The pace of life is slower here, but ,there is so much to enjoy . We have three kids and there is no where else we would rather raise them. We moved to NB from Ontario two years ago. Baseboard heating by itself is very expensive. If you add a mini split (heat/cool) and/or a wood stove or pellet stove, you can cut your heating in half! In winter of 2019/2020, some of our utility bills for baseboard only were $500+. This winter we added a wood stove, at most I had two bills for $300, all others were in $200 zone. As for the food, if you go to the markets, instead of the grocery stores, you’ll save money. Shop local and save. Best produce here. You’re right, though. The pace is slower and much more outdoors. I love it. I find people quite friendly in general. As for restaurants, in Fredericton I have three favourites: The Cinnamon Cafe (vegetarian/vegan Iranian), The Avatar Food truck (Indian cuisine) and Hana’s Ethiopian cafe. They are authentic and delicious. I totally agree that people that move here should adapt to the lifestyle. It is very different, but good different. I love it here and I’ll never move back to Ontario.

The Moncton area is also lucky to be able to attract young .... vital “kids” like yourselves. I hope that you will continue to make our city ... your forever home. Toronto is only a short flight away when your feet get itchy. I can see that you still miss aspects of living in one of North America’s largest metropolises. That’s normal. However.... it’s worth trading life in the “fast lanes” for another one which allows you to “smell the roses” and have the time to REALLY talk to your kids. It all moves fast. Welcome home.

Welcome! We’re on the Kingston Peninsula. I’m from Montreal originally. The biggest adjustment was restaurants, so here are a few food suggestions. BTW NBers travel between the three big cities (LOL) very freely, so don’t worry about a 1h30 - 2h drive to get a good meal or shop. Moncton: The Blue Olive focuses on Lebanese/Mediterranean and is simply the best with amazing prices (in Dieppe). I can’t speak highly enough of the quality and perfect spice blends. A must try. ASA Sushi is a great place for less expensive and great sushi. Osaka Hibatchi is a it more expressive but the vibe is great and they have seasonal fish. Taj Mahal rivals any big Canadian city Indian and is a must try. Les Brumes du Coude is so amazing as a French / Fusion experience, small and friendly. Fredericton: Flavas is a very good Caribbean place, but I still haven’t found great Roti or Patties. The Palate is fusion done well and the food always is presented immaculately. Luna Pizza is one of the best Toronto/Montreal style pizzas in the province (Vito’s is our local go to). Sunshine Diner might just be the best breakfast in the province. Must try the ham! It’s very much a diner, looks super local and is so welcoming. Grab a coffee at the door sit and relax in a very homey atmosphere. Saint John: Lemongrass is a place I could eat every day. It’s Thai and Indian and wow to they shine. Sadly not naan like Moncton’s Taj, but their curry, all their curry, are amazing and would rival anything. My wife and I love it. Italian By Night is a beautiful evening out experience. I was never a fan of eating Italian out, but after going here my mind was changed. It’s a more high class offering, but well worth it. A wonderful date place. MiMiMi is authentic Chinese and I doubt there is an equivalent in NB. I’ll recommend two great stores for different ingredients: “Spice” in Dieppe (next to the McD’s near the mall) does Indian, Caribbean and Mexican. And in Saint John, “Freshville” for anything Chinese/Asian and Indian. Reach out anytime :-)

MOncton is growing much faster than the other two cities. Saint John has a million dollar ocean view though, and great parks that you don't find in Moncton. Fredericton is kind of small townish, as government cities tend to be. There are TONS of places for development around Moncton. ANd some of the larger towns are great as well. Buctouche is a beautiful town right on the ocean. Sussex is halfway between Moncton and Saint John and has a very lively artistic scene and agricultural industry. For large groups of people, I think northern new Brunswick is seriously undervalued and a group of like twenty people could practically BUY a whole town. But Miramichi is almost a city, and thankfully is long past its days when it had numerous mills that made the place smell like rotten eggs. Now its a nice big town.

We live just outside of Moncton, so things are a little more expensive with insurance, septic, well, we save on heat during winter as we have a wood stove. We love our quiet place, and it is really nice to see new residences appreciating NB for wha it is.

