This has been an extremely informative video and thank you so much Dave for going to the time and trouble of breaking every cost down. My next questions are a bit like asking 'how long is a piece of string.' If you can answer them or have some idea I would be most grateful. Today a year later from when you made this vlog has currency drops affected your monthly expense. Compared to say US prices, would you have any idea on how much medication (by comparison) costs in Cambodia (and can a doctor's script be used to purchase online)? Also do you know how much insurance compares to Western prices? I realise these are questions that may not be relevant to you. However if you have any idea, even as a 'guesstimation,' I would be more than grateful. Thanks for sharing!

Don't know about Cambodia, but I live next door in Thailand and I rent a studio for 300 a month, I like to drink beer, so that makes my outlay a bit more than it would otherwise be. My utilities usually run about 30 to 40 dollars a month. I seldom use AC, I get by fine with electric fans. My landlord supplies WIFI, so that's not an expense.. Cost of living is highly individual. I have to have my western food, so that makes my outlay a bit more.

Soon To Be Self-employed I've not yet been to PP personally. But I know a few people there and I would say PP is easier to find a teaching job. There are way more International schools there. But SR is smaller and has more of a small town vibe. I've HEARD there is less crime here and SR is also cheaper in relation to apartments and tuk tuks. However, some people would argue that PP has more things for expats to do and has a very active community. So I wouldn't say one is better, it depends on your lifestyle choice. 👍

Hi to both of you! I know it`s been over a year you've posted this video, am wondering if you guys are still there, same job, same rent? I have a question and hope you can give me a real answer! I had planned on being there for september this year but some heart problems came up and I have to wait a little longer before I can do the trip. I wanted to know if none natives can buy or rent scooters/motorcycles or not either in SR or in Cabodia in general??? (It might take me a while before I can walk okay for long distances, am short on physical endurance and might be for a while...) If yes, you know how much for buying or renting please? I also wanted to know if I could find in SR a adult ed job teaching english? I did teach in Canada (am native canadian) and also in Morocco. I don`t have a degree and don`t have TEFL or any other certificate, only 7 years eperience with teaching adults. Thanks in advance for your reply, I pray you are all good and are still living the dream! TC
@DaveDoesCambodia5 жыл бұрын
Hello! Yes, I'm still here. Different job, but same apartment with the same rent. Cambodia is cracking down on foreigners riding motos here. It's changed since I've been here. Now, you must have a valid drivers license from your country and go to Phnom Penh and apply for a Cambodian license. You must also have a long term, valid visa. And, of course, must have it registered and always wear a helmet. Motos are fairly cheap. A brand new 50cc scooter goes for $520. You can find used ones cheaper of course. Without a TEFL, it's going to be very difficult to get any kind of teaching job. And, while some schools offer English programs for adults, the majority are to teach children. You could offer a tutoring service, but you would still need at least a TEFL.
@TheAyasan5 жыл бұрын
@@DaveDoesCambodia Thank you so much for your promt reply :) I did take note of the academy you mentioned to someone else, i'll see if I can get a TEFL from Canada with them, online maybe, I do have time to do it since I can't leave soon... right now, I can't see myself teaching little kids, I need to be healthier and regain my patience mostly!!! For the scooters, that's good news. My drivers liscence will be given back to me soon so yes, I could do all you mentioned from PP without a problem. BTW, is there a way to get a hold of your landlord? I saw your place and your ex neighbor Bill's place (CambodiYeah!) and it's nice and big enough. Love that it seems close to almost everything... I prefer a place of my own, don't want to get a bigger place with strangers to share costs (been there, done that!) I also wanted to ask you if shool does start in september and when does it end? (Vacations?) I think i'll offer my services for a NGO at first for a cession or a few months. I know there are scams in that regard, if you go know any ligit NGO's in SR, please let me know, it would be much appreiated. I pray you love your new job and still loving your life in Cambodia, cheers!

Here's the contact info for my advisor: Call me directly at 312-971-6308 - Fill out this contact form - Email me directly at amanda@internationalteflacademy.com Mention my name, David Royce, and you'll get a discount! My landlord mostly always has one or two apartments available. When you get closer to arriving, I'll see what's up and let you know. There are several NGO'S to start with. Availability depends on the time of year and if they need volunteers at the time. Schools here are year round so no summer vacations. @DaveDoesCambodia4 жыл бұрын
Hello. With that monthly income you'll be able to live very comfortably here. Even if you choose a bigger western style apartment with more amenities you'll still have money left each month. A $300 apartment here is considered a luxury! Now, with the virus, there are extra expenses however. They require foreigners to have proof of $50,000 in insurance and they just announced a $3000 fee for everyone entering the country for Covid19 tests, quarantine costs, and cremation costs should someone test positive and pass away. I'm not sure how long this rule will stay in effect so hopefully next year when you're ready they'll have done away with it.

