My Head Canons: About Rayman throwing energy balls instead of his fists: Rayman lost his fighting abilities before the events of the game, and Ly had no idea how to recreate Betildia's Fist Spell (I assume she was captured as well, but taken FAAAAAAAAAR away from Rayman to prevent her from helping him), So Ly used one of her own spell involving energy (since she can create them at will), sent it to Globox, cue intro of game. About the "Death Water" The Water was either Polluted (Like the first stage with Oil, and Nightmare Cave with.... Nightmares (Which I guess is Raymanian for "Anti-Matter")), full of dangerous piranhas (Marsh), it's moving to quickly (Chase Level), or would tire out and drown (Any area with ocean). Makes a lot more sense than "DUR EVERYTHING IS PIRANHAS". AND NOW... Truth about Umber: Ly told him you were coming, and in most versions he just walks back. ... No seriously, the PS and PS2 versions of all things elaborates on this.
@robonaught5 жыл бұрын
Doesn't explain why there are piranhas in the ocean(sharks would have made more sense) since piranhas are not salt water fish. Nor does it make any sense to how in areas like in the Fairy Glade with the big giant oil pump polluting the water or the bright green toxic liquid in the start of Tomb Of The Ancients have piranhas swimming in them. Seriously how are the piranhas able to swim and live in the dangerous water but not Rayman?!
@HardCorePoration5 жыл бұрын
@@robonaught I imagine it had something to do with the Heart of the World shattering, which created abominations like the Zombie Chickens. The Piranhas could also be a result of that cataclysm, and adapted themselves to survive in these harsh conditions as a result of their evil and chaotic genesis.
@squallthegriever3 жыл бұрын
Rayman shooting energy shots just looks and is a much better power for a 3d world. Also I do believe that Ly did just grant him her power and technically nothing says he should have or did lose it. His fist work well but it would be cool to see him obtain the ability to switch in a future game the powers. Rayman wasnt weak to water he was weak to the oil pollution and piranhas in every bit of water that damages you was easier than just sharks. He should have a mana bar.

I grew up with the PC version, which was pretty close to the Dreamcast quality. It was the first game I ever played, and I was only five at the time ! It took me six years, coming back and forth to it, before I finally had my final battle with Razorbeard. I swear, that Stone and Fire Sanctuary was a nightmare to play back then ! I still consider that game, even today, to be the best game I've ever played. The soundtrack is awesome, the graphics are beautiful, the characters are enjoyable, the controls are fluid, the gameplay is always interesting, and I still enjoy to play it 15 years later. This is the game that not only taught me video games, but also made me feel for the first time that determination to explore a game to find all its secrets, and get to the mighty 100% Completed.

They're all very no-bullshit and to the point; while other reviewers would spend time making useless generalizations like "the level design is really creative," you single out what REALLY makes these games good or bad (like the segment in this video where you praise the ledge grabbing) and I really respect that. Looking forward to more!

There is even a bit of mythology to the game, like with the guardian Jano. This guy was actually the first nightmare of Polokus, thus the first villain of the Glade, and the very reason Rayman was created in the first place. Why does he help Rayman though, we may never know.
@taste57288 жыл бұрын
Jano doesn't help rayman he make a deal -if you can find my treasure, you get the elixir if i found you before, you die this is why you run/slide to him to the green cristal slime and the camera is stuck in his mouth (he try to eat you) Jano wasn't a stupid nightmares like the others, he very smart! He make deals, is like he works. Before Rayman 1, he is the guy who have created anti-toons nobody can stop them because they are too many And you know what he have do? He makes a deal to polokus, litteraly god!!! XD he promise if nobody want to stop him in his life, he gonna make a jail for nightmares. so he created the cave Of the bad dreams (also 1 of my best Rayman 2 soundtrack) And now you have 2 nightmares jails, the land of living deads and the cave! One thing I love about the PS1 version is it feels better "edited". There are levels like that tropical island which are completely bland and don't add much, which was removed from the PS1 version and was replaced with a much longer swimming sequence with the purple whale. This also made it much more tense, as it felt like you were trying to survive for much longer. In the other versions, it felt like only a short swim in the tunnel. I also felt like due to the poor lighting capabilities, the game was much darker, mixed in with the tenser swimming section and it felt awesome to me as a kid.

