I sew a lot and teach my friends to sew. For beginners, I would suggest getting one of the $3.99 beginners patterns for a dress or a regular piece of clothing then get some Walmart fabric so you can learn how to read the pattern and get a feel for the process before you start cosplay sewing. Start small so you can go big.

That was informative. I've been sewing for a while now, and I like to see new tips and tricks for making cosplay. On the boot cover note, I just made myself some Supergirl boot covers. I draped the material (a faux suede) over my calf with the base shoe on and pinned it to shape. I then stitched it together on my machine, making sure to add a zipper to my design. Not sure how much this will help, but maybe this will get the creative juices flowing for someone out there.

A tip to bypass a -little- practice is to watch more people sew. Find more youtubers who upload mistakes & are really good at letting you into their process.

I remember my friend had a cosplay that was suppose to be wearing a long dress shirt under a long black coat. after the the first day in the heat she ended up wearing a short short sleeve button down and cut off the cuffs on her long sleeve and sewed them to the coat to give the illusion of wearing a long dress shirt. Just sharing an experience not sure if that will help with your project.
