped,, and razored styles were in, long multi layered demi waved, or slice cut, shattered, textured type techniques were truly fashionable amongst younger people, brick perms, flicks, poodle curls, (except for the more dated american rock bands lol) and overly spiked styles and the so called mullet and styles like jenny bradleys were starting to wane too in place of more fashion oriented sleek styles, and less and less spikey hair styles were fashionable by 86 87 as clean cut fade styles or graduated hair was in for both or all sexes. but corrie had to be more ironic and post war gritty and true trends were'nt ever really truely part of corrie until the 90's wore on as by then younger demographcs and public expectations demanded corrie to truely catch up as irony in the early post war 20th century style,, was no longer visually acceptable then in the 90's onward,, but mid 80's corrie is a hotchpotch of visual irony and wasnt always up to date in mid 80's terms in all reality As a young woman in 86, i'd have thought back then that corries ladies looked ded average and not really fashionable, more dreary and downbeat in all honestly except for sally and a few other intermittent exceptions here and there, so i think more before that time was most hair in 86 corrie, and no where truly near of that time as its all fashion hangovers from earlier periods really. @@nicolataylor6011