What an amazing new video NitroRad! I've officially subscribed! Your content it's very entertaining and not only it's a review,but also differents point of view when it comes to a platformer! You're clearly doing ''Rayman 3'' next time,but I'm gonna tell you something that not most of the fans have noticed,just use this in case you talk about some voice acting and some different versions of the game. ''On the level ''The Tower of Leptys'',there's a part in wich Rayman and Globox are in a kind of like ''space controlled shooter'',after the cutscene with the first enemies appearing,Rayman says the line ''All right ladies and gent',let's ROLL!'' but curiously,this line is only said and heard on the Gamecube and HD ports of the game,in the rest PS2,Xbox and PC versions of the game,the line is not heard,and substituted by some jump sound effects.The reason is unknown,with the fact of Rayman (the protagonist),being one of the characters in the entire game with the least amount of lines'' Keep the good work!!!

I have the PS2 version and I fell in love with this game. It felt radically different in some ways than Rayman 3 (which is the first one I came in contact with), and it gave Rayman a little more heart to his personality, which I appreciated. I also found the encounter with Jano VERY unsettling!
@angelarturokooistra76718 жыл бұрын
Dude, the reason why the PSone was so different, is because of hardware limitations. The ps1 wasn't made for huge open worlds/leves like Rayman 2's. That's why the final boss is so different. In Crash bandicoot, anything was quite cramped and small but still detailed while Spiro's world, is more open but it is made more simplistic. But that fits with well with the cartoony artstyle. Rayman 2 had huge world "surface" and a lots of details of its time. Also the ps1 had just 2 mb of ram, while other consoles had 4mb or even more. The PSone was great at high poly counts as long if they were small. Even better then the N64 (in terms of polycount ONLY)
@shotgunmasterQL7 жыл бұрын
Angel Aguanaris You are probably the first person I have seen saying this, and I do think its true. One way of "confirming" this, is to compare it to other games released around same time, and to the original releases. Its been a long time since I ripped my PS1 games, but Rayman 2 was released around 2000-2001, which falls in line with Spyro 2 and 3's release dates. Those Spyro games were about 770-900 mb's in size, so this means the CDs of that time were almost capable of holding 1gb's of data. Rayman 2 was around 400-500 mb's IIRC... Could have even been 600. Now, sound files obviously take quite a lot of space, but the original uncut game on the N64 must have only been 60-80 mb's, or I guess some cartridges could go above 100 mb's? removing parts of a level or some levels as a whole would save you a nearly insignificant amount of space on a PS1 disc. If they were worried about disc space, they would have not included the Rayman 2 prototype demo on the same disc. I havent played the original releases (only Revolution on PS2 later), and if Revolution is closer to the originals in terms of the presentation, then I think they must have added some extra polish to the PS1 release, with more finetuned cutscenes. Few of the areas in Revolution seemed unnecessary either way, which is why they were probably cut for the optimization (the one area where I distinctly remember thinking about this, was in one of the later levels... where you had to flip 4 switches IIRC... where you got this semi big open area on the side, with a small shallow river stream going through, and 20-40 lums were just sitting around the grass. A completely pointless area) Another big hint telling you that all the cuts were hardware related, is that the pirate robots are a whole lot more simpler. Revolution had some rooms filled with +4 easiest pirate robots that have their healthbar, but can only take 1 hit, and they move erratically. In the PS1 version, you will ever fight one pirate robot at once, and their movement is much more predictable. At most, you fight many robots in a row, or fight other more standard enemies in a bunch. TL;DR Definitely hardware limitations.
@shotgunmasterQL7 жыл бұрын
TheRealArcademon No. PS1 hardware was just not strong enough. You can fit an open world to a N64 cartridge, but you just wont be able to make it very expansive.
@shotgunmasterQL7 жыл бұрын
TheRealArcademon Because it had the capacity for it? Handling FMVs isnt exactly a massive showcase of power considering how even older consoles were capable of that, and if there was some sort of worse sound chip inside N64 (like there possibly was, because IIRC Sony was very experienced in that field back then), its not up to the hardware power, but the hardware itself. FMVs and good quality sound effects/music take a lot of space. PS1 was considerably weaker (I heard N64 was about twice as strong, and could push over twice the polygons) hardware power wise, but it had the capacity for open world stuff in its CD's. N64 HW power could have managed it better, but didnt have the capacity in its cartridges.
@BryanX647 жыл бұрын
Rayman 2 isn't open world though lol
@shotgunmasterQL7 жыл бұрын
BryanX 64 Original context: "You can fit an open world to a N64 cartridge, but you just wont be able to make it very expansive." Used as a comparison point for memory capacity, as that was one of the topics earlier. PS1 CD's could house open world games, but often PS1 was not strong enough for games like that. Rayman 2 isnt open world, but it has very large levels with few branching paths. PS1 CDs should be able to house all the levels no problem, but the hardware simply wouldnt be enough for them. Even the cut down PS1 levels are still pretty damn long and large, so I doubt the PS1 hardware could do much more than that.

