Correct HLG3 CST Settings in Davinci Resolve Tutorial

You should explain to people that the input color space varies depending on what you set in camera. I use bt.2020, so your input color space would be wrong. I also recommend bt.2020, it's a much larger colorspace, although for 8 bit it's not that big of a deal. Some say that bt.2020 will increase banding over 709, but I have not seen that.

When using bt.2020 as input color space and "Cineon Film Log" as output gamme to use a next serial node with Kodak film lut, then the colors look very strong, like blown out blues etc. How do you solve this?

@@JLNSTCK depends. I go input space and gamma to Davinci, then through my grade, then Davinci to whatever output I want (film luts or just rec709). No issues.

Man you are the goat . I bought the A7iii cause the A7IV was too expensive as I am a drone pilot and my drone gear in the last years costed me as much as 3x A7siii. I love the A7iii but always everyone talking about the fact it is only 8bit and honestly their footage with 10 bit cameras is not even that good or most of the people that bash on 8bit or A7iii cant use their gear properly or they do pay to win and think that spending 5k on some camera will make their footage look better. Then I have discovered your channel and your professional videos I really thank you for all the work you did and even though I have seen you own a newer camera already you still make new videos focused on the A7iii. You are the living proof that expensive gear is not what will give you the best results. Appreciate you man

Hey man, firstly this made our day! We’ve tried to showcase over the last year that you can create good imagery from the A7iii and we’re glad a lot of people have held off upgrading because they realised how much more out of their A7iii they can get. It’s great to see! We’re loving the A7siii but we still use the A7iii a lot as a B can and secondary camera when on set. Eventhough we use color mode-709 in PictureProfile settings in a7iii we still choose rec2100 HLG as input gamma???(correct me if am wrong) i am currently using your exact HLG3 pp on my a7iii just asking can we use slog-2 or Slog-3 on sony a7siii for low light or its just as it is like a7iii??? what gamma should be chosen between rec.709 and bt.2020. I used bt.2020 in the camera settings and the results tend to be reddish. But if I choose the hlg3 with rec.709 gamma and the result its look more natural than bt 2020

Question, why is the input colors space Rec709. HLG is BT.2100/Rec2020, so to my information this is the input color space as well, or do I miss something, Cheers Harold

Hey to answer your questions: 1. Because we work on a mac, both our Timeline and output color space is set to Rec.709A 2. The input color space will always be Rec.709 (unless chosen otherwise). HLG is the color gamma, and we selected that as the input gamma as that's what we used

It doesn’t have less DR but it’s more prone to breaking up, especially if you’re shooting underexposed with lots of shadows

Nice. I think this helped. Looking for DaVinci grading of DJI Mavic 3 HLG. Not dlog. Most will disagree, I don't see the advantage of full dlog. Just not worth the effort. It still looks too flat. With the Mavic 3 it starts with ISO 400. The HLG may be the best compromise. The rec 709 and rec 2010 HLG was what I was looking for.

so for the cinefilm or cineprint I can use either the sony slog2 if shot with slog2 picture profile (PP) and I put Rec2100. hlg if I use the picture profile for the clip in camera profile hlg3

Here's what I don't get... HLG1, HLG2, and HLG3 are all different corves. Why don't they have different transforms??? Scene is actually a different curve too. You're applying one curve to different inputs which doesn't make since to me... Now maybe one of those transforms compresses the footage enough for it to be graded more accurately??? My problem is I have several different cameras in my photoshoots and I need the transform to be more specific than just close enough.
