The alternative is what I used to do, protecting companies from having their intellectual property stolen. Sweeping properties for listening devices, surveillance and providing personal protection to the C-level staff. That type of service pays fairly well too. The other reason I brought this up is that some individuals may not be inclined to work for the "dark side." (Sorry, I had to chuckle while I typed that sentence.) Be safe!
