A shame Jean Alexander left, just wish they didn't force a replacement like Vera's mother. Legacy characters should have been left as is, like Ena and her gang and Annie Walker. No one could replace the roles.
@marjoriejohnston3038 Жыл бұрын
Yes. They shouldn't even try to pass the role of an icon character on to anyone. It doesn't work.
@shylinh59397 ай бұрын
Hilda, Mrs Sharples and Mrs Walker and Elsie Tanner were fundamental characters who were there for a long time, reflecting the Streets very strong Matriarchal theme. Listen to Tony Warren, he wanted to replicate what he knew. There were some strong male characters, but it was very women driven, and it's what made it so great. The characters that this programme was built on were irreplaceable and once they went, and what they represented disappeared, the programme went massively downhill. It stopped focusing on creating lasting characters to characters who were there to carry sensationalist story lines. Who could have imagined a character created to become a serial killer in the earlier post millennium period? Let alone the 60s, 70s and 80s. It's almost like it's ended up as a slasher version of the programme. And it became a load of crap for it.

@@masterknife8423 yeah, but it’s the writers fault. Everyone has consequences for their actions…it’s part of good writing. The Street can be absolutely brilliant at times with their humor and pathos, etc, but Vera seems to be absolved from all consequences of her actions. Every effing time. Bad character writing. I’m really loving that Ken Barlow is suffering big time for his action..(jealous of Deirdre’s council job, has affair with the leaker, loses his job, his newspaper, his wife, his daughter, his car and then his new girlfriend, boy they threw the book at him. But Nooooooo, nothing for Fat Mouth Vera.

This was the beginning of a new era for Corrie. The 1988-89 revamp was much needed as the show was now having to heavily compete with the more trendy Eastenders.

@@madwatermelon1316 I'm currently watching 1993 i don't think its too bad yet really. There are some signs of deterioration but its still quite watchable. One thing that stands out about the 90s is an increase in characters who feel like they belong in EastEnders like Jim McDonald is the Corrie version of Grant Mitchell (ex army with violent tendencies) but Jim actually appeared in Corrie before Grant appeared in EE

Corrie was suffering throughout 1988, just like it was in 1985 with all the major departures of the previous few years. 1989 would see Corrie enter a new era. Bill Podmore as producer was a bit stale by this point and new blood was needed at the top. However, as I mentioned in a previous comment, Coronation Street is miles better here than it has been over the past 20 years.

The three Walnut Whip mentions between Sally & Curly were blatant product placement advertising. Quite shameful taking the viewers for mugs that way whilst ITV were obviously taking a big wedge from Nestlé. Anyway, rant over.
@eatmywords2 жыл бұрын
it was ITV and perfectly acceptable for them to product place, and even take "bribes" from companies to push forward certain items. the bbc was once unable to have any product placement, because it was a public company. you may have noticed a lot of the cars on the show were british made; jaguar, mini, rover. it made no difference, as they were all bankrupt by the end of the 90s.
@TheGlassman632 жыл бұрын
@@eatmywords You say the BBC could not have product placements. I suggest you watch a few of the Only Fools And Horses episodes. I seem to recall one such episode when The Daily Mirror newspaper got blatantly flashed about in the pub & cafe with the sole intention of making sure the folk at home get an eyeful of it.
@eatmywords2 жыл бұрын
@@TheGlassman63 that is true, but it doesn't mean they didn't get into trouble for direct placements. eastenders got into trouble for promoting weetabix in the fowlers house. and who complained? all the other cereal companies.

This Lisa woman ain't no friend of Jenny's. She's about to steal Patrice away from Jenny and warn him of Jenny. That's not what friends do for each other. Jenny was never interested in Lisa's so called flirting of a husband. She's in love with Patrice the new French man. And now Lisa is about to ruin Jenny's chance with Patrice. And when Jenny finds out what Lisa said to Patrice about her. She will be more than angry. She'll be upset. Lisa is going to warn Patrice about Jenny as Lisa's way of getting back at Jenny because of that thing regarding Lisa's flirting husband who actually kissed Jenny first not the other way around. Lisa is twisted in the head. She's not happy because she lost her husband and blaming Jenny for it by warning Patrice of Jenny etc. Jenny hasn't done anything to Lisa or Lisa's husband. Lisa should get her facts right first before blaming others for her marriage falling apart which is not Jenny's fault. It's all Lisa's husband's fault. Because Lisa's husband is a womanizer and always will be.

By 'eck, why not just rent property off of Hilda for few years, until bad debt settled and your credit rating improved? Not sure if Kevin is self employed or PAYE? In 90s, I was self employed but could not get mortgage as didn't have (at the time) 3 years worth of accounts. Yet, I switched to PAYE and got accepted for mortgage with 1 months wages. A few years later the firm I worked for went bust. No one knows the future. If, you shout at 'em at mortgage interview Kevin, that will clinch it lad. Wouldn't mind fondling Sally's walnut whips.
