As other viewers have said, that Arnold Swain was a seriously nasty piece of work. It seems as if Emily only married him due to being thrilled over all the flattery and attention she received - now known as 'lovebombing''. In previous months episodes, it's clear to see that she had plenty of doubts but was always talked out of them by Arnold's blandishments and also Deirdre's matchmaking. If Deirdre had kept her mouth shut, or had taken her rose-coloured glasses off for long enough to see Arnold's bullying tendencies, then this disastrous marriage wouldn't have happened. But whole attitude seems to be any man is better than no man. How stupid.

So, Emily was so head over heels in love with that grumpy old misery Ernest, that she has fallen for the first man who gave her a second glance since E's violent death? Blimey, life does go on, doesn't it Emily! No point grieving for long! Nice choice in Arnold... I'm surprised she isn't constantly tripping over all the red flags he keeps chucking down. She seems so desperate for another man in her life that she is happy to ignore his male chauvinist rants. Ever heard of living happily as a single woman, Emily?
@glamdolly30
@glamdolly30 2 жыл бұрын
Sadly it's an all too authentic story - especially for Emily's generation, when being a wife, even to the dreariest, most abusive husband, was the summit of a woman's ambition. I'm glad the writers didn't marry Emily off again after the bigamy storyline - I think she had a near-miss after this, when she was jilted by another dull little man. Emily was far more believable as a widow - she had a full life, and I think saw how much worse it could be to re-marry, when she had Percy as a lodger! Look at Mavis, always so misty eyed about marriage, and so desperate to jettison her spinster status, that she married the ghastly Derek. Even the writers got so sick of him that they killed him off. Nuff said!

@glamdolly30
@glamdolly30 2 жыл бұрын
@@bsaunders5271 Is that what she said? I didn't know that, very interesting. I'm surprised the writers had the nerve to kill Derek off if Thelma Barlow was against it. I think - regardless of Derek's departure - Thelma was right to exit the show when she did. She had worked very hard and was a great, central cast member since the early seventies. She obviously did not want to die in the saddle like her best friend Rita/Barbara Knox! And had Thelma Barlow stayed in Corrie for too much longer, she wouldn't have had the chance to do other roles, particularly the Victoria Wood sitcom 'Dinnerladies' in which she was such a big character. I've met Thelma Barlow a couple of times, she's a quiet, kind and highly intelligent lady. The last time I saw her was at the memorial for a mutual friend, and I was shocked at how frail and elderly she looked. But then I checked and realised she was at that time 87 years old! (She is 92 now, so four years older than Barbara Knox).

It's a great rip-off for the financial parasites. Build a house with cheap materials for sixpence and sell it for a tenner. Now they've also got you begging for employment for the next forty years.

I would never buy a house where it takes two buses to get to work, more time and expense) out in the middle of no where! No restaurants even, and expensive! They should have rented that flat in town, or better yet, stayed with the in-laws! If she stayed with the in -laws, she wouldn’t whine (of course) “We need the money!” How can she waitress when she can barely walk??!

Nice to see Jack Smethurst as Eddies mate Johnny I remember Jack in many British shows & most famously or infamously in Love Thy Neighbour Which was so racist But in the late 70s & 80s was seen as acceptable! Just shows how things have changed! Its hard to believe in those times How badly the Black community was treated & thought to be ok I can remember how everyones favourite show was the Black & White Minstrels! Its unthinkable today & rightly so! Although i must admit Corrie did have Black people in the crowds in the Rovers, plus Black actress Angela Bruce as Janice Stubbs As Ray Langtons ex lover However briefly, but its sign of the times how few Black actors Were in shows & tv programmes. Thank you PG 66 🇬🇧👧

Love Thy Neighbour in and of itself wasn’t racist. It was meant to depict the bigotry and ignorance of people like Smethurst's character toward those of colour. That show as well as Til Death Do Us Part were programmes that, through comedy, highlighted the stupidity of people with prejudices. Audiences could laugh at these characters making utter fools of themselves with their nonsense attitudes.

1:56:15 Mike gives his view on Women's Lib "it'll die a nasty death" and in 2019/22 where transgender men are winning gold medals in women's sport its not dying a nasty death, it's become its own worst enemy and lives on like the walking dead. The "movement" has moved those in the "fight" has painted women into such a tight corner that if they complain, it gets worse. Well done girls, you've only yourselves to blame.
