How to correctly check the transmission fluid level | Toyota Highlander

I've got the 3.3L 3MZ engine. I changed to a new radiator and lost transmission fluid. Don't really know how much as the workshop also didn't kept an eye and worst thing is that they didn't even top up. While driving on the motorway now it doesn't shift to 5th gear resulting in higher RPM at 3500 on 4th gear. Also it shifts directly from1st to 3rd gear ⚙️ skipping 2nd gear. Like your video shows, when hot the fluid dropped. How much fluid should I top up if the fluid is like this level on the dipstick. Should I also put it in reverse gear and check the fluid then as it is a common practice here. Thanks

Not sure about your engine. My procedure is for 2GR-FE. Park the car overnight, check the fluid level in the morning with engine OFF. The level should be one inch higher than the HOT mark. If its less, add ATF WS and bring level up. This is the simplest way. Once done, then start the engine, wait for one minute and check fluid level, it should be at the cold level. If you use any other fluid than Toyota's own fluid ATS WF, you may face transmission issues.

Thanks. Very helpful. I like the cold method not running - since there's a temperature interval for "warmed up". Also, I assume your car is level? Just curious if you put a level in a few spots to confirm. Mine sitting over night is about halfway between top of hot and the WS, so just a tad lower than yours. It's about 80F out. Thinking i am a tiny bit low.

Most welcome. I also like the cold method. The car was almost level, maybe 2 degree or so incline of a garage floor. A few degrees here & there shouldn't matter because the dipstick has a very large range for normal level. Mine is around 77k miles, will drain & fill it in the coming days as I can hear a very slight whine at certain speeds/load, its a FWD not 4WD and replace the radiator coolant too.

@@akhaqan Transmission is 5 or 6? If on cold transmission you start the engine and shift to P -> D -> R -> P, will the level be even less?

@@kovalenkoihor4325 Sorry about the long delay, missed this message. Its a 5 speed. I don't think the level will drop further even if you cycle through the gears. You can confirm correct level in two ways, first after overnight park and then check in the morning without starting and compare to my video level, then start and check again for level between the cold marks.

@@akhaqan thanks. Yes, I've moved on. But it's good that you written. Do you know how to correctly check the cylinders pressure? I will be changing sparks and want to as well check the pressure, have the device to do it, but want to do it one by one, so at every given moment there will be 5 sparks in and 1 spark out (it's dirty engine, don't want all 6 cylinders to be wide opened to all the crap ). So probably I need to remove some relays or something to prevent other 5 sparking and prevent fuel to go inside cylinders, when I will be rotating engine by starter.

@@kovalenkoihor4325 It's easy. Disable the EFI pump by removing the relay (kzbin.info/www/bejne/faOrm4OJZZKVl9U I did for my Camry, it would be similar). Then when you remove a plug for replacing, check the compression as you go along all plugs.

Not for off roading at all, it can handle almost everything thrown at it on paved roads.

@@AR-uj3js A lot will depend on your tires whether 4wd or FWD, get tires that perform good in snow/ice

My 2014 doesn't come with a dipstick for the transmission fluid. I can't even check it.

These are the sealed WS type transmissions, you can replace fluid even in these ones, a little hectic but can be done

I got the same toyota highlander 2013 limited. I just changed the fluids and spark plugs But i didnt change the transmission filter bcoz the mechanic said if you change the filter it will damage the transmission is it true? Please help ?

When your car is running the oil level on dip stick level is still way under hot indicator. Is the oil level too low?

Different cars have different procedure for checking transmission oil, for this Highlander it has to be with engine running, anywhere between the upper & lower marks is ok.

@@Tom-gr9ii When the temperature gauge in the car shows normal operating temperature i.e. the needle is horizontal, then you should check the transmission fluid.
