Retired nurse, graduated in 1971, worked in orthopedics, cardiology medsurg. It was another world and has through the years changed so much. Now I'm a patient in a rehab facility waiting for a opening in a assisted living center..... being a patent is a far more difficult than being a nurse.

I am retired now,but 20 years ago I worked in a prison,as a RN.We always had 2 prison orderlies.I gave them each a pick of cigarettes, because I was scared of the convicts. When I worked in the hospital on psych.I always carried cigarettes,in case I had a young male patient who could beat me up.I learned this when I was a young army medic. We had a psychiatrist who was a veteran who did the same thing.Bad nursing, but I was never assaulted.

I lasted 3 hours in a jail. I left during my lunch hour and never went back. I called the agency and told them I absolutely could not go back there. It was the county jail. I worked in a prison and that wasn't even close to what I had experienced working in the jail. The prison nurse job was quieter and med pass focused. Every now and then there were inmate fights and they had to be assessed and taken care of. The sick pods were run like small hospitals. I did a code and saved an inmates life as he had ODed. Saved his life and he hated me after that as his sentence was 28 years.

@@MsGeminiFromCA I was the pharmacy nurse. At the time I was an LPN. My job was the day time need pass (basically giving insulin before lunch) and I was responsible for ordering all of the meds for the inmates on my side of the prison as well as keeping the pharmacy stocked with meds and supplies. I also helped the docs, PAs, and NPs with any questions as well as helping the RNs in the clinic (a lot of them were new and didn't have a lot of skills). I would also float and help in the infirmary.

Correction nursing is amazing!! Different environment but inmates are generally appreciative but sometimes very disrespectful. Nurses get institutionalized to jail nursing. Such telling ppl I’m nurse (insert last name) no first names in jail. Getting out of the habit of calling patients “baby sweetie honey” inmates will take it differently lol. If you don’t have thick skin stay home. Inmates call out every insecurity you know you have and somebyou didn’t know you had lol. If you’re sensitive to big forehead, big nose, bald spots, acne, overweight, body shape, stay home lol. They can be savage with their words but most respect you when you get them back on their level. It’s fun but ALWAY LS be mindful your patients are inmates.

i felt safe during my public health clinical nursing rotation in a jail and also saw that most people there appreciated the help. as i am a large man, it surprised me to see how many inmates felt intimidated by me. many thought I was a strong arm enforcer for medication compliance despite my being completely hands off as an observer. shockingly, the need for more healthcare provider help from dentists was a huge need as oral infections ran rampant + ended up being my research asignment in obtaining a bsn degree. i hope they got the help they needed and anyone incarcerated would turn their lives around for the better.

@@shanezwack187 if you’re a woman, wear a scrub jacket, no pastel colors. I avoid super feminine colors such as pinks purples. I don’t wear my “cute” scrubs there. Keep in my mind these are men who are locked so they like to look and may be inclined to touch. Don’t give them a reason to. ALWAYS wear gloves with pt care. If someone says “nurse look” do not look. More than likely it’s a penis waiting for you to see it in all its glory lol. If they flash you (jacking off), personally I don’t react. They enjoy attention, positive or negative. Inmates will offer you ways to make extra income. One inmate told me insulin needles go for $500. Do not fall for anything. They compliment everything, new shoes, new nail color, changed hair style, I don’t even wear perfume, just my washing powder and deodorant (they still tell me how good I smell). They component everybody so don’t feel special. Do not get your validation from them. A lot of these guys are manipulators, not all, so they are trying to see how far they can get you to go. Be firm and establish your boundaries early on. My favorite line “that’s inappropriate.” Funny story: a inmate told I was so beautiful and he was going to buy me a helicopter. I have yet to see my helicopter lol. Corrections is definitely like no other. I have turned to enter info for a pt ekg to look up and see him jacking off. So always be aware, be observant, be safe, but most of all, still be a nurse. I hope this long message as helpful.

I worked in LTC and now I am a Corrections Nurse. Huge Difference working in a Federal Prison than a county jail. 12 patients to 1 Nurse....I wish. Not saying her job is easy by any means! In a Federal Correctional facility you are paid Federal Wages and Benefits. They Definitely help with any education going forward. Definitely a challenge at first, especially for a Nurse with a year of experience. I’m still learning and like any job their is that dreaded learning Curve. But there is a huge need for Corrections Nurses. Sounds Scary, it’s actually not at all. Downside at a Federal Prison- Endless Paperwork. But other than that I think it’s 1000 times better than long term care and you definitely use more nursing skills as a Corrections officer and have more independence.

Things like this I do not agree with in correctional nursing. Actually a nurse was convicted just here recently this month because of a situation where an inmate couldn’t breathe and the guards would not allow the nurse to do her job until they thought it was “safe”. Ultimately the patient died and it fell on the nurse (as it always does)

Awesome Video!! Thank You; I am an RN with about 15 years of experience in other areas. I put a resume out for a correctional facility position, and I think I'm going to go for the interview and at least check it out!! It sounds interesting, and no matter who the patient is and what they have done to themselves or others, they still need and deserve our care, right? At least the correctional patients can't get away with screaming at us...and no family members to deal with, right?

Loved this video and all of the information presented here. What a great insight to something I never would have considered. Lindsey if you come across this question, are you in the unit with an RN or is everyone else there LPN like you? I’m an LPN student in my last semester and I would be so nervous to go straight into a field where you need to know pretty much all the information you learned in school at once. Thank you for this! You guys rock!!!!

@@SkinColourVictim I am still currently working there. I'm not full time at the moment; PRN for now. They offered PRN nurses an extra $150 per shift that you picked up. Full time gets the same amount but only after you work your 40 hours. I still like there being a nurse there. I just wanted to keep up with my clinical skills so I got a job at a nursing home too. Honestly, we were are short staffed a lot on 2nd shift, so it put a lot on me and 1 other nurse. some of the officers there are not as smart as they look. We really have to work around them and their time. If you get a chance try it out.

Hi Blake, I love Mental Health Nursing! I have also worked in Department of Corrections as the nurse & Nurse Supervisor in the Mental Health Unit. I previously worked at a State Mental Hospital, Department of Juvenile Justice (basically a children's corrections unit). I also worked as a state surveyor in Florida at The Agency for HealthCare Administration (AHCA) sort of like JACHO but for the state. I got MSN in Nursing Education and love, love, love teaching! If you would ever like to know more about those jobs... reach out.

Justine G I thought the same too about having the need for a 1 year experience but I was interviewed this week and was offered a job at a correctional facility. I’m not sure maybe because I have worked as a CNA a few years ago at a state prison that’s why they took the chance on me being newly licensed. Right now, I’m just trying to see what duties do corrections nurses have compared to a long term care facilities/hospitals? What are things do doctors, nurses, psychiatrists, and the whole team collaborate on?
