Victor (Johnny Depp) and Victoria's (Emily Watson) families have arranged their marriage. Though they like each other, Victor is nervous about the ceremony. While he's in a forest practicing his lines for the wedding, a tree branch becomes a hand that drags him to the land of the dead. It belongs to Emily, who was murdered after eloping with her love and wants to marry Victor. Victor must get back aboveground before Victoria marries the villainous Barkis Bittern (Richard E. Grant).

Fun fact: This was Johnny Depp's first time voice acting in a theatrical film. Also, music composer Danny Elfman originally wrote the part of the character Bonejangles, as he was looking for another musician to sing it, but after failing to find a voice that fit, Tim Burton asked Elfman if he would sing it. The result was so brutal on his vocal chords that he was left hoarse whenever he had to voice the character.

Emily was so selfless, she gave up her "happy ending" so Victoria could live on the rest of her life with someone she loved. I'm convinced Emily realized that Victor was keen on marrying her only because he thought he had lost Victoria- I definitely think Emily was the best choice though- so kind-hearted and funny, she deserved better!

Fun fact: the stop motion animation in this film is so good, some people thought it was actually CGI. And Tim Burton was so offended by this, when he made his next stop motion film, he actually held back ON PURPOSE so people could still tell that it was stop motion animation.

His parents always were mean to him, the girl he fell for got married to someone else, so from his view in the land of dead he has his dog scraps, his friend the carriage driver and a girl who loves him

This is definitely a good stop motion classic. I mean, it does have Tim Burton’s classic tropes all over it. Creepy elements, dark humor, and of course the actors he usually picked; Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter. It’s a nice movie to put on whenever October comes.

10:24 And remember the plan was to elope, there's the line: "They told not a soul, kept the whole thing tight." So her family doesn't know Emily's dead,(chances are nobody from wherever she was from does) probably think she's still out there, having run off to marry some stranger they disproved of, with their family jewels/some of their gold now missing. Not only that, but that's the last that Emily ever sees of her family after that.

Real quick: you know the tradition about it being bad luck for the bride and groom to see each other before the ceremony on their wedding day? It goes all the way back to arranged marriages like this one, when the norm was the bride and groom literally weren’t allowed to even meet each other before the ceremony. The beliefs was if they did, they would back out.

2:27 Victor's family, the Van Dorts, are "nouveau riche," meaning they're new money. They're fish merchants who came into a LOT of money recently, which is why Victor's parents are unclassy/tacky compared to Victoria's parents. Victor's mother wears a tacky fur stole while the Everglots don't wear that kind of clothes. Victor's parents speak loudly and try to use a posh accent to seem like they know about luxurious homes/items when they enter the Everglot home, but their lack of a filter betrays them. Especially Victor's father, who initially says Victoria's mother is Victoria. Victor's mother has to silence her husband often, because he says stupid things. The Everglots are marrying Victoria to Victor to join their families' wealth, and Victor's family wants to gain the Everglot social status.

I love how even Tim Burton is still a fan of classic Hollywood figures. He had horror great Vincent Price in his movie Edward Scissorhands and Peter Lorre (albeit a caricature) as a maggot living in Emily’s head.

Victory had so much more chemistry with Emily. With Victoria it was just more of a kindred spirits kind of things, where they just settled for each other practically by default. Really they felt more like siblings, but with Emily there felt like a real connection. He even admits that under different circumstances they could be something.

Oh good, I thought I was the only one who felt this. Maybe it was because Victor had more screentime with Emily, but it felt like they made more sense. Victor only had about three moments with Victoria(one of which was the rehearsal), but I dunno, thought Emily made more sense.

Voila exactement ce qu'il me fallait pour me consoler apres avoir appris la mort de Liam Payne 😢 À en juger par l'état de son corps, Emily doit être morte depuis un an ou deux sauf si le froid l'a bien conservée. Par contre, je ne pense pas qu'elle aime vraiment Victor mais aime juste l'idée d'être mariée. Après tout, c'était ce dont rêvaient les jeunes filles à cette époque. J'aime penser que Victor et Victoria ont, plus tard, une fille et l'ont appelée Emily. J'ai vu des photos du tournage du film sur Faceebook. Les marionnette sont plus grandes que ce que je croyais (presque autant que des poupées Barbie, je crois). Si je ne me trompe pas, elles sont faites en argile ou une sorte de pâte à modeler

Another movie that traumatized me. I remember back then at school for Halloween,they would put this movie on and during the first few seconds of it,I was so scared I cried and the teacher had to turn off the movie because of this,which made her switch for Charlie and The Chocolate Factory instead. Ever since I have PTSD from Corpse Bride. I couldn't even watch it. Yet here I am,commenting.
