@samiraperi4675 жыл бұрын
I'd use RAID 5 or 6 on Linux. Cheap.
@gnif5 жыл бұрын
@@samiraperi467 You would think, until you actually get a drive failure, and the rebuild process takes out a 2nd drive because they are all as old as each other. Running RAID 0 is just plain stupid, RAID 5/6, better but not great, RAID 10 (or technically 1+0), the way to go. However for a studio where fast access is a requirement and the cost of SAS disks is quite affordable in comparison with the $50K cameras, a decent server with enough ECC ram and disks to run a ZFS array would be optimal.
@williameldridge93825 жыл бұрын
@@gnif ZFS is very resource intensive and you using more than 50% of your total capacity is EXTREMELY ill advised. Add to that the fact that you can't add a drive to a VDEV, and you need to create a new VDEV every time you expand your storage, and then include more drives for parity in that VDEV. ZFS is an extremely expensive system to implement and the advantages of it aren't worth the cost very often unless you are using a small singular server that you never need to expand the storage on, otherwise you experience diminishing returns. Unraid would be a much better option for their use-case and it doesn't run the risk of secondary drive failures like RAID or the ridiculous overhead of ZFS.
@FilthTribeFTP5 жыл бұрын
RAID is NOT a backup solution. Its great for redundancy and reducing downtime, but it should NOT be a main backup solution. Its simply for hard drive failure. You can't protect against malware, data corruption or data deletion. You ALWAYS backup to a separate device (like a NAS) and then off-site (cloud).

lux No there is not. But you don't need Windows when there is FreeNAS and SAMBA shares.
@thriceasright7 жыл бұрын
Sure, they could run a different OS on the server, but then they'd have to learn to use and to troubleshoot it. Since apparently they don't have a dedicated sysadmin, that's some pretty big overhead for such a small company, and probably not worth their time.
@JonathanWash7 жыл бұрын
I agree they don't have a dedicated support person hence why I suggested FreeNAS as it's really easy to setup, run, and troubleshoot. Even with people that know how to run native ZFS on FreeBSD would recommend FreeNAS for small businesses for that reason.

It seems weird to hear you worrying about a single drive failing in a RAID. What kind of RAID are you guys using? In a RAID 6, two seperate drives have to fail to cause data loss. The better version of RAID would be ZFS, which tends to be faster and more reliable. It also has things like checking data integrity. Since your work depends on it, I'd op to get a ZFS setup going. Maybe LinusTechTips can help you with that :D.

Most likely RAID 0. As a rule of thumb, if someone talk about their raid and does not mention a number assume it's the worse choice possible.

RAID 0 is cool if your are not a fucktard without redundancy
@minscwithboo7 жыл бұрын
I hate to nitpick but RAID 6 has the ability to have 2 drives fail with no issue but 3 dives fail and you are SOL. I think they are trying to do is to maximize storage. RAID 5 has a storage efficiency of 1-(1/# of drives) at min of 3 drives it is 66.667% so 3 1TB drives you would have 2TB of storage with single fail protection. RAID 6 is 1-(2/# of drives) at min 4 dives it is 50% so 4 1TB drives would have the same 2TB of storage with dual fail protection.

A RAID is exactly what you use to prevent all your work from disappearing with the faulty drive, you just may use the wrong type of RAID. What you what you want is probably a RAID 10 which is quite a bit of security and the possibility to hot-swap faulty drives (just take them out and stick the next one in without losing any data). You probably want to look at least into RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5 and RAID 10 to really understand what they mean and need, those are the most common. You probably also want a dedicated RAID controller for everything to perform as fast as it could be if you don't have one already. Feel free to ask if you have questions, but probably someone already wrote all of this or Spencer told you already, I was to lazy to read all comments :D

It just isn't seen as commonly on things like TV or movies do to the ratings they would receive otherwise for the language used. Personally, I don't swear. But I do not agree with what KZbin is doing, as it is a personal choice and up to each KZbinr to decide what kind of audience they want. For channels that swear more heavily it generally is a slightly more mature audience, depending upon how you want to define the word maturity...

I know this is an old vid, but I was just randomly watching stuff XD" I just wanted to say - in case of alternative swear/curse words, this is actually something that kindergarden and grade school teachers do. They use safe or funny words/phrases that still help with venting their immediate frustration (something we use curse words for), but are harmless when caught up by kids (which tend to catch up curse words pretty easily...). My mom used to do this while she worked in kindergarden, she used really funny phrases ;D Sorry, I won't share those, since they're in Polish (so they will surely sound nonsense for non-Polish-speakers), but in general this strategy works really well.

The diy systems he uses and creates make for entertaining videos but are definitly nothing i would call stable. For example his diy Whonnock storage system lasted only for a half a year before the first major crash. I haven't had one in 13 years. To get a stable system, you use tried and tested not the latest and greatest.

Why aren't you using cloud archiving yet? Just use a local server for current projects and send archival files to the cloud and make backup their responsibility.
@willpow19937 жыл бұрын
Probably because it's crazy expensive when you're looking at large amounts of storage (10s of terabytes). Cloud backups are great for admin documents and the like but in a media creation company the price per GB makes the TB of data they'd need to upload on a regular basis stupidly expensive to do.

My little sister is starting her sophomore year in college, and ever since high school she has been passionate about the Best Buddies program we have here in our hometown. The amazing thing about this organization is it provides these amazing people with new friends, it gives them a chance to interact with people outside of their family, and it shows them that life is a fun and beautiful thing, filled with new experiences and loving friendships. I’m proud of my sister, and what she is doing. She has recently been recognized for her endeavors with Best Buddies, and is being nominated for ‘Champion of the Year’ because of the amazing relationship her and her buddy have cultivated.
