It's been confirmed by several Navy pilots, that Tom Cruise was in the backseat of the 2-passenger Hornet. They were able to tell right away based on the front view, from where he was sitting, versus the proximity to where the wings began. So to support what most comments were saying, Cruise was never in control of the aircraft.

I was very skeptical of that when they were talking about it. From my small knowledge of Jets, I was like there’s no way in hell the US navy would let Tom Cruise fly one of their Jets. He was just passenger like the blue angels do at their air shows.

A cool piece of trivia about that Cliffhanger scene is that it took them so long to set up the shot to do the stunt, that they ended up flying over a desert when he goes between the planes. The background was replaced digitally in post production by Digital Domain, who had background plates of the snowy forests and mountains. They had to do it frame by frame because that had never been done before and digital mattes were not as commonplace in 1997. It's actually on the DVD of the movie as an extra feature.

Of note, Tom Cruise isn't actually controlling the aircraft in any way in any of those shots. The aircaft used, the F/A-18F, does not have any pilot controls in the rear seat (where the actors are sitting). All flying is being done by the pilots, not the actors, they are simply along for the ride (pretending to fly).

I was on the Theodore Roosevelt when they were shooting Top Gun. I was part of the ship's Safety department, and stayed with the film crew throughout their time on the ship. Tom Cruise DID NOT fly a jet off of our deck. He was in the back seat of one of our Super Hornets while an active duty Navy Pilot flew the plane. Tom was allowed control to do some maneuvering while in the air, but nothing to the degree that is being described in this video. These scenes are all with Tom in the back, trying his best not to pass out while one of our boys enjoys another day in the office.

So many stunts in this movie it's mind blowing... Everything is recorded in the first person - the movie is seen entirely from the MC's perspective, like a first person shooter. In a section of this documentary that featured outtakes the narrator said that for one particular shot in this fight scene Jackie did 100s or maybe even 1000s of takes. The shot is where he successfully kicks the fan from either the floor or his foot into his hand. I also seem to remember Jackie was so relieved once the take was over, it was like he had just crossed a finish line after a marathon.

I'm a big fan of action movies/ martial arts films--basically any time stuff is blowing up and people are getting punched I'm there. I never watch them critically, though I just enjoy it for what it is. These videos have really given me an appreciation for all the work and skill that goes into pulling off these effects and stunts and now when I watch these movies I pay more attention to all that. thanks!

I remember way back when in the 80s watching some of the early "behind the scenes" type shows, when the stuntmen talked about Hooper. They said it was being kind to the way stuntmen were treated, and also that the old-time stuntmen would have no trouble doing those kind of things because they were legit nuts at times, and their egos wouldn't let them say "no" in front of other people. The smokestack falling just behind the Firebird was a 1-time opportunity: everyone knew there could be no 2nd take.

A friend of mine worked on the film Death Train / Detanator (1993), and he tells some hair-raising stories of the producers pressuring the Eastern European crew into some dicey things which would not be allowed on a bigger production, including putting an actor in the right seat in the cockpit of a large police/military helicopter and then flying it down between trees behind a train. He says the pilot (who was not a stunt pilot, but on loan from the police with the helicopter) was sweating bullets.

He never actually piloted the jet, even though he is a pilot and can easily afford to pay for a hornet if anything went wrong but the navy flat out said no out of principal. All the shots in the film are either on the ground with him not flying or in the backseat of a two seat variant (F model) that does not have any flight controls for up in the air shots. And from a friend who was aboard ship while they were filming said that Tom Cruise was incredibly difficult to work with and most of the crew including the skipper wanted to kick him off but they were ordered straight from the top secnav/CNO to just deal with him since this movie is a big deal for recruitment. The original inspired a whole generation to join up and probably is the most successful recruitment movie ever so if the sequel is half as good, its worth it to put up with Hollywood.
