This was to me the big cop-out for the representation of the New Atheism movement. I grew up as a teenager in the 2000's and I was addicted to watching videos of Dawkins and Hitchens, while never letting go of my Christian background. The great virtue of the Four Horsemen and New Atheism movement in general, I thought, was the desire to question everything and willingness to put their ideas to the test in debate. I admired these people for their courage to ask the questions most Christians I felt were cowardly to ask. However, when William Lane Craig appeared on the stage all manner of excuses suddenly appeared. Polly Toynbee pulled out of the debate, Andrew Copson the head of the Humanist Association made the bizarre statement on radio that he felt it was a waste of time to debate William Lane Craig yet encouraged atheists in the audience-to-be to challenge and put to task Craig's views. Dawkins himself was happy to meet with Young Earth Creationists and random American preachers for his documentaries, yet when a philosopher of religion came to his own home turf he backed out by saying Craig was too horrible a person to share the stage with. This in spite the fact that he very regularly spoke with people he disagreed with and people who shared morals he would call evil. In short, it was an excuse to avoid his objections to God being put to the test by someone he feared was potentially able to grill him.

Well Richard is eight years older than Craig and he's getting weaker with age as everyone else. Second I think that arguing for deism (That there is an impersonal, meaningless intelligence holding the world together) and Christianity are two different things but they are often conflated and even if Dawkins has a hard time with some argument for deism it does not justify the teachings of Christianity but the audience would not necessarily see it that way. It is completely meaningless to me if I learn that there is a slothful intelligence behind the world's creation just like it was meaningless for ancient people not to know how the physics of gravity work. You cannot have a meaningful personal relationship with gravity or the law of thermodynamics or the way snowflakes are formed; those are simply explanations for banal things we see every day. Saying that there must be a God and even proving it is no different to me than proving that there must be some force keeping the blood pumping in my veins; it's nice to know but it ultimately won't change my philosophical outlook on life. The theory of blood circulation did not lead to new religions. As for the Christianity thing more specifically from an atheist perspective it's no different than arguing for the virtuousness of a guy called Bob who lives in his mother's basement and allegedly has a rich criminal history. Bob never shows up when questioned and it's always his mother at the door answering questions for him. If Bob is so powerful why does not he get off his butt and at least prove that he's not skeletonized or mummified in the basement? It's intellectual masturbation where one guy is arguing for the Occam's razor type of explanation and one is wasting his intelligence on endless excuses for Bob; in the end nothing is changed; some people will keep joining Christianity for social reasons and those who don't live out those emotional moments never will because normally nobody is intellectually convinced by Christianity but many are intellectually deconverted. Some of these theology people are very bright and it's such a waste to see their intelligence being used to defend Bob instead of contribute to humanity and unlike atheism Christianity in the west has a very long institutional tradition of coming up with clever defenses of Bob whereas in my country we only had freedom of religion in the 20th century and the protestant church still enjoys massive privileges where theology programs are basically clandestine apologetics to benefit the clergy. Imagine if atheism or maybe more specifically anti-Christianity had such a long and forceful as well as forced tradition. I would not be surprised if there are people who can argue Dawkins to bits. It still does not make Bob get off the couch and prove that he's alive much less justify his indolence. A superhuman alien species could land on earth right now and make an incredible argument for some complete nonsense that even our brightest philosophers could not refute because of their superhuman intelligence but that would not make the rubbish real.

Afraid is probably not the right word, but I certainly think he should be wary of it. WLC is quite skilled in the art of debate by simply using a reassuring voice and a lot of repetition and apparent certainty. I've heard many people pick apart his arguments, but that doesn't bother him a bit when on a debate stage, he keeps to his script, and for easily convinced people, that can certainly sound convincing. It's quite easy to pick apart the Kalam Cosmical Argument, for example, but it is a bit technical - and if WLC takes the stage after you and just claims that you in fact DID NOT pick it apart, but rather it stands, "as you all can agree", well then it might just sound like he won the debate.

