Great informative video Jen - The conservative government removed rent control since the posting of the video. Now a one bed is anywhere between 1100 - 1500 on average per month. 1500 to as hight as 3000 for 2 and 3 bedroom. Everything else mentioned in video is on point. I thought of getting a condo in Moncton and looked for about a year, but for a person like me not needing a mortgage, it is not worth it, as the fees, property taxes, and utilities was just insanely too high especially for someone like me on three pensions. An equivalent condo in BC would only cost me about 550 a month for strata fee, heat, lights, water and property taxes, but keep in mind BC has a generous home owners grant for those that occupy their property especially for seniors plus property taxes are much lower in BC. For a senior in BC, property tax on a property assessed at 500K is a bout $50 a month. I pay 98 a month in property tax in BC, but it is that high because it is not my primary residence. If I lived in my property, my property tax would be 23 a month. My tenants pay for hydro, which is about 25 to 30 a month. So if moved back into my condo, my expenses would be about 500 a month, which includes strata fee, property taxes, and all utilities including internet.

Property taxes in New Brunswick are insanely high, in large part because the cities are so spread out and huge, and yet very small populations.

Everybody is scared of Vancouver because of how expensive it is, but gosh, these prices are no joke, either (excluding housing, obv)!! $1.443 per $100 of assessed value is just insane. A $350K house would be more than $5000! That's how much owners of multi-million houses in Vancouver pay! The transit price, on the other hand, is very good, $68 per month is a bargain. It costs $105 in Vancouver (Zone 1), but in addition to bus rides, the fee also includes unlimited skytrain rides. Dining out is not cheap either. I know great places in Vancouver that charge less than the prices mentioned in this video. So, if those prices are meant to be averages, then it's definitely too much. I think the only reason one would move there would be the relatively cheaper housing market.

Well noticed!! We pay very high property taxes here and it’s often a huge shock to new residents. Our cost of living is very high. Groceries, gas (1.83/litre) etc. Houses are not as much lower as people think either

Seniors on modest income pay $45 a year for CMBC transit. What I like about CMBC is you can hop off and on repeatedly in either direction for 90 minutes on one fare. In Fredericton the bus ran only every half hour and the fare was only good for one trip one way! I like the CMBC system so much so that I leave the car at home for short jaunts and even doing light errands; I find it to be a relaxing and social experience. One thing I worried about when moving back to BC was what my car insurance would be, but was surprised it wasn't much more than NB. but then I have a great driver's abstract, which the private insurers in NB didn't give me much credit for. As for renters and rentals. It is interesting that the media tells us about the high rents of new listings in the lower mainland of BC, but not of the renters who have been renting for years or even decades in the tens of thousands that pay lower rents that have luckily managed to not get evicted. Rents prices unheard of for long term renters in NB because it has no rent caps. I envy my best friend that lives in Vancouver West and lives in an older apt for 7 years now with over 1100 sq footage and pays 1200 a month, which includes heat and water, but not hydro which is about 65 every two months. His daughter has been renting a newer condo for 4 years in White Rock near the water; pays 1600 a month includes utilities except hydro. Then there is my hobby buddy, for 5 years, rents in White Rock on top of the hill near the centre in on a older, but well kept apt bldg for 1500 a month that includes utilities, parking, cycle garage, and cable, but not hydro. His father for 5 years lives in Ocean Park in a newer very small condo with heated floors and pays 980 a month and that includes a parking space, cycle garage, and all utilities! My cycle buddy, who is poor and lives with his mother, pays 1000 a month for a garden suite in Ocean Park that includes all utilities; been there for 9 years. My friend that has recently moved back to BC a year ago rents a huge garden suite in a mansion in Langley for 1000 a month; all utilities included and a outdoor parking space. A couple I know from NS rent a newly renovated garden suite they have been in for a year in Cloverdale and pay 1300 a month; all utilities included and two outdoor parking spaces plus their landlord lets them have pets. And finally, my brother in law rents a house a few blocks away from VGH and pays 2200 a month; been renting that house with a garage and basement for 8 years from Singapore owners that are obviously not greedy and highly likely have no mortgage on it. At times I don't think he realizes how lucky he is, as if they ever sell the place, he will likely have to leave the lower mainland to rent a house that would suit his needs. I know of quite a few people in NB that are long term renters over the last 4 years that have seen their rents that have gone up 50 to 100 percent; some had to leave the province because of it. It is harder for a NBer to see rent go up so high, as they were used to a budget for years not to mention low wages compared to other provinces. As for folk from ON and BC, the rent increases seen in NB are considered affordable for them, but I found NB too pricey for my liking especially after utilities and groceries. It took living in NB for 3 years to realize how much I took BC for granted even the lower mainland. If coming to the lower mainland and need to rent, my advice is do like most that get a decent rental at a more affordable price do - do the old fashioned thing - pound the pavement for at least a week or two and avoid listings on the net and Facebook. That is how the couple I know from NS found their lovely garden suite and my friend that moved back to BC found his.

