Costa Rica Pharmacies | Do you need a prescription???

I forgot to tell you guys that many pharmacies actually have a doctor there! So depending on what it is, you can completely skip the doctor's visits and just go straight to the pharmacy and get what you need!

I take Vertigen for an inner ear issue ($30/30 day) and the last time I got blood pressure medication it was on sale - 10 mg, 4 month supply was $11 ! No scrip for either.

I have 3-compressed disks. My spine surgeon in Canada recommended I not get surgery, but did a surgical injection into my L5 Nerve Root before I left for CR 2 years ago. He suggested if I could find a similar injection procedure here, to try that every 6-months or so. My Dr. at the farmacia does a pain and anti-inflammatory injection about every 3-months, or instead he prescribes me a pain medication that I take once in a while. I’ve never had an issues with all of the medications I am prescribed getting them from a farmacia or thru the Caja National healthcare system.

I went to the pharmacy not too long ago in Santa Ana. I was having an issue, and the Dr gave me a prescription for some meds. She just wrote in on a prescription pad, handed it to me and sent me on my way. In the US, the nurse would have to send it to a particular pharmacy and all that. When I got to the pharmacy, I handed the paper to them. I didn't have to answer any questions. They made sure that I understood how to take it and sent me on my way. I didn't get a paper with instructions or warnings. They didn't have to put me in their system, and I didn't have to wait. I paid like $13 and skipped on out of there. Easy Peasy.

I have a prescription for heart arrhythmia. Yesterday, I went to a local pharmacy and showed my empty bottle to the clerk. She looked at it and said, "Oh yes we have this." It wasn't very expensive, forty bucks for a two month supply. That said, heart medication isn't the place to economise. Good video, practical information well presented, thank you.

Re. muscle relaxers, in U.S. Daypro (don't know the generic name) is prescription only, just like heavy duty pain meds.

Yep. All muscle relaxers in the U.S. require a prescription. Reason is because, some can be addictive and there can be contraindications for some people, and imcompatibility issues with some other meds one might be taking. Also, muscle relaxers are USUALLY only prescribed for acute conditions (some people with chronic or congential issues lile cerebral palsy can use them long term because the benefits outweigh the risks), so a doctor will also want to look deeper into your problem or try something else if you're needing it longer than an the expected acute period. So it needs an rx so you can be monitored on it by licensed clinicians (MDs, NPs, PAs). Yes, I work in the medical field. 😅 RN x 14 years.

Other US muscle relaxers (in the US all require a prescription from a doctor) carisoprodol aka Soma and Flexeril. I’ve had three back surgeries in the last 10 years. I went to Costa Rica for a week and was able to buy these over-the-counter, which is fantastic!

It can be expensive. My last trip I went to the farmacia in Playas del Coco to get some ibuprofen, which one can get over-the-counter in the U.S. for very low cost. The price was staggering (I forget the cost but many times more expensive than the U.S.). I'm not sure why or if that was an anomaly. I wish basic meds like that were available in the mercados.

You probably need to ask for a different brand that’s similar or the same. I forget which one it is but there’s one exactly the same but cheaper.

So would it be better to have a prescription from the Country you are coming from to show a Costa Rica doctor for the medication you need to see a doctor for? Or would the Costa Rica doctors have to evaluate you from the beginning?

i have found they might not have the same name of your meds but it is the same, kinda like generic.

Have been on testosterone replacement for years in Canada, have been very curious how difficult it is to get pharmaceutical testosterone in Costa? Is this something you’re familiar with? Thank you!

I do TRT as well. Test and related drugs are over the counter. I use a pharmacy very near the one Sarah used. It is expensive though, compared to my prescription with insurance in the US.

You will be limited to Susteron 250 or Nebido. Cypionate or propianate do not exist here.