@user-kc7xk6wy2z when a scientist has a hypothesis, they don’t go find reasons that it works and call it good. The only way to gain confidence and be academically taken seriously is by attacking your own beliefs and trying honestly to disprove your own ideas. You do this by partly by honestly and rigorously studying counter arguments and alternative explanations. If he didn’t take the time to learn about opposing views so deeply, he wouldn’t be anywhere near as convincing and his arguments would be much weaker. I’d encourage you to try challenging some of your own deeply held beliefs as well, it’s very rewarding.

It nearly always seems to mean that they have had to work at convincing themselves they're on the right track. With good science, having your views challenged by evidence or reason is exactly what you're seeking. The first approach will always be far inferior to the second.

I can´t speak for Alex, but the question (even if you don´t believe in God) are around why we are here, who am I, is there a purpose, what is right and wrong... and I think Alex is interested of those questions. Sure Alex does a little bit of money, but I think he is less out there for money than what for example Dawkins is. What I like about Alex is that he, in CONTRAST to many other atheists, reflects on things, and try to check the views from OTHER perspectives. He also LISTENS and in my view TRIES to understand, even if he might have the opposite idea. When it comes to Dawkins, I feel he is ignorant, and out to bash everything Christian... and become a "hero" among atheists, instead of discussing real questions. Who knows, maybe Alex is further in the journey than I and you are?

God is a preexisting entity unbound by our observations of the constraints of space and time, as, of course, a creator of said concepts. God always has, and always will exist, the beginning and the end. As for why I believe, it’s ultimately personal. I did grow up in a Christian home, so you might discount my beliefs entirely, but over time, I did my own study into the subject. I found that, in reading the Bible and in meditative prayer, I would feel a divine peace come over me. There were times additionally where I felt a stirring in my heart for something greater, and God was there. Whether you believe or not is your own choice, ultimately. However, I would encourage you to explore the religion for what it truly is, asking theologians and priest questions to obtain a fuller understanding of the belief system rather than the views of exclusively other atheists. As a Christian, it is well worth it for me to understand my own beliefs deeper by seeing atheist critiques, and I believe it has only made me a more devout believer. Either way, God bless, and have a fantastic day.

While I think it's wrong to avoid conversations, it's a simple fact that all major arguments for god are illogical and their logical errors have been explained to theists for years. So in that respect it's definitely true nobody has any compelling argument. I just think it's still worthwhile to keep having the discussion, as there are still millions left who haven't heard the reasons that believers' reasons for believing are illogical. As long as _some_ still have these conversations, that's important (at least until religious belief falls below 5-15% or something, where it's so irrelevant that debunking it isn't as important).

I am familiar with you from your interactions with WLC and Douglas Murray (to name a couple), and I have always found you to be one of the most articulate and fair voices even though your personal beliefs are often different than mine. I really appreciate your intellectual integrity and respectful demeanor. On the flip side, I was surprised that Dawkins suggests that Christians should say that unsightly OT events simply never happened. That would be disingenuous. If they hold to the veracity of the OT as a historical text, they absolutely ought to wrestle with the ramifications. I can respect anyone who says “is this true, and if so, then what?” But I can’t respect someone who says “I wish this weren’t true, so I will conveniently pretend it is not so.” Dawkins’ promotion of this kind of self-serving expediency seems to be a reflection of his own character.

I'm no theologian, but I don't think Dawkins means Christians should say it never happened if they actually believe it did. I think he may interpret these Biblical stories as simply stories, not intended to be taken as true. I was never a believer, but I was brought up in the UK so am most familiar with the C of E that Richard Dawkins was brought up in, and which is the least dogmatic set of beliefs I know of!

Many Christians do not hold to the veracity of the OT as a historical text. First and foremost because many of the books are demonstrably not intended as historical text. E.g: WLC does not take the OT as historical text (or at least not in its entirety), highlighting in particular the start of Genesis as "Clearly False" if taken literally.

And then to stop the argument ceasing at Deism he makes this god a personal god because the wheels set in motion would lead to us (as if that even slightly matters). It's wall to wall bullshit. Hitchens struggled a little because his strengths are not in cosmology, but essentially beat him handedly by calling out the internal inconsistencies in WLC's claims.

