When picking up a heavy object, The main thing is not to let the shoulder joints hang forward (shift anteriorly). Using the muscles of the back, keeping the shoulder girdle stable with a neutral scapula is ideal. Sometimes, it is taught to retract or squeeze the shoulder blades together, but I believe that is trying to protect the joint by overcompensating.