Coming from southern Ontario to new Brunswick. I find the cost of living out here in New Brunswick much more higher. Hydro rates are more expensive and to try and heat your house with electricity will put you in the poor house. Provincial sales tax are 15 percent in new Brunswick. Two percent higher than Ontario. If you're fortunate enough to find a house heated by natural gas. You pay more for natural gas out here rather then in Ontario. Minimum wage is much lower in new Brunswick than it is in Ontario. Dining out is crazy expensive. Housing market is now getting expensive due to low supply and high demand because of so many moving out here. It's a real shame the people that are born and raised out here can not even afford to buy a house out here now. Something needs to be done for affordable housing for regular folk out here. They can't even afford to rent now because of increases. Raising minimum wage would be a good start. Anybody that holds a job and regardless of what wage they make. Should be entitled to that dream of owning a home someday. If they're making minimum wage? Obviously they're not going to have a high-end home. But they should at least have a home to call their own. In short and pending where your purchasing a home. The only thing I found cheaper in New Brunswick is the initial cost of buying a home. After that, I found it much more expensive in New Brunswick than Ontario. No doubt about it. New Brunswick is a wonderful province and people. Ontario is amazing and lots more to see and do of any kind of life style you choose to live. But realistically. People are moving east because to own a home in Ontario is no longer in the realm of the possibility or dream, because of an insanely high housing market. So good news for new Brunswick and businesses..:))) Ps,, also consider that you may not be able to get a doctor for a long time,..

I agree that it xan be more expensive in terms of cost of living I do believe that the Premier must make some immediate changes to keep the province growing. Minimum wage is ridiculous given the fact that groceries and restaurants and retail is more expensive. The fact that taxes are 15% with such low wages baffles me. Minimum wage here should be $15-$16

Yep, NB cost of living is even higher than BC when it comes to running a home. If you have a home paid for or almost paid for in BC, you are better off there in regards to expenses. Also the provincial income tax rate in NB is almost twice of that of ON and BC. No rent control in NB like they have in BC.

I agree with you. We also moved from Ontario 3 years ago. The only thing that is cheaper here - houses. The rest is more expensive. Even the seafood! Not too many people who are moving to NB know that the medical system is terrible. Prepare to wait to get a family doctor for several years. We haven't got our family doctor yet. If you need to get any medical help you would likely need to go to ER. And spend several hours there. Our average waiting time is 8 hours. Walk in clinics - another sad story. There is only 1 still opened in Fredericton as per my knowledge. You can get there only if you call them first. Guess what - it is nearly impossible to get through! I stopped trying last year. Not sure if it is better now. For us the medical system here is the main reason why we may leave the province.

Research thoroughly what income you expect to make, as the provincial income tax rate here is high and it has the highest property taxes in the county. I can be costly to have a house even if it is paid for compared to some other places in Canada.

Here is something to consider if moving to NB after selling your home for a good price elsewhere in order to afford a house here; you are just creating the same problem that you left - pricing many out of the market, but they won't have the options like you did though.

Have you guys encountered other black people out there? I too am thinking of moving out there but couldn't imagine my kids being the only black kids especially coming from Toronto. Any racist incidents since you've been there? The incident in London, ON has a lot of minorities rethinking moving to these smaller towns and communities. While Canada prides itself on being multicultural, we know that there isn't much diversity outside of the major cities. Kudos to you guys for taking the plunge.

The diversityis no where close to gta. Our kids are the only black kids in the school they go to no complaints of racism towards them so far. It is a concern given the current climate of the whole world. Honestly on my day to day I do not brace myself for racism bc I do not welcome those experiences. If people are staring or saying anything I don't notice bc I just go bout my business and say hello to people and keep it moving bc most people here are polite. It is not my job to sit and think on who is being genuine or not that is too much work. As the province grows diversity will come. The best part about decisions is if you don't like something you can always change it, like moving back. That is what I told myself! Hope that helps

The diversity is definitely no way near as the major cities, but it’s more diverse in the Moncton and Fredericton area. I’m black Caribbean and have been living in Moncton for the past 3 years and it’s definitely more diverse than when I moved.