Richard Dawkins doesn't debate. He smooches up to people who agree with him, and oozes contempt for people who don't. He feels that people who don't agree with him are diseased. Alex is wonderful. Great respect for him as he always engages kindly with the other side. Frankly, this is my opinion of Dawkins: he is putting on a facade of humility. Personalities clash, but Craig & Alex have had great conversations, while Dawkins true pride becomes clear. Richard Dawkins calling someone else pompous is the pot calling the kettle black lol. William always comes off as very respectful in every interview and debate I've seen him in. I can't really say the same of Mr Dawkins. There is literally 0 usefulness from debating Mr Dawkins on anything as he's already admitted that even if "God came down to show Himself to me I would not believe in His existence." Dr Craig is far more than just a "professional debater" and the way in which Mr Dawkins speaks comes off more that he simply just doesn't want interact with someone who actually challenges him from the perspective of being persuasive to the audience.

Based on current science he suspects them to be homo heidelbergensis (early himinins) that lived around 700.000 years ago. These stories in the old testament of the distant past like Genesis 1-11 - Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, Genesis 6 Sons of God, Henoch, Noah's flood, tower of Babel and such he interprets as mytho-history - the people in these stories are historical persons that really lived, but the stories are clothed in mythological motifs as was common practice in ancient Mesopotamian literature such as the Sumerian kings list in which the kings are real people, but the reigns of thousands of years are obviously mythological.

Some of the top comments are saying some variation of, "Ha, John Lennox beat that ol' Dawkins in their debates!" It's just hilarious to see how differently people view the same debates. Some of Lennox's points were very weak. Towards the end of one of their debates, Lennox asked Dawkins if he didn't *wish* Christianity were true. I don't remember the exact wording but that was the gist. The astonished Dawkins, astonished at such an empty question, responded that of course one might wish something is true but that doesn't make it true. Regardless of which side of the God debate you're on, Lennox had nothing and that argument from Lennox, if we even call it an argument, made that very clear.

In "The God Delusion", he said the opposite of what you assert, so I'm skeptical of your claim. Are you sure he didn't say that he doesn't believe there is any evidence that COULD convince him, because if so, then that is just him offering an honest opinion of the existance of sufficient evidence. I also don't believe there exists any evidence that COULD convince me, but if I am ever exposed to sufficient evidence to convince me, then (by definition) I will be convinced. He is really good at making his stance _appear_ to be oh-so-educated and valid by employing various debating tactics that are _only_ good for exactly that. Dawkins does not want to debate Craig, because he would need too much time to prepare for it. Craig uses complex and convoluted sophistry, which are like riddles, and he insists that you must solve all these riddles in order to prove him wrong. Moreover, Craig immediately spits many of such riddles at once and he opens several complex subjects, like morality, creation, design, etc. Then he basically states that all these points prove that he is correct, unless you go through each and every one of a thousand points that he has made, which are absolutely all nonsense, and debunk them. You really need to prepare extremely well if you want to beat Craig at his game. Dawkins does not want to do that and it's even arguable whether he would be able to do it even if he wanted.

He’d probably have sub par responses to Craig’s cosmological and historical resurrection arguments that he’s concluded it’s better to avoid for the sake of his reputation. If not, then why give so many irrelevant reasons for not debating him considering you think all theist arguments aren’t even convincing but also uncompelling. I think it would be a waste of time debating WLC anyway, as he constantly trots out the same time-worn arguments for god's existence. That's why I loved Hitchens' debate with him at Biola, where Hitch goes off the debate format and starts to throw various faith-challenging scenarios at him. I wouldn't debate William Lane Craig on God either. (Though not for precisely the same reasons Richard Dawkins cites.) Craig has literally spent his entire adult professional life creating arguments to establish God's existence, etc. He's also very self-confident, and has done this kind of thing many times before. Thus, when he states "deduction 1 of premise 2", I wouldn't know what to say. At least not "live". This may sound like his arguments are so compelling that I'm intellectually frightened of him. No. If I spent spent half the time on God as he has, then I could write my responses in print or on line (rather than live). As it is, debating with William Lane Craig is much like debating with a politician - except that politicians don't use phrases like "nomological", "necessary and sufficient conditions", "deduction", etc. So I wouldn't debate Craig, just as I wouldn't debate Donald Trump/Hilary Clinton or Anjem Choudhary (the militant Islamist).

