So I did a little googling and the "F.R.P." on the hammer with the anchor is the logo for "Fayette R. Plumb, Inc.", the company that made the hammer. (It's a Nevada Pattern Sledge Hammer.) I believe the company was incorporated in 1899 so it's probably from not too long after that seeing as it's the most primitive version of the logo that I could find.

They have had VR for archaeological sites for awhile now, since we had good 3d cameras. Really just needed the applications to stitch it all together and make it look good for the common man. This takes it up a notch but without VFX artist to incorporate into something like Unreal still just any new breakthrough. They have had Stonehenge and Shackleton's hut up in VR on KZbin for many years and I am sure there is many more of which I am sure quite a few are proprietary. May Favorite one is where David Attenborough walk alongside dinosaurs and you can really get the scale as you move around to see the size compared to David.

As someone who works in scanning I can tell you this stuff is already being done for museums from ancient buildings to even people. It pretty cool.

I used to work for a company that 3D scans buildings and infrastructure, with the goal of using these scans for creating accurate plans for construction and remodelling. We also scanned some bronze statues so if they got stolen, there was a digital copy that could be used to cast new statues. I can tell you that photogrammetry is NOT the way to go to create accurate copies of buildings. This video already shows that a lot of artifacts show up, and that geometry of objects gets very chunky, as shown on the hinge wheel that does not look round or the mineshaft model that shows all the shapes blending together. Lidar is the way to go, but not the lidar that is present on mobile phones, it is not accurate enough. Sure, it looks like it worked fine in the mines, but if you were to go round in a circle you would find the ends would not meet up. You need stationary scanners like Faro Focus or Riegl Vz400i for this. Using these scanners you can get extremely accurate representations, and you can map entire buildings or mineshafts, and the geometry will always match up. Long story short, photogrammetry is cool for smaller projects that don't require that much accuracy, but if you need the actual geometry data to make digital copies, high-end Lidar is the only way to go.

I work for a lidar and full body capture company and we were talking only a couple weeks ago about how inaccurate the ipad/iPhone scan stuff is. So much is hidden by the textures but its sooooo blocky. We use Leica scanners and nothing can beat out proper lidar scanners at the moment.

I'm sure either option would be better than what they are doing, but they would also cost more than is likely affordable. Polycam uses hardware almost everyone has. This will allow for them to crowdsource having more and more objects scanned. An imperfect and rough scan is better than no scan at all.

to be fair to Polywhatever, photogrammetry improves with more data, but the bottle neck is the matching/rectification process and backprojection which scales quadratically on the number of photos anyway. So long as they're willing to put in the manual annotation effort to 'finish' the result, they're making the right call between cost of hardware etc and final quality.

It is so amazing that we have reached a point in developing technology that we can use our phones to 3D scan places. Taking photos was so cool just 15 years or so ago, and now this. As a teacher I'm amazed by the fact that we can potentially do excursions to museums or foreign towns with our students to show them different places of the world. Combine them with videos and photos and we have the future of education at hand.

So glad i found this video. 1st i love old western stuff like this. And the scanning and mapping you offer 8s awesome. There's a old railroad bridge that has been unused for decades. But sits along 2 major state funded trails. The D&L (Delaware and Lehigh Valley) and the ironton rail trail. The bridge is mostly intact but 1 of the riverborne pillars holding it up is falling apart. I really want to start a proper fundraiser to repair it. Here's my reason. Even today alot of people walk across the trestle. It actually connects 2 parts of the D&L the section that's in Northampton PA and the section in Coplay PA. I actually want to turn the trestle into a footbridge. Set it on top of the rails and ties to preserve them. Put a plexiglass floor so it's a safe crossing with rails button can look down and see the tracks and bridge. It will save the trestle and connect 2 parts of a trail across an almost 2000ft long bridge over the Lehigh River. I just dont know where or how to start. I have lots of footage on my channel here and tons more on SD cards. Keep up the amazing work you guys do.

I do professional 3D scanning for construction/As-builts, and if we were to scan that whole place with our terrestrial/mobile lidar scanners (inside and out in color). I would say it would be somewhere between 1 to 3 terrabytes of data.

@@TiagoTiagoT I'm talking more about making a 3D point cloud of the place, not photogrammetry. Only using pictures to apply color to the scan points. So after all the scans are registered without cleaning, I would say around 1-3 terrabytes depending on the resolution and density you want. Although you can make a mesh from point cloud, we don't really do that because we need the real data with exact points.

