Our priority should be energy independence. There's no point being net zero if we have to import energy from other countries who are not. Carbon emissions is not just a UK issue.
@James-tv4pl5 күн бұрын
Nearly all net zero initiatives involve domestically producing power in the UK. I'm not sure which ones don't tbh

Nothing wrong with being energy independent as long as the bills come down! But somehow I don’t think they will. As another comment has said, what about wave power? That is very reliable unlike wind power. Plus we should be drilling for oil and gas like there is no tomorrow! Ignore the environmentalist ‘crazies’, they are just hypocrites!

Of course the wind doesn't always blow and the sun isn't always out, but renewable energy provided around 38% of our electricity over the last year, fossil fuels only provided around 28%. With more renewables we can reduce our need to burn gas right down.
@chapsnaps15 күн бұрын
Why don't we just build more nuclear power stations to replace the decommissioned power stations that ran on fossil fuels?

Because that will cost 10x the cost or renewables and take 5 times longer to build

tidal is fabulous in it's predicatability, but the sea is a harsh environment, which makes it more expensive than combining solar, wind and batteries

I do agree 100% that the UK should invest big in green energy, the UK is a island, we can produce massive amounts of green energy, we should be a world leader like Denmark or Spain are atm. Spain is producing so much green energy, that it does not know what to do with it. We have a lot of catching up to do. The reason people do not like it, is because the perception is its massively putting up our energy bills and lots of people just can't afford them.
@davek58395 күн бұрын
Yes I don't see what the alternative is other than carrying on importing huge amounts of oil and gas which means handing over billions to other countries.

Wind and solar is the cheapest form of energy. This investment will reduce energy bills. Burning fossil gas is pushing electricity bills up at the moment.

@@Cav-z1y We are of course still in the middle of a major nuclear developments at Hinkley Point and Sizewell. However, solar with batteries is the cheapest at 1 penny per kW for the solar and 4p per kW for the battery. The price of batteries has fallen 50% this year and will again by 2026. Until we have nuclear fusion in the 2050s it makes perfect sense to install a tW of renewables, it's such a good insurance against oil and gas price shocks. Energy independence is vital if we are to compete with other nations that are installing faster than we are.
