On the topic of Polokus and Jano, I forget how much of this is explained in the yellow lum lore, but basically, all of Polokus' dreams become reality; that's part of how Rayman's world and people were created. And that's all of his dreams, including his nightmares. Jano was the first nightmare Polokus ever had and I think it is meant to be basically he dreamt of an evil version of himself, hence the same hat

Agreed. Very important to understand the lore of Polokus early on, given that the Bubble Dreamer from Origins and Legends is actually meant to be Polokus!

​@@PetroniousIt depends on which version your playing. The PS1/PS2 versions are missing the information. The game has a sort of "lore" that you can access by collecting the yellow lums. It is just a small bit of text unlocked every small milestone that tells you details about the land of dreams and it's inhabitants. It's really inconsequential, but it was cool to me when I was a kid. Hadn't played a game with lore before.

The PS1 version is so different because it's based on earlier builds of the game rather than the final version of the game. It was most likely due to poor communication between the studios during the development as the PS1 version was handled by a different studio.

You know whats bizzare? For all the versions of Rayman 2 released, Ubisoft have not made an HD version for it, but INSTEAD made one for Rayman 3 on PS3 & X360. Crazy, I know.

Yes, except the PlayStation 1 version of Rayman 2 is missing half of the game Because of the voice acting. some levels like the Top of the World and The Sanctuary of Water and Ice were completely cut out as well.

The Rayman trilogy was a big part of my childhood. I played Rayman 1 on my ps1, Rayman 2 on my pc, and Rayman 3 on my ps2. I have come around to playing Rayman 2: Revolution too as a kid at my friend's house, and I even own a copy of it rn that I have finished years ago. I've seen my friend play the 3ds port which has the Dreamcast level menu but personally I like the n64 and pc level menus' mystical atmosphere the most.

Brilliant video, Rayman 2 is one of my all time favourite games and whilst I'd looked up the port differences in the past it was much more enjoyable seeing that in more depth. Solid cameo from Nitro Rad too. Looking forward to the Rayman 3 video though, I absolutely loved that game but it seems to get mixed reviews

Oh boy...I could spend hours talking about Rayman 2/Revolution: long story short, it's my favourite game ever and the one I played the most on the PS2, without a doubt. I also got a copy of the Dreamcast version for collecting purposes. Great review, Pete! Just a question: where did you get that awesome Rayman t-shirt ?!

Great work on this whole video, Pete! And man, didn't know the PS2 was radically different than the PS1, let alone the Dreamcast version. And nice to get Nitro Rad as a cameo! I remember playing the DC version all those years ago, but didn't comprehend the concept of a memory bank, so I ended up playing the first few hours of the game repeatedly til' I returned it from my rental.

Fuckin' love watching videos on Rayman 2, especially when it comes to the mass amounts of ports. I never knew the game was on anything other than the PS1 as a kid so when I saw the thing on DS at a friend's house I was blown away. :P

Funnily enough, the PS2 version was actually my first version of Rayman 2 (aside from a demo level I had on PC and also a few bits of the N64 version I've played at my cousin's house) and at the time I thought it was just a new game since I bought it after Rayman 3. When I started playing it, I was like : "I'm liking this but why does it have worse graphics than Rayman 3?" Then after coming across the few levels I was familiar with, I realized I was actually playing Rayman 2 lol. Later down the line, I got to play a few other versions (N64, PC and 3ds) and realized how much extra stuff was crammed on the PS2 version, obviously it didn't feel bloated to me since it was my first exposure anyways but I definitely see where you're coming from, the hubs themselves aren't exactly easy to navigate and there's a lot more loading times to deal with as well. (Special mention to the abomination that is the 3ds version for having several bugs in the hidden "1000th" lum room including a guaranteed crash when you leave the area through that exit. Also, the flying missile likes to move on its own in that version, making that final level way harder that it needed to be.)