Late response, but $1000/month is pretty comfortable there, man. I'm moving to Phnom Penh in May/June myself and I'm expecting to come into a teaching job making 800/1000 month. It depends on your lifestyle like Dave said, but with a grand a month you'll definitely have enough to go out a couple times a week and still have some left over for emergencies/random expenses/savings.

@michaelluchesi62963 жыл бұрын
You can that very easy, I spend $2,500.00 per month and pay for two homes (1 is a condo in Siem Reap 144 sq. meters), buying not renting. Support 6 people including two kids going to private school and still have money left over some months.

Lol you just made me realize that I would have to win the lottery to retire in America. Why would you want to over pay for basic living? Why is America so over priced?

Actually how much you spent ??
@DaveDoesCambodia6 жыл бұрын
For MY lifestyle, between $600-$700 a month. Each person is different though, so some might spend more and some might spend less. But this, for me, is all-inclusive. It includes everything. :)

Dave Does Cambodia 700 bucks is ridiculously cheap! Once youre working your going to be minted. If you say 700 is baseline, then really all i think id need to add is a few massages a week and a gym/pool membership, so maybe 100/150 ontop

How do you get a one year vesa im moving to cambodea next month i was told it is hard to get a one year vesa now do i get it at the airport or how should i get my one year vesa
@DaveDoesCambodia6 жыл бұрын
joseph a durkin Hi! You get a visa on arrival at the airport. However, you need to make sure you get either an EG or EB visa and NOT a tourist visa. This visa is only good for one month. Before it expires you can extend it in country for one, three, or six months. Unless you are getting a retirement visa you cannot extend it for a year without a letter of employment and a legal work permit. A work permit takes about a month to get. You can extend your visa every three or six months, but without a letter of employment you will probably have to do a visa run. Which means leaving the country overnight or longer (at least 24 hours) and starting the process over upon re-entering Cambodia.

Dave Does Cambodia Wait - in the video you say a one year visa is $300. That’s what I’ve read everywhere too. Just find an agent, give them $300 and you’re set for a year. In your reply above, you’re saying you have to do visa runs all the time. I’ve heard of that in Thailand but never Cambodia. Could you please clarify?
@DaveDoesCambodia6 жыл бұрын
Mark Olwick Hello! A one year visa is about $300 a year. BUT, in order to get that 12 month extension you must either have a retirement visa or a letter of employment with a stamp from your employer and your work permit. If you have those things, there should be no issue. Without them, the business, or "E" type, visas can only be extended for a limited amount of times before you would have to leave the country and come back to start the process over. You may come in on an EB visa and it's good for one month. You may extend it without any documents for up to another three month period (making it a single entry type extension). After that, you have to either do a visa run or change it to an EG visa type. Doing so will allow you another 6 months (3 months initially and one 3 month extension) in country. After that you will need a letter of employment and a work permit if you do not wish to do visa runs. Keep in mind you have to possess an EB visa to obtain your work permit. These are the "rules", but if you go to the right travel agency and have extra cash, things could be arranged. Late last year Cambodia started enforcing all the visa rules that, until then, were largely ignored. It's been a source of debate and contention within the expat community ever since. These are the rules as I understand them as of right now. I hope this helps clarify things somewhat. 👍

can you get a cambodian bank account as a foreigner?
@DaveDoesCambodia6 жыл бұрын
S Shin Hello! Yes you can. If you have the supporting documents, like in the West, and are not on a tourist visa, you can open an account at almost any bank. You'll get a debit card and there won't be any charges to use that banks ATM's.
@SS-br5ff6 жыл бұрын
I only have about 11k cash. Do you recommend I bring that with me in cash or should I leave it in a US bank then wire transfer later?
@DaveDoesCambodia6 жыл бұрын
S Shin Definitely leave it in your account at home until you get here and set yourself up with an apartment and stuff. But if you know you're going to stay, transfer it as soon as you can to avoid fees from the ATM. 👍