That 3D tunnel map is extremely exciting to see. I went down the "tunnel expedition" rabbithole last year after YT kept suggesting it and one thing I really wanted to see was a map of the locations to get a true sense of scale but a lot of these places weren't mapped at all. Genuinely pumped for a new wave of exploration to pop up in the coming years where these utterly insane abandoned shafts get a 3D map to truly help me grasp the magnitude of these claustrophobia inducing tunnels.

Once, I scanned a aktiv mine in Germany, with a 3d Rigel laser scanner, an an automated robotic platform, made the scan every night. After a year we had a Timelapse of the movement of the mine. In the time of a yaer it got about 3 meters (10feet) longer und shorter, it was breathing. Got that point cloud with a 3 millimeter accuracy 😅

Wow I can't believe you put Brent under wildlife :D But honestly this turned out great and I hope there will be a way to view these scans in VR! I know things like Sketchf*b work really well with Ste*mVR so it should be possible to do the same here! And I love the idea of 3d scanning as a means of historical preservation. Honestly this should be a common practice by now - the Notre-Dame fire is a perfect example that no building is safe. Also there are historical buildings that aren't being maintained because of low interest and not enough funds - I remember Tom Scott's video about St Peter's Seminary which is now a poorly maintained ruin that's only getting worse and more dangerous. And IMO that's where it should just be thoroughly 3D scanned with as much detail as possible and then promptly torn down. I know it sounds bad, but the building is slowly coming apart on it's own in a way that is dangerous to occasional visitors (mostly graffiti artists and graffiti 'artists'). This would solve the problem of a dangerous property that has to have some level of security maintained to keep people out, as well as it would open the space for other things. And meanwhile the 3D scan would perfectly preserve it without further decay and if sometime in the future someone decided the building should be restored it could be rebuild almost 1:1 from the scan. And mind you the building I'm talking about is not some ancient temple, it's a seminary from the 1960's. And there are probably numerous examples like that across the world.

Dude, imagine a computer game where instead of the same assets being used over and over, with the same feeling caves with the same design, they instead used meshes from something like this. Literally going into a real unique environment would bring a whole new type of experience. Instead of just going in for some loot or whatever, it was so interesting that you went in and could just explore for exploration sake. Literally get that same feeling of amazement, rather than a grinding monotonous cycle.

As someone who writes historical fiction, this is such an incredibly valuable resource! The only thing comparable to this is visiting a physical museum and hoping that they have the artifact you're looking for. A worldwide repository of scans like this is going to change a lot of research processes for historical work. Fantastic video!!

the really amazing thing is that you should be able to take those scans, and put them into blender, export them as an STL and 3d print the awesome artifacts and hold them physically in your hand. with something like a resin printer, the detail would be astronomical.

Until you realized that the details are in the texture rather than the mesh, and when 3D printed it's just a low poly blob of something. 3D printing is always shade flat and no texture.

@@awareqwx It's not that current technology doesn't allow that, but simply it's way more expensive than what's available to regular consumers, and the kind of PC needed to handle the data is also rather expensive. Also I'm mostly just talking about the models shown in the video which is definitely mainly for 3D renderings (thus much less detailed in mesh than say a CAD model), but the capability of either photogrammertry or LiDAR aren't going to be good enough to replicate semi-perfectly anyway. Laser scanning is likely still needed and that's rather expensive.

This is some amazing technology to have in our pockets, considering when I was a kid my gameboy's screen didnt even have lights in it sometimes I feel like I've time travelled. The next step be to find a way for multiple phones/devices to simultaneously work on the same scan, even if its just a way to set a slave device you can strap to a mount so you're getting a second angle while you walk to reduce scan times

So cool seeing the Crew with GTL! This all is so amazing, beyond words! Seeing what can be done with the Polycam tech has me thinking a few things: 1. On-line retailers should be using this for their product images! 2. Tourist attractions of all kinds need to take advantage of this for "virtual visits.' Even if I have to pay a small "admission fee," there are a lot of places that this is the closest I'll ever get! 3. Kinda repeating #2, but, museums, specifically, need to digitize their exhibits and artifacts! Imagine being able to virtually pick up and closely examine the various pieces in the Smithsonian, for example! 4. Books!!! I know there has been an effort to digitize as many books as possible, but, imagine this! Being able to flip through an original illuminated manuscript from way back when!!! 5. Well, there is another use I can maybe think of, but, I'll leave that one to people's imaginations! Shouldn't be too difficult to figure out; after all, that's what the internet is for...!