Strangely enough I never played Rayman 2 or any of its sequels for the same reason I never played any of Gex's sequels. My brain just could not fathom them making the jump to 3D. Like my brain associated them so much with 2D platforming that the very notion of them in 3D made no sense to me at all, even though in both Rayman and Gex's case their 3D outings are considered the far superior titles. I guess what I'm saying is your video made me realize I really should get around to playing Rayman 2 at some point XD

Dreamcast version will forever be the best version. It's the sweet spot in terms of content, great controls and overall easily looks the best with 480P @60fps and can even be played in native widescreen 16:9 (one of the few Dreamcast games that has this feature). It should also be noted that the main designer of Rayman 2 has stated that the Dreamcast version should be seen as the definitive version.

Man, the Nitro Rad cameo appearances left me gleaming. :) Honestly makes me glad I didn't own the PS1 version growing up. It baffles me how Caddicarus only looked at the aforementioned inferior port a few years back and actually enjoyed it. I know it comes down to personal preference but still, coming from him, it's inexcusable in my books. Yours and Nitro Rad's reviews will always be superior in my eyes.

The Dreamcast version is a must play for any fan of Rayman 2! I got it for the first time this summer and played through the game for the very first time (only reason I got a Dreamcast system believe it or not), and there's a lot of differences and tidbits that I feel the DC version is better to play through. There's even Globox Village in the DC version which isn't in any other version of the game (there is Globox's house in Revolution but it isnt the same). The N64 version is what I grew up with back in the day and yes, I didnt have a memory card on my first and probably 2nd, 3rd playthrough so I had the leave the console on to get through to the end at least once. 😆

The PC port of Rayman 2 had one problem, you couldn't customize your controls without modding. Ironically, you could rebind your controls in the pc port of Tonic Trouble.

Well, Petronious. I know that the PlayStation 1 version Of Rayman 2 The Great Escape does have cut content and a good chunk of levels were trimmed down or completely removed and reducing the levels' sizes in that version, but it's still enjoyable to get through. And the Dreamcast version does look exquisite. I like the Dreamcast, PS1, Nintendo 3DS, and the PS2 versions the most as the best versions of Rayman 2 for me. The worst version is Rayman DS, due to the lack of the analog stick. and yes, the PS1 version is missing a lot of stuff because of sound files bloating up space on the disk

the reason polokus and jeno have the same hat is actually explained in the manual of rayman origins I believe : so basically, while polokus was doing his God's shenanigans, he had his very first nightmare who was actually geno. I know it doesn't specifically states why they have the same hat, and god knows how much this series contradicts it's own lore but I just thought it was interesting to point out.

How in the heck is it that so many Rayman 2 videos exist out there and yet this one didn't feel like the same old story with a differemt voice? The time put in here to cover the game in such detail is clear as day, loved this. 25 minutes to get to the combat? The build up was satisfying. And as for what those "electric ping pong balls" are: did you know that the DS port of Rabbids confirmed that Rayman's energy shots are actually lum energy? Yeah, he punches in some games and shoots in others, but does BOTH in that game with the power tied to collecting yellow lums. Man, it's gonna be so weird seeing what few characters are here return for R3 and Origins and hear your thoughts on them in those... ESPECIALLY Polokus in the latter.

Ive been a PS1 player of Rayman 2 since I was a kid and speedrunner for a while and I love that version of the game so, so much. It might be missing content, sure, but I had no context of that back in 2004 and when I play it next to the other versions I still prefer it, I think it controls better despite the framerate, especially if you play NTSC copies. I'm so happy it's still getting screentime on KZbin!