I volunteer at several food banks and the diversity is increasing steadily. Of course we generally see the immigration from other countries, I would say more south america, but also some from the carribean and africa. We usually see them for about a month as they look for jobs, and then don't see them again but I've been working on my spanish we get that many from south america. This is in Moncton, and I suspect since they have little money they are all renting for now and probably in the poorer part of the city. Since the city is at least relatively large, its likely that the 'only black kids in class' is quite possible, but not so much the 'only black kids in the school'. But my wife works at the hospital and when I drive her I see lots of black people around the streets. LOTS. As for racism, thats a tough one. This is a province where the french and english have constantly been sort of at war, so I don't think the people who are really racist can figure out if they are supposed to dislike people of another colour or another language! At the hospital I know there have been people from Morocco and right now a new girl is from, damn, some place in Africa, I forget the name. The moroccan guys were really nice, they almost cried to hear that we had been to Morocco and loved the food in Fez because they were that lonely. They moved to QUebec where there is a larger moroccan population. LOTS of professionals end up moving to QUebec if they speak french because wages really are bad here. REALLY bad here. Somebody above mentioned that we need tradespeople, but in part thats because wages here are so low. I worked at the local cannabis plant with about a hundred people, we had tons of phillipino ladies, I made a point of asking several of the black guys if they encountered racism, just for something to talk about really, but they said they hadn't. And we also know Indians and have been at parties where people constantly talk about how friendly the people are here. So in short I see people from almost all strata of society, but of course I'm white so only go by what people tell me. I would probably say the one time a person would experience racism is if they ran for office, just because politics is so nasty now, but I've noticed several africans running for office. They dont' win, but its great to see it. This province NEEDS immigrants, and if you DO encounter racism, just remember that behind that ignoramus is about a dozen people ecstatic you are here. This province has always suffered an OUT migration problem. So when people come here and LIKE it, then usually people are pretty happy to hear it. Say that you like it better than Ontario or Nova Scotia and you'll make a friend for life. There was a report about a year ago about a large african family, I think there was around 12 of them, and they moved into a small town around Edmunston, which is a large french town on the Quebec border, and that would be a place where I'd think there would be racism, but the family said they loved it and had no problem. In that case I believe it becuase northern New brunswick is losing people faster than southern NB, so those people are VERY happy to see ANYBODY move in, because it means its less likely their town will die. THe good thing about the Moncton area is that there are enough visible minorities that 'singling out' people is a lot harder. Southwestern New Brunswick is the 'conservative base', I remember about ten years ago when I lived in ontario reading about a gay couple in St. George who were holding hands getting beat up by some 'good ol boys' in a truck. St. George is close to the US border, close to Saint John. I lived in Waterloo ontario, which was probably about one third asian and one third Indian when we left. I think I see more black people in Moncton than I ever did in Waterloo. Waterloo wasn't toronto though. But there is a lot of poverty here, sometimes racism comes out of that, but I've always found institutions to be far more racist than the population. The police here are pretty white, and not sure that i'd paint them with a different brush than Toronto, but maybe I'm being unfair in that.

Welcome our channel! Firstly most people we meet here in NB are very welcoming! We do not allow people who are insecure, ignorant, uneducated/unaccepting to the truth that we are all humans to be a factor. That is their issue to deal with not ours. When they stare and look upset it can be annoying but I do not internalize their feelings. Nb is not very diverse at the moment but seems to be growing. I hope I was able to answer your question or concern.

How is local hospitals? Can you find family doctor easily and how long do you have to wait for a specialist usually?

It next to impossible to find a family doctor and this province has one of the worst access to primary healthcare. Specialists are few and far between especially for "non urgent" matters and the waiting list can be 3 years to see one. It is so bad, that walk-in clinics are mostly visited by people that already have a family doctor, but don't want to wait weeks or months to see their doctor. Also walk in clinics are few and far between also and do not do the procedures or treatments seen done in some other provinces. Hospital are OK, but are too swamped - about one out of three NB hospital beds are occupied with alternative level of care patients. Also seniors and other especially with unhealthy lifestyles, put a burden on the system so when covid came along, it exacerbated the situation. Keep in mind NB has some of the most unhealthiest and unfit folk in the country not to mention inactive with some real poor eating habits. This is not the place to be if you need the consistency of see a family doctor especially for kids. It is so backward here that most lab work is still done in hospitals.