I recalled the night my sisters and I were both woken up by someone playing our toy drum. The beat was slow but loud enough to wake both of us in different parts of the house. To which my colleagues said it was possibly caused by rats! At that moment, I realised that these 'intellectuals', evidence based thinkers totally failed to take in the evidence and put forward their preposterous explanation - rats playing my toy drum! I'm pretty sure Dawkins is not "afraid" of debating WLC (or anyone). Indeed, he seems really convinced that it's impossible for the other side to find good arguments. He is really honest by saying that the true reason for not debatting him is that he has no respect for him and finds him despicable.

Well, but anyone can just say they find their opponent despicable and avoid debating. What if it were reversed and WLC refused to debate Dawkins because he considered Dawkins despicable (for reasons x, y and z)? Is that really what we want? Secondly, if Dawkins, as you say, "seems really convinced that it's impossible for the other side to find good arguments", then it would presumably be a total walk in the park for Dawkins - and a great opportunity to rack up an easy victory against one of the most prominent sufferers of the "delusion" he writes about, and by doing so, free many others of the same delusions. Why not go for it?

WLC is definitely more adept at philosophical debates than Dawkins, but he really dropped the ball when he recently claimed that he "lowers the bar" for Christianity. He has also claimed that if he had been told that Christianity offers a 1 in a million chance of being true (or something like that), that he could not pass up on those odds. Basically, WLC admits that he's only a Christian because Christians got to him first before Muslims, Jews or other religions that would offer similar or better odds.

Tell me u have never heard wlc speak without telling me uve never heard him speak He very clearly says that other religions, he specified Islam in that particular debate, they don't have even close to the amount of evidence Christianity does To compare the enormous amount of evidence for Christianity with any other religion, u would have to be brain-dead I didn't even make such arguments when I was an atheist 😂

I'm sorry but please cite where WLC claims/indicates that he would have been Muslim or another religion if they got to him first. That does not at all align with his personal testimony, his doctorate studies, nor his catalogue of authored books, speeches, debates, and so on. One of WLC biggest theological claims is the shock and extensive evidence he found for Jesus' death and resurrections while doing his doctorate studies. The Quran denies Christs death on the cross and resurrections - two claims that WLC defends vigorously and claims have strong historical evidence among both believers and non-believers. This does not sound like a man who based his decision on a first come first serve basis or implied odds but I am willing to be corrected here.

Same podcast where he mentions that he lowers the bar for Christianity, which you conveniently chose not to address. I've heard WLC speak plenty of times and I was not comparing the evidence of one religion vs another. I was addressing two rather weak arguments by WLC.

You might find it helpful to listen to WLC’s follow up responses after he made those particular remarks you’re referencing. I felt it provided sufficient clarification. I’d shy away from viewing only rationally rules content on the matter. Best to hear from the direct source. WLC most certainly has not admitted he’d just as likely believe any of the other religions you mentioned had he had exposure to them first. If he has, provide sources.

Craig is a sophist, his arguments are lacking and baseless, essencially they are just as bad as any theists you happen to speak to randomly. The difference is that Craig can articulate them better and somewhat hide where the flaws are in his thinking. I mean not from anyone that has any shred of critical thinking skills, but from the average theists. And he's dishonest too, seen countless times when someone pointed out the obvious logical fallacy in his reasoning during a debate. And later on he just used yet again the same argument in the same fashion. He doesn't care about the truth, he just intrested in obfuscating enaugh that his audience can justify remaining religious.

Craig isn't a sophist because I disagree with his views. He's a sophist because he makes sophistic arguments. In his debate with Sean Carroll, Craig argued that if the universe can simply pop into being, why not bicycles too? Yes, that's right - he asked why don't fucking BICYCLES pop into existence in front of us and thought that was a valid rebuttal to Carroll's argument about the scientific origins of the universe. That is textbook sophistry.