Most newer condos and apts have both in them. Costly in the winter, plus those heat pumps dry out the place so you need a humidifier another thing that drives up your energy bill.

@@lynnpatenaude5548 I only used AC in NB when I live in a south facing place when the temps inside got up to 30C with the windows open at night. In BC, I don't use AC. I'm at a higher altitude and can handle it being 28 indoors.

Cost of living in Moncton is way too high for what it is. Also if you have a home paid for, your cost of living is still more than that of living in BC with a home paid for; something many overlook when moving to NB in seek of a lower cost of living. What I have found talking to many younger folk here over the last two years is many youth are not moving away because they feel trapped by unwanted commitments or just can't afford to live in the nicer places that cost more to rent or purchase like that of Moncton and Fredericton. There are no lack of young professionals that are still leaving especially those priced out of the market that have become renters especially those that have realized their proportion of renter household income spent on rent and utilities is much higher here than some equivalent size places in BC and Ontario where there are better jobs with higher pay. It's telling when NB is supposedly such an affordable place, but we still can't attract the human capital we really need.

Many good points. NB is not for everyone and there are personal reasons why some choose to live and or move here. I am a life long NB'er and I love so many things about the maritimes. There are hardships here and hardships elsewhere as well. people are still moving here and within the province daily, and I try and educate as best I can on living here.

Id recommend New Brunswick only if you are looking for rural land. We sold in southern ontario, and for the price got an equivalant house, plus a new barn, eight acres of fenced horse pasture and 85 acres of forest. But it was in bad shape and needing rehabilitiation. However, its housing costs that are the issue. Fifteen minutes from moncton you can buy land and build for a fraction of anywhere else. We've lived here eight years, and weather wise every year has been different. However, we haven't had the summers of massive forest fires others did. We got an insane amount of rain this year, now nothing but sun. The last two winters have been great, not BC great, but not very cold. Maybe two weeks of real cold. There are TONS of great things about New Brunswick, including New Brunswickers. One thing the govenrment is NOT known for are decent governments. Not to be partisan here, but in liberal nova scotia during covid when rents started skyrocketing, the govenrment put rent control on immediately. In New Brunswick they refused for ages, then brought in a meagre one, which as you saw above, the govenrment has now rescinded. Public transit is insanely run, its clear its a car culture and they want it to stay that way. The buses are very nice, but the transit routes are just crazy. As a driver on the main streats of Moncton I know civic engineers who said nepotism got most city planners their job and it shows. Driving in a city that size should not be so horrific. Drivers are great, road design is horrible. Public services are garbage as mentioned above. About five years ago the homelessness problem could have been addressed. There was a civic meeting where tons of people got together and literally would have started building micro homes but the governments here fight them every step of the way, as is the case in most cities. But I can't vouch for the people highly enough, and I've even talked to immigrants, at least professional ones, who talk about how friendly maritimers are, and many immigrants say they feel much more welcome than in europe. But again, the government here is just godawful at every level, I know native new brunswickers always say 'well governmetn is bad everywhere', but I've lived all over and government here really takes it to a whole other level. I know two elections ago a new immigrant was actually going to run as leader of the liberal party, the party got so freaked out by the idea that they raised the cost of running for leader to $30,000 to make sure it couldn't happen again. The provincial governmetn refused to even allow a hindu prayer ONCE in the legislature. And this government is about as worst as I've seen a government, and I've seen plenty of bad ones.