Herbicides are overused here and also a lot of heavy metal toxins in the environment especially in the Saint John area.

Hi guys, I have a question. We live in Alberta, it's beautiful but I hate the loooong winter, how's the winter time there? Here we reached-40° some days during winter, and in my opinion there is no spring or fall, that seasons are too short, even the summer is too short. So I was thinking to move somewhere else and I was looking east. Big cities like Toronto are too expensive for us, so I'm curious about new brunswick. I can see that costs of buying houses are less expensive, and as a family with kids we love outside activities, I'm just worried about the seasons and especially the winter. Answer me if you can. Winters are long in NB and even spring can have some cold days. It's mid May here and still not all the trees are in full bloom. Access to healthcare is much worse in NB than that of Alberta and that's telling. Since you are in Alberta, have you considered one of the towns or cities in the Okanagan Valley in BC?

@@Madzguy007 i am still in the market for the right home but i will be buying before i move most of the realtors seem to be use to these types of deals now as countless people have now made the move from ontario to new brunswick. Just make sure you have it listed in your offer to have the home inspected and water tested before closing so you dont get stuck with unknown repairs or bad water source.

My self i am just tired of the ontario life style i have lived in other provinces and no matter the down falls i have always seen ontarios downfalls to be the worst by far. You have to be very selective in what you buy in NB. Property taxes are very high. Profiling is a big problem here.

Is it hard to make the switch over to New Brunswick healthcare versus Ontario how was that experience for you guys? From my understanding there’s a three months wait before you can get a card we are just worried if something were to happen within the three months what would we do? It can take years to get a family doctor here; some people have been on waiting lists for ten years, but if you're willing to drive hours, you might get one with 5 to 7 years. It is so bad, that there is no lack of those with family doctors that go to walk in clinics because they don't want to wait weeks or months to see their own doctor. OBGYN should not be a problem though, but seeing a gynecologist is next to impossible unless you have cancer or something very very urgent. The specialist my wife wanted to see has a three year waiting list, but it will only be about a year if she goes to a private clinic in Moncton. For my wife and I, NB healthcare has been pretty much of a nightmare. It's not very streamlined and so much is half ass here. Can you imagine going to a lab and they don't know what a standing order is or get your results weeks or months later? Or even doing the wrong test and ticking of a doctor and have to start all over again with not accountability nor apologies. Not uncommon here. Also walk in clinics are few and far between and do not do procedures and treatments that we see done in walk in clinics in other provinces. We were spoiled where we came from; we're we used to going to walk in clinics for x-rays, ECGs, stress tests, and minor surgical procedures that could be done the same day and get results back the next day or go online to look at them.

NB may not be your cup of tea. There are reasons why this is one of the least sought after places for Canadians to live, hard to retain youth and youth in the workplace, and one of the lowest retention rates for new comers.

NB is growing but I would say would take sine time for the type of industry you are looking for. I don't know of a woman is not from Canada who paints and is able to sell her art consistently. The great thing is that the world has become digital and people are able to communicate online. Depends on what you want to do. But if you come here there are jobs. The province is going through changes. It is growing pains right now but I think everywhere right now is growing pains seeing as the world is going through and new transition. Moving anywhere is a risk. Be fearly take your risk wherever you decide and know you have the right to change your mind. That is the biggest misconception is that people think they are stuck in life. Be open I wish you the best

Southern NB is mostly English, Northern NB is mostly French, Moncton is a mix. If you work in healthcare or a government job it really helps to be bilingual but otherwise it doesn’t matter too much

More snow for sure, but the last five years have been better. It depends where you live in the province. To give you an idea; a place like Saint John doesn't see its trees in full bloom until June whereas in Fredericton it is in late May.