I always liked the ps1 game more, the voice acting felt more fitting, i find the levels better paced and it has the better final boss. Sure as hell lobe the pc version as well. (On the voice acting, the fact bosses talk helped me love the game even more. It gives bosses actual reason to fight or help rayman)

I also grew up with the PS1 version. After being berated & having rotten fruit thrown at me in the street (although that might not be to do with Rayman 2), I felt like playing the PC version of Rayman 2 this year... and I had to use a terrible joy2key program because the UPlay version doesn't have a modern fan patch like the GOG version. I got through the game just fine for the most part, then the ending section just destroyed me to the point that I gave up. May purchase the GOG version just for that patch or try to get the Dreamcast version up and running. Some jank aside, I did enjoy my time though. It's a very cosy game with such a great atmosphere. I appreciate what 3 tried to do but I feel like I vibe with 2 a lot more. It deserves to be ported this much because it's a lovely game everyone deserves to experience in some way. Yeah, I didn't stick with Revolution. I'm just not a fan of the hubworld either. Maybe next playthrough, I'll try again but not any time soon.

I enjoy your videos a lot and as an old fan I'm super excited when Rayman videos came out only recently, but you made me chuckle so hard at the ds part. Itt brought back so much memories! My parents got me Rayman 2 when I was little and due to its dark tone and my siblings being even younger they never let me play the game. Fast forward to christmas years later where each of us got a DS and a game. Due to the model of Rayman 3 being on the cover, my parents also thought it was a new Rayman that just used the 2 engine due to it being a DS game. Pretty quickly realized it was just two but in a bugged version - which is even bugged to this day. My brother and I recently tried to emulate it and there's a part with a net where the game is unplayable. Nevertheless, I feel like this was the first real life clickbait I had ever experienced and I was only 7 years old

Great video, man. It’s weird, never been a fan of the original Rayman but I’ve always loved all the versions of Rayman 2, especially the PS1 and Dreamcast versions. Yep, for some reason, I love the PS1 version as I think it keeps the atmosphere while being more compact and to the point so to speak. I love playing it on the Duckstation emulator as it sharpens the image to HD and it looks hundreds of times better. Also, the save state / load state feature really helps the enjoyment of the game…😅 I’ve been looking for a good video comparing the PS1 version with the other ones for a long time, so thanks for this. Hey, if you allow me to give you an advice, try to play the PS1 version of Rayman 2 on Duckstation either on PC or maybe on Nvidia Shield TV like I do. It’s absolutely great to set the game up on HD with a higher frame rate. I love playing it like that, it is really a new experience in terms of visuals.👍

You bring up a great point, I genuinely think a platformer like Croc would've been more fondly remembered if it didn't have tank controls. Like why was that even a thing? The Dreamcast version looks so good and smooth in comparison to everything else. I also remember getting this game on many occasions for the DS and 3DS but never pulling the trigger. Played the PC version first, it was like my fav game ever for a long time (ever since i was 5). I'd say Dreamcast is equal, all others are downgrades and Revolution on the PS2 is the definitive one for me. But I agree they stuffed too much in it, and it's really more fun for someone that has seen the regular one and wants 'something more', like an expansion pack to it. Wouldn't recommend anyone playing to start with that one ;)

Twas an entertaining video! Bit of advice for rayman 3. If you plan on playing the pc version, you’re going to want to limit your framerate (I forgot exactly to what). I say this because some of the falling platforms on the hoverboarding sections fall with a speed dependant on the framerate, and it made me fail a specific set of jumps quite a lot. Cheers

One smaller thing that's interesting to me about this game is the character animation. You'll notice the characters are a tiny bit jittery with their movements in the DC and PC version, not as smooth as the rest of the game, but this isn't an issue on PS1. So it seems like the animators animated everything at the lower framerate of the PS1, while the rest of the game was tailored specifically for the Dreamcast, which seems to be the target platform for the most complete version of the game. Very strange...

I'm playing the PSOne version right now, despite playing it on PC when I was young and finally completing the Dreamcast version last year. I'm playing this version for two reasons: I was getting curious about all the differences and most importantly, it's the easiest version to emulate. PSOne emulation really doesn't need a lot of power or even joysticks, making it a great game to play on my Anbernic RG35xx. Great video BTW! Rayman 2 has a special place in my heart (as do Rayman 1/Advance and Rayman 3), so this was very enjoyable!

