Yeah, I always says that most of ZAFT's action are kinda on boundary of self-defense or pre-emptive action against actual military threat. Great collection of the historical background / world-building. It might have to be an entire video on its own (if not already done), but lore of the Orb Union (from just the shows) is a bit lacking in some reasons for how Orb came to be. The Orb Union felt like it was "punching above its weight, and then also using a mobile suit" for just how "on steroids" it felt. Orb, as a small nation, had economic and scientific prowess that felt almost impossible. Was it the space port and Heliopolis for the economic strength? Their Coordinator-friendly status for having a very strong basis for making great scientific achievements?
@eight-cloudspurple58716 ай бұрын
It is canon that Orb's success was partly due to coordinators. Oceania is also more lenient on coordinators as a way to improve its economy and industry, according to lore books.
@draochvar96464 күн бұрын
Orb punching above it's weight is a twofold matter. For one, they heavily leaned on the abilities of Coordibators without the usual hiccups the sponsor nations had. For another, they were an early investor into all things space and held the exclusive rights to one of the earliest full-on colonies.

If anything, SEED showed the dangers of radicalism and extremism. The Zala led radical faction increasingly becoming identical to BC-led Earth Alliance as the series progress. To me, ZAFT won once the EA lunar base is destroyed. Patrick was too blind and can only see enemies and orders the GENESIS to set target on Earth. Even the soldiers in the control room doesn't seem okay with it. The colonies were thought to be the last bastion of safety for the Coordinators, so yeah, Junius 7 was the last straw. Earth's inability to curb Blue Cosmos' influence and radicalism is its biggest failure and thus paid the price.

I think knowing the lore is important in order to fully understand the motivations of the Earth Alliance. Too many people chalk them up to simple racism. Yes, racism and the fear of “other” plays a part, but economics are perhaps the largest factor at play. The PLANTs were expensive investments for the Alliance that return huge profits. By declaring independence, ZAFT is effectively attempting to assume ownership of these investments for free, basically stealing untold sums of invested money and potential profit from the Sponsor Nations. We understand why ZAFT is attempting to do this, but we should also understand and acknowledge the economic disaster granting their request would cause the Sponsor Nations which rely on them. It would be akin to a group of sovereign citizens demanding the USA cede control of California (the world’s fifth largest economy in some years) to them in exchange for effectively nothing. The USA already has California and benefits from its trade, so why would it give it up for free and agree to less favorable trade deals? The Sponsor Nations already have exclusive rights to the PLANTs they paid for, so why would they let the PLANTs declare independence and negotiate non-exclusive, less profitable trade deals with them? Why would they agree to compete for what is theirs? Anyway, sorry for the long rant. I just find the Cosmic Era history pre-SEED much more interesting than most will acknowledge. I think understanding it does a lot for people’s perception of the series.

good points, but that said the Earth Alliance was practically doing the same thing the Earth Federation did to their space colonies in UC: treating them and the people they basically forced to migrate there as labor workers to exploit for their privileges, all the while not doing anything for them in exchange of making all those products they depended on. One of the big reasons the PLANTs wanted to become independent was that the Earth Alliance did nothing at all to protect the people making all their stuff for trading and consumption from those anti-coordinator terrorist attacks, threatening their live hood. Can't really feel ok working on the manufacturing of goods when you are at a constant fear that some extreme groups would come in and kill you and the people you care brutally simply cuz your parents wanted you to have genetic advantages

Economics also play a part in anti-Coordinator resentment, in that when you have a small subset of humanity that is altered to be stronger/faster/smarter/etc. compared to everyone else, said individuals end up monopolizing well-paying jobs, both as employees and entrepreneurs--and because the alterations are based in GENETICS, this means that ONLY these individuals are capable of attaining the highest levels of wealth and success (at least if genetic enhancement is widespread enough). Given that genes are passed down biologically, the presence of genetic enhancement creates bloodlines that are effectively PREDESTINED for wealth and success, and this makes downward mobility (i.e. the 1st generation builds a fortune, the 2nd consolidates it, and the 3rd squanders it and winds up in poverty again) effectively impossible, and (because inequality is inevitable in ANY society regardless of wealth redistribution mechanisms---especially as only a limited percentage of the population can be rich) effectively causes social mobility to collapse. Given that genetic enhancement is likely ONLY available to wealthy families in that universe, this effectively walls off upward mobility to lower and middle-class individuals, and to a FAR worse extent than has occurred in even the most unequal societies in history (because even in say, feudal societies, certain exceptionally talented individuals from poor families have still achieved significant upward mobility on merit). Really what is striking to me about the concept of Coordinators is the extent to which the very idea seems like a way for wealthy families (who can afford the enhancements) to hold onto generational wealth forever, and never have to compete on a level playing field and risk losing their wealth. This is the epitome of Social Darwinism (with the intent to create a permanent ruling class that never has to compete on a level playing field), and as such it makes perfect sense why Blue Cosmos' position on Coordinators is so persuasive to so many in universe, even if the methods Blue Cosmos employs are often amoral and outright evil. I, for one, find Coordinators an inherently unsympathetic faction because of this (while I do not oppose the acquisition of wealth, I do oppose doing so with such dishonest means as purposely walling off upward mobility opportunities for others), and while I disagree with Blue Cosmos' worst actions, I do find that if the Earth Alliance merely shifted its goals to winning the war and putting a stop to ZAFT's Social Darwinist ideologies, I would see them as THE GOOD GUYS (also, this is part of my headcanon on what Fllay Allster ACTUALLY believes (as opposed to what she seemed to believe due to the stress of losing her home, not knowing if her friends Jessica and Misha were still alive, seeing her boyfriend Sai abandon her when she was scared, seeing Lacus act like an airhead who didn't even understand the concept of war, AND THEN seeing her father die)---really Fllay seems like a kind soul trapped in a broken and hostile world, and if Kira, Sai, and Mirialia had just tried to empathize with her all of their stories would have turned out much more positive).

I've been playing with a 'remake' of SEED where the timeline makes more sense... including a PLANTS War of Independence. ... though if my Traveller/Transhuman Space setting shows up, the Earth Alliance is going to have problems... as in 'ok, screw this, time for the Mandate to send the Imperial Army (aka 'people immune to War Crimes' by default, only sent out if the equivalent of the Godzilla Threshold is passed) down their throat and implement a 'denazification' program that makes what we did to Germany look like a picnic'. Oh, and they'll entirely rely on the Mandate to be clothed, fed, and medicated as the local industry and businesses will be dissolved.

I think the tragedy is that... People, or at least a selected few, know exactly what they are fighting for. In the end, the conflict is between the Old Establishment(sponsor Nations) and up-and-coming New Establishment(PLANT and Coordinators) fighting over the same piece of pie; the profit (be it monetary or industrial or strategic) of PLANTs work. Whoever gets hold of that is gonna be very powerful. Its a grim geopolitical game, and no one wants to be the loser. Even without the discrimination, without the kill-em-all extremism, the very fact remains that the 2 are in DIRECT conflict with each other's interest.
