This video just makes me wanna watch Avatar again. It was such a good cartoon! I've been meaning to watch it again. This vid also makes me wanna watch "The Legend of Korra". When it first aired, I watched like 2, maybe 3 episodes but I couldn't get into it. Maybe now I can. I heard it was canceled before airing the last few episodes on TV so they released the rest online. That's cool they didn't leave everyone hanging that actually liked it. Knowing this makes me think it wasn't that good but I still should give it another try.
@nelgluhak67092 жыл бұрын
the legend of korra went through a production hell. from problems at the start where Nickelodeon didn't like the idea of a female lead, to it being planned as a one season show to rapidly get renewed (which ended up with a not as good season 2, and also a change of studio as studio Pierrot took over studio Mir). Then it seemed like season 2 will be its last, but the show suddenly got renewed again for season 3 and 4. Having more time to plan everything out, season 3 and 4 are absolutely fantastic (however, episodes have been shortened for one or two minutes compared to season 1 and 2, which honestly does mean we lose about 12-24 minutes per season). And that was just a taste of what's to come, because despite season 3 being superior to season 2 and season 1, Nickelodeon cut the funding of season 4 in half, which is the reason for the infamous clip episode in season 4 (the creators had no choice; it was either to have people work without getting paid, or for them to get paid properly for the time spent working and save it by making a clip episode). On top of it, the show got moved online. In 2013 and 2014, watching shows online meant lower quality than TV, etc., and most people did not even know about it. Instead, they just thought that the show stopped airing. I hope you gave it a watch, because TLOK is a fantastic show
@pyricpictures45272 жыл бұрын

@michaelwolf86903 жыл бұрын
Don't get me wrong Avatar the Last Airbender was a great series, but it didn't break the ground most people want to think it did. Cartoons aimed at adults with groundbreaking animation and serialized storytelling were around for 20 years before Avatar and really good in the years before Avatar aired. What Avatar did that was exceptional is story control. Historically these epic animations like Robotech or Samurai Jack had a map of where the show was going but none of them knew from season to season if there would be another season of work so writing and even animation quality wasn't very consistent. Avatar sold a story rather than episodes, and that studio commitment allowed them to tell a story exactly how they wanted, retain talent intelligently, even get callbacks for old voice actors. It also got made during this voice acting renaissance where there many many amazing voice actors and studios who were really good at leveraging that talent.

Watching Garden of Words, I had to think "so where's the hot action?" ... Well, maybe not. As you've said, there's a lot of anime where action is NOT the focus, and IMO some of those shows are amongst the most impressive. They're also much rarer, as those sorts of shows are more commonly made as live-action. Makoto Shikai's catalogue and of course some of the lesser-known Ghibli movies (Whispers of the Heart, Ocean Waves) are good examples, but there are also series like Red Garden and Rumbling Hearts.

Hearing them talk about the process of cartoon animation in the west being animated in studio's in the East is SO interesting. I grew up watching shows like Swat Kats, Thunder cats, Captain Planet etc, and over the years through research learned that much of their episodes would be storyboarded here but sent overseas to be animated. I was always fascinated about that back and forth, realizing over time and more research that a lot of the reason was that animation studios in Korea and Japan were able to do a lot more with less. They could push the animation through the use of camera angles and extreme shots. Giving the show a more dynamic and intense feeling. It also looked smoother and movements were a lot sharper. Back then you would only really find that level of animation from a western studio for a movie or a motion picture. Not for a cartoon. It kind of changed the game of how cartoons in the West would be done and look.

It will never happen again probably. Idk which interview it was, but apparently the animation director, Shingo Natsume, called in favors from the time he worked at other studios as a freelance (including JCStaff, season 2s animation studio) from talented people that allowed the already start studded MADHouse team, mixed in with Natsume knowing how much time to give his animators made season 1. The amount of money they would have had to spend if they wanted to keep all those people for the 2nd season would have been near a movie budget. I was sad with season 2, and even Natsume was kind of bashing them since he knows given enough time JC can make really good animation, but sadly their director and people with money wanted to rush them while hype was high instead of delay it (plus Natsume wanted to stay as director which he could have since he Is freelance, let's hope season 3 they put him back in since he's in love with the project)

Well, I think the problem comes from the connotation of what is meant when the term "anime" is used. Usually that's referring to Japanese animation, or I suppose any other Asian cartoon specifically, and I think that's where you'll see the problem. Avatar is technically "anime", especially when we consider it was animated in Korea, and if we want to refer to its short-hand of the word "animation" or otherwise a cartoon, but many people generally think of the Japanese variety when that term is used and simply use "cartoon" or "animation" to describe everything else.
