One thing to note: the reason that trailers for Final Fantasy games look so good is because Square Enix kept the studio that made Spirits Within open and they kept improving. So, the reason that those trailers look like they could be from movies is because they literally could.
@santishorts
@santishorts 2 жыл бұрын
Not completely accurate. Square Pictures, the studio that made Spirits Within, only ever made one other thing and that was the short "Final Flight of The Osiris" for The Animatrix. After that Square Pictures pretty much closed shop. Contrary to popular belief, the studio was not based in Japan, it was based in Hawaii and some of the people there may have moved on to work on (then) Square and thus on some of the Final Fantasy cutscenes of that era (post 2003). But Square Pictures as a studio very much ended probably not long after The Matrix project was done.

Ultimate special effects film, Bram Stoker's Dracula. The whole thing is a love letter to classic film making techniques and anything the could do in camera they did. That miniature of the train with the shadow falling across the journal entry in the foreground blew me away as a kid and still ranks as one of my top 10 miniature shots. They used a combination of miniatures and bigatures to get that. Also Slice of Life, a Blade Runner fan film that looks super legit deserves a look. They used a lot of miniatures and projection for that.

@christphern
@christphern 2 жыл бұрын
@@katevgrady I don’t really agree that they all look CGI, but yes, as far as I know, if they looked like a human ghost, they were an actual person on set. They put LED strips under the costumes to illuminate them, and then CGd to remove the strips and add effects to the ghosts like skeletal structures and distortions (Gertrude for example was a person on set, but then they CGd to distort her face rather than use a mask). Only ghosts like Mayhem, the Slimers, Rowan, and the balloons were fully CG that I’m aware of. Granted most of it could have been done like the old films and had people in suits, but it’s so much easier to do CG for monstrous characters, and allows you to get away from human anatomy a bit easier. Fun side note, the lady Slimer was added to give Robin Shelby, the actress that played Slimer in GB2, a role in the film.

The real time lighting is great but the shadows are what blew me away. They just don't bother re-rendering shadows that don't change in any given frame and that's brilliance in efficiency. Shadows are essentially just the edge and a whatever changes beyond that. Leads to some super jank falloff especially on thinner shadows but I'm sure folks'll figure out ways to address that.

There's actually a number of teams working on improving shadows by combining raytracing and shadow mapping to form a hybrid solution, where only the edges are raytraced (to provide high detail and the potential for multiple layers of shadow casting objects) and the insides are shadow mapped.

my favorite part of Ghostbusters is the fact that nearly every ghost is a dude or a set of dudes in a puppet of the desired ghost and have the blue screen for the background and to get them to look like ghosts they use a plethora of 80s and 90s digital effects to make a puppet look all misty and glowing and semitransparent on screen that's what makes the iconic Ghostbusters so real feeling is that they use zero CGI which was available at the time in the shooting of the movie it's all practical effects that have 80s and 90s digital effects to make puppets look like real ghosts making the movie much more believable cause it looks so real on screen and realism is something you can't fully get with CGI

With CGI its just "yeah, can all be explained by digital black magic" but the old stuff is much more closer to real life and thus its more impressive. (I remember watching an anime a while again with a group of characters literally standing on the wing of a flying aircraft (cuz anime) and one guy was just puffing away at a cigarette, with the smoke casually drifting away) That and, in a live-action film, fast moving air will distort the mic pickup as well as making acting difficult.