Yeah that's the thing I stand by too. While not the best version by a long shot, I think the PS1 port is a nice curiosity to play thanks to the prototype at the end, if you're a big enough Rayman fan. Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment too! 👍

I remember being super disappointed the absence of a fourth Polokus temple. Already the 2nd and 3rd temples were a bit same-y (lava, lava, lava...), even though the 2nd one was supposed to be fire themed and the 3rd one was supposed to be earth themed. So I was looking forward to the "air temple." But nope, not in the game. I mean, yeah, okay - Revolution on PS2 added an air-themed mask guardian. But still no air temple! An air temple MUST'VE been planned at SOME point during development! But there's absolutely no info on it. Which I find weird. Really, nothing? Nada? Not a single mention anywhere? How curious. First the SwordQuest series on Atari 2600 got canned before AirWorld came out and then Rayman 2 had water, fire & earth temples but no air temple. Coincidence? :P

While I've never played Rayman 2 for myself, I recall it was one of the first games I saw in action on a friends Nintendo 64. I'd love to give this game a shot someday, but the Dreamcast port seems the most enticing. I actually bought the PS1 version a long time ago, but I recall somebody saying it wasn't the best way to play it, so I'll just either have to wait until a DC port comes out, or maybe buckle down and get the PS2 version. If you own a softmodded New 3DS, you can get Rayman 3D to work in 60fps. It's pretty neat.

Personally I liked the additions of Rayman Revolution. Yeah they might have somewhat impeded the flow of the game at times, but the atmosphere of the game is what I'm playing it for and having more of the area and having it be more physically connected added to the journey.

I noticed you have the 10th Anniversary but on the PS2. I didnt know there was a 10th Anniversary version on the PS2. I have the GBA 10th Anniversary which is just Rayman Advance and Rayman 3 on one cartridge and I did a longplay of Advance on my channel but havent checked out Rayman 3 on GBA yet. I also got the 10th Anniversary on PC but...... not the North American release. I ordered the game on Amazon and because the particular order was "import", it was the EU release. lol. The 10th Anniversary on PC has Rayman M and Rayman 3 so they're the same as the PS2 10th Anniversary version but Rayman 2 is The Great Escape and the PC 10th Anniversary version has an extra title "Print Studio" which we can print Rayman things. As for Revolution which is one of my favorite ports, it's better to play it on the PS3 from the PS2 Classic section in the PS Store. Sadly though, it only had an NA release as EU and JPN was not released unfortunately.

The PS1 version was my first exposure to R2 as well (aside from the GBC version but that's practically a different game with the same story) and to be honest, whilst I do accept that nostalgia probably plays a part in this, I can't bring myself to hate it as much as everyone else seems to do. Yes it sucks that a lot of the game has been cut, but I actually think the voice acting is pretty good all things considered (better than Revolution anyway!) and I loved the additional dialogue they added with the mask guardians. I also prefer the Sanctuary of Stone and Fire in this version - it seems that the optional segment was essentially merged with the compulsory bit, and it makes the dungeon feel larger and more eery. Heck, I think there's even a new segment in the middle that doesn't correspond with anything from the original. So yes, I really think the PS1 port deserves more love, even though you are right that the high amount of cut content probably wasn't necessary.

I really loved this video, and Rayman 2: The Great Escape is Still my #1 Favourite Rayman Game of All Time, and this was interesting watching this awesome video. Also, I grew up with the PlayStation version of Rayman 2: the Great Escape, but 7 months ago I tried out the Dreamcast version of Rayman 2: The Great Escape game on the Dreamcast Emulator, and I like it better than the PlayStation version.

The reason Rayman 2's PS1 port was so scaled back was because Ubisoft outsourced it to their inexperienced Chinese division to port it by any means necessary.

I actually really enjoy the PS1 version of Rayman 2, i just don't consider it the "canon" events of what happened. I just like to enjoy it for what it is. My first version of Rayman 2 was the PC version, and that's my personal favourite version.