As a Rayman fan, I actually wouldn't recommend the N64 version as it is a real downgrade from the PC version which has virtually the same content. While the PS1 is quite cut in content and has a voice acting inferior to the PS2 version I still think it is worth a try for some exclusive elements like the hidden 2D Prototype, an exclusive level phase in the Sanctuary of Stone and Fire that does not appear in any other version, extra character dialogues/interactions/Razorbeard cutscene, Ninjaws' battle and other alterations in some levels to make up for the cuts that were done. As for the "water kills Rayman everywhere", in that Precipice phase I actually think it is more the big water current that immediately kills Rayman. With all that wind going on makes me believe there is a storm around so it wouldn't surprise me. But for most places it is indeed the piranhas' presence. Excellent review!

I just subscribed to your channel last night after watching your Vexx review. Specifically, when I heard you say that you don't like to review games until you beat them, I figuratively pumped my fists, and that's what made me subscribe. I kind of like your style of reviewing too, as it seems to let the game take more center stage than in the more comical style that's looking to entertain the viewer more than actually review the game. Though I am a fan of that style when it's done in a respectful and intelligent manner--like with Blondeguygamer and SCXCR--there are too many times where it becomes obvious these people aren't even serious about getting the review right--such as the original AVGN and Zero Punctuation. It's nice to see someone reviewing a game in a simple, straightforward manner. Having said all of that, I'm commenting because I felt the need to address your arguments against variety in platformers that changes the genre to something different. To an extent, you have a point, and those developers who are not at the top of their game would do best to avoid straying into territory outside of the bread and butter of jumping between platforms, avoiding obstacles, and collecting things. However, there are actually, in my opinion, numerous examples of highly regarded games doing the same thing and getting little to no flack for it, and ironically, one of them is mentioned in your video: Crash Bandicoot. The first two games didn't really defy that expectation, but Warped--regarded by many as the best in the series--has entire stages that are nothing but airplane dogfights, and it also features a boss fight that is basically a space shooter segment. The Spyro games--especially Spyro 3--contain a lot of tasks that have little or nothing to do with platforming, including hockey games, Sparx segments that are more like top-down shooters, and even some boxing matches. Sly Cooper has racing stages, twin shooter stages, and even some pseudo-shooter segments. Heck, one of the only remaining juggernauts in the genre--Ratchet and Clank--is only just barely classifiable as a platformer because of its huge emphasis on weapons. Again, I don't think your general principle is wrong because most of the time platformers that incorporate these segments are not able to do them in a polished manner; I only mean that the real issue isn't whether those segments belong in the games, but rather whether they're done well enough for players to enjoy them. The Ty games are probably good examples of how to do those segments poorly, though I think I enjoyed them just the same. The point, though, is that I think there are several exceptions to your general rule. In any event, keep up the good work. :)

You made me love my favorite game even more then before now. I have´t been able to play it for years so I had only my memories to go by but you reminded me why I loved it so much. The smooth gameplay, the mechanics, level designs, the use of enemies and bosses. Normally I tend to dislike games for lack of bosses but Rayman 2 somehow did´t bother me there thanks to it´s greats scenarios like fleeing that Pirateship, all those slides and just so much more. No stage felt like the other and even if some levels were hard I just enjoyed the challenge. Even those Pirate soldiers you do fight do feel like mini bosses. Sure it got a dark setting but it has so much love and charm. I love the humor in it. I played the PC version but I remember playing N64 too and what I know there is barely any difference. And that swing mechanic. Before playing a Spiderman game, that made me feel like Spiderman in a game. Good review, honest and on point.

I think the definitive version of Rayman 2 would be Rayman Revolution for the PS2. It had an open-world and better graphics than the PS1 and N64 versions. The Dreamcast version is the second best. Mainly because the Dreamcast was an actual dream to behold.

this is one of the best platformers ever and it's a shame there isn't a proper rayman sequel to it. after this it's just rabbids shit and more 2d. i always thought the art style was always rly unique and alluring in presenting a mystic forest setting combatting evil technology and rayman2 got rid of the nonsensical candy and music worlds. when i first played it at age 10 i also thought the undead worlds and those "zombie chickens" to be really unsettling and creepy for some reason, i would always have a hard time forcing myself through those sections of the game. it's just a really unique world with a bunch of strange stuff that somehow remains aesthetically and mechanically cohesive. bring it back!

