Guys like this in prison are the most protected also. When I was doing time we had a guard like this. If other inmates disrespect him,or try to tell on him that he was looking out for us. They would get handle. If it was problems. We would not listen to other guards, but that one cool guard could calm everyone down, and stop a lot of stuff from happening just out of pure respect we had for him.

The Sargent and better always had their phones in Va. prisons, the officers didn’t. I did a ten year stretch in Va. but we had CD players and eventually digital players that you could download music, private server emails and games, like a converted cellphone, and in some jails you can call out on them, everything is still recorded and you have to pay but we can get music in the jails too.

I dealt with the same shit! I retired from the military at the age of 30, so I needed to find something to do. So I decided to become a correctional officer, and try to help better these men, and women who are caged up. Those people have already been to trial, and sentencing, so I’m just here to keep it as orderly as possible, and as safe as possible, while I’m there. All you do is babysit, and make sure those in your dorm/pod, go to their classes, appointments, etc. I had coworkers who would talk shit about me to inmates, and those inmates would come tell me. The easiest way to get along with inmates is doing your job. Unfortunately there are some lazy officers who don’t do shit while they’re at work. So the inmates would look out for me because I actually did my job, that’s all! You mentioned roaches with the food. The roaches were so bad in 12 building which was only adseg, where we had close custody, CMI (chronic mentally ill) which was those who have been in adseg for longer than 10 years. They’re in their cell for 23 hours a day, so we would have to grab the food carts and feed thru the tray slot. By the time we got the food out the cart, it was covered with roaches! Just a disgusting situation for the inmates because they’re still humans. I got all kinds of stories for ya Herc

I totally agree with the CO about treating inmates like humans. I was usually made fun of, "Hey D, you still huggin-thugs?" I was once ridiculed by my coworkers because I helped an inmate get another jumpsuit because he $hit (diarrhea'd) himself. I was not about to have this fool get a rash or even more sick. I was actually given the unforgettable name of "Convict-boss."

Being a former Jail officer, this man is on point. If you treat people as human beings and draw a line that they know you will not cross easiest job on earth. Bad part about it is you have to watch the staff and your co-workers more than the inmates. He is so right about the lazy officers and dirty officers he spoke on is true. During my 10 years working in LE I've seen 4 officers caught and arrested. Thank you for explaining it brother.