For me, Rayman 2/Revolution was, and will always be, not just a game, but THE game. I lost count of many hours I spent on it over the years. Fun fact, for a LONG time, I thought Revolution and 2 were two separate games, and anytime Rayman 3 characters mentioned it, I was like "Wow, I gotta try out this Rayman 2!" Imagine my reaction when I found out I had it all the time...XD

I used to think that Rayman died when touching certain waters because that water was polluted and it harmed him. Back then I even made that connection because it's usually levels that are taken by pirates where the water is dirty and you can't see the bottom. Just a thought from back when I was a kid! I forgot but your video reminded me of it, can't wait to play the Dreamcast or N64 version!!

I have the 3DS version, and I’m sad to hear I can’t get that last yellow lum! My favorite part of the game is how sweet Rayman is to the other characters in the Cutscenes, that cut scene where he comforts Globox was especially heartwarming, you don’t get a lot of moments like that in games *cough, Banjo-Kazooie, cough, Kid Icarus Uprising* (I’m not saying those games are bad, they’re some of my favorite games actually)

Oh man, I can't believe you didn't mention how they absolutely NAILED underwater controls. I don't think there's been a game since that did underwater as well as Rayman 2 did. For those not in the know, when you're in one of the rare swimmable areas (or one of the two (?) underwater levels), pushing the control stick moves you around in the plane you're currently on, and you press one button to rise and another to sink (A and Z on the N64) much like a submarine. As I said, this mechanic plays amazingly well, and only accentuates the awesomeness of the game even further. Edit: Oh yeah, and how could I forget the sound? It's been years since I played this game, and I can STILL hear Rayman's climbing, running, and ledge-grabbing sounds in my head, not to mention most of the level themes.

I know you’re the B-grade Platformer Guy. That’s your niche and you do a great job... but, since you did review the 3D Mario games, maybe you could review a Yoshi game or two? In particular, obviously, Yoshi’s Story. I love that little game, it was my first exposure to Yoshi, and I really appreciate the arcady structure: picking whatever six levels you want, trying to get a high score by exploring really open 2D environments to find secret Melons and Hearts. The crafty backgrounds, the remixes of the main theme for stage music, the Nutcracker sounding castle theme and that credits music! And the secrets, like the really well hidden White Shyguys and the hidden super powerful White and Black Yoshi. I’m pretty sure this was the first Yoshi spin off game that didn’t have anything to do with Mario (maybe Tetris Attack or Yoshi’s Safari did that first?), and I still pick it up every couple months and clear it at least a few times.

I loved Rayman 2. Specifically the level "The Sanctuary of Water and Ice". I would listen to the song "L'Histoire D'une Fee, C'est" and beat that level in exactly the length of the song. (I'm not fancy btw. That song is from the Rugrats in Paris soundtrack...) It was a short but visually exciting level that matched well with the song.

Have you watched the developer Let's Play of Rayman 2? Michel Ancel has a lot to say. Also, knowing how much can a PS1 disk store, I will propose that Rayman 2 was cut short for time reasons. ALSO, GameCube and PS2 ports are the actual definitive versions.

The one with Tim Schafer right? What he said about the transitioning hallways being shaped like intestines was really cool.
@POLE76457 жыл бұрын
NotOrdinaryInGames I suspect that the levels were cut on the Playstation because of RAM limitations. The Playstation had less RAM and video memory than the N64, but had greater capacity with CDs. My guess is that the original levels couldn't fit in the memory and cuts had to be made.
@NotOrdinaryInGames6 жыл бұрын
Not true. You can cut levels into pieces, and have loading screens in-between. You can ALSO have loading inside the levels, like in the PSP Prince of Persia titles.

I really wanted to comment this same exact thing on his Rayman 3 video. But yeah, they fucked it up in the US version of the game so it's understandable he'd pronounce it that way. It's supposed to be "loom", not "lum".

When you mentioned the whole piranha part as to why Rayman barely swims in any levels, I thought you also knew from some certain parts in the fairy glade, there's these large pipes pouring out gunk. My sister and my nephew often thought that it's not just the water being infested with piranhas, but also because the water is contaminated with poisonous gunk.
